I once saw a screenshot where the person had "XXX's Hard Drive, 10gb Free Space" on the text label.

How do I do that? =)

click on your desktop
go to the View menu
click show view options
click Show item info

Is there a way/hack to show a badge of how much space is left on the icon of the drive?

That would actually be really cool, or a little meter showing how full it is would probably be more appealing. Submit that as a feature request:

In the leaked betas of Longhorn the drives has little meters below them showing the freespace, but in the latest leaked one, 4008 I think, they took them out already.
