There is a family in town that I would like to help out. They're a very religous family, great people, that have fallen on hard times. The man cooks BBQ on the side of the road and the wife has some sort of home business.

She said she needed a computer to run Quicken, Excel, and to get on the internet with occasionally. When she mentioned the internet, I immediately shyed away from an older Thinkpad thinking that someone who rarely uses the net (and isn't very computer literate) would be better off with a Mac than some old Windows box where the firewall/antivirus wouldn't get updated much.

SOOOOO....

I'm looking for a Mac laptop that will run 10.4, run Excel and Quicken alright. Preferably with a DVD-ROM instead of CD, but doesn't need a CD-RW. Between her money and the cash I'm throwing in I have about $500 to work with (darned me losing my job). I already have the 10.4 discs.

I'd like to be as low as I can from $500, because that has to cover the costs of Office and Quicken. If possible, I'd rather get Office for her than use a free alternative that may be confusing for her. If anyone has a laptop they'd like to sell, or a cheap copy of Office or Quicken, please let me know.

Also, if ya'll can recommend the best Mac laptop for this endevor, and/or know cheap places to get Quicken and Office, please let me know. It is much appreciated.

EDIT: I'd like to get her a computer it decent shape, but::: It must have a working modem, since she'll use a free dial up service for the internet.

Thanks for the info! If it comes down to it I think the G3 snowbooks would work (and this may also be what I'm looking for). I just thought someone on here might have an old one they know longer use that would allow for the difference to be used to buy one of the software titles.

I know I can pull this off on the x86 side, I just thought I'd try with a Mac first.

So, do you need wireless?

I do not NEED it. She does go to a community center she talked about that has wireless, but her main need is for dialup. She had been using the community center's computers previously, but from what I've learned it wasn't working out well and too much to do to try to keep accurate business records.

An airport card would be nice, but at this price def is not expected. I know she needs dialup, and if for some reason she ends up needing wifi I can always sell something to cover the cost of one of those cheap $20-30 dongles down the road.

I used to have a 900Mhz combo and it was a zippy litle machine for its time and probably still hold its own today. I personally wouldn't get anything less than a 800Mhz one with the 32MB Radeon card, everything else has an old Rage chip which will feel sluggish at best.

It looks like from that link they're under the $500 limit. I'd say go for one of those.

Thanks. It looks as if I can get Quicken 2006 and Office vX for $140+ shipping.

ALSO A NOTE: I think Quicken 05 would work as well, if it will save money. If anyone knows where I can beat the prices above please let me know. Thanks.

I've got a copy of quickbooks pro 6 for Mac that you can have for the cost of shipping it.

Also, check out techsoup dot org slash stock. If you can get a 501 c 3 non-profit on board, you can get office for dirt, dirt cheap.

I have a 14" 900Mhz G3 with 640MB RAM, 40GB HD, Combo drive (DVD/CD-RW), and Airport card. Looks like it just came out of the box...still under Applecare too.

I would consider selling it if the price was right....but I might want to hold onto it for a little longer incase rev. B MacBooks come out sooner than I figured....shoot me a PM with what you might be willing to pay for it and I'll think more about it.

Don't think I'll be able to accomplish the 501c3. Just trying to be a good samaritan for a family who deserves the help.

I have just what you need, its a 800mhz iBook G3 with 640mb ram a 30gb and a cd-rom drive. I know you said dvd-rom, but cd is ok I guess. It is in great condition, near perfect and the battery lasts a good 3 hours. Let me know.
