Hey guys, I'm going to the Gay Games Opening Ceremonies tomorrow night (July 15th). It's gonna be a blast as I have many friends participating in the games. I have friends on the football, tennis and water polo teams.
Now of course, there will be protesters outside Soldier Field. Usually I'm prone to get quite nasty with them, but I don't want to do that. I could also ignore them, but that's no fun. :)
So any suggestions for something to say to them when they start throwing Bibles at us?

Get some gay porn and hand it out to them. Ask them if they've "heard the good noise". ;)

Be as flamboyant and feminine as possible, while making out with every guy in site (gay or not!).
Or, just wear a shirt that says "Jesus loves me too!" - nothing would make a Bible thumpers blood boil more.

I would be evil and rip up a bible in front of them. But that would be me because i am against religion, not anything to do with them being anti-gay.
T-shirts would be great

Don't have any protest advice but there's a musical called "Group Therapy" you should see. It started off as SF only but they got invited to the Gay Games this year.
Its fabulous and I usually hate musicals, think you'll enjoy it. ;)

Those are AWESOME. I bet I can run down to Gaymart or Beatnix and find some like that.
Thanks vniow, but I'll prbably be going to more of the sporting events to support friends. I don't know how much of the other stuff I can get to due to time. :(

Well whatever you do don't go and punch a protester in the face. A person did that during the gay pride parade here in Calgary and they got arrested and charged obviously.
It ended up making the parade look really bad because
1)There were only 2-3 protesters TOTAL with their "god tells me to hate you" signs.
2)The guy did it in right in front of some news cameras.
But on the plus side there was some nice video of a bigot getting beat up by a guy in a pink shirt :p

It is! That's why I wear the Super Gay Danger Suit when my gay friends come over. Have to clean out the fridge afterwards, too.
Time Out covered the Gay Games fairly well. They pitted Andersonville against Boystown in a battle of which neighborhood is nicer to live in. Andersonville won. I think the Big Gay Rockets of Love had something to do with it.:D

I like the T-shirt idea. A straight guy's perspective here, but I would imagine a slight re-interpretation of the above ~ "God Loves Me Too" ~ makes things nicely generic, is not offensive in any specific way yet gets the message across to your intended audience nice and clear.
Or is it the gay way to be more in your face? :p

Look, there's nothing you can do to calm down wacko protesters. No matter what you do, they'll hate you. These people don't think and don't want to. I'm just trying to have a bit of fun with them without getting myself too worked up.

Why would he want something that's not offensive? I know if I was in Lee's position, I would want something as offensive as possible, considering the crap the protestors say about gay people.
If you feel like getting fined for indecent exposure, you could wipe your ass with pages of the bible....might be worth it :D

Personally I don't stoop to (or below) the level of the people I'm ridiculing. Reacting to someone else's BS in an equally offensive way just indicates you're no better than they are. I think generally speaking with the bible-bashing types it's better to prey on their insecurities in a more sophisticated manner so that you may not get a reaction straight away but it gnaws at their mind.
I can't pretend to understand being gay, I suppose you could call me a right-wing conservative but a pragmatic one. I have gay friends but we don't discuss the personal aspects of gayness - we just get on as friends and I don't feel curious about delving into it further. The stereotype of the 'outre gay' which pops into my mind though would be the sort of confrontational type who would wipe his ass with the pages of the bible to make a point, which may please other 'outre gays' and amuse 'liberals' but be counterproductive as a whole. I think there are better ways of pressing home your point - grace under fire and all that.

The "Who would Jesus do?" idea is too good to pass up. Make a "Who would Jesus Do?"t-shirt with this picture of Vin Diesel below the text:

There'd be nothing they could say against that - Anyone in their right mind would hit that **** :). Or you could just point an upwards arrow to yourself Lee, that would have the same effect ;).

That's cool sesshi, but guess what? I spent my whole life trying to please those people and all it got me was s*** on. Now, while I don't feel the need to wipe my rear with a Bible, it is awfully tempting given the BS we have to take from those people.
That said, I'm sure I will find some way to have a little fun with them. There is NO WAY you can make a point to these people. They don't think in the first place, nor do they ever change their minds. Instead of getting upset, I might as well have a bit of good old-fashioned fun. :)

Well, I normally don't promote my own stuff here (for obvious reasons), but since you asked, and since people brought up Cafepress...I have T-shirts available with the design below.
As far as what specifically to do...if they hurl invectives at you, I've always found it more satisfying to remain calm and do something funny.
So...kind of wiggle your ass and blow them a kiss. :D

Haha, I'd give good money to see Lee do that (not really, I'm a cheap bitch), especially with a cute little innocent face :D.

Damn it. There were hardly any protesters! :) I saw one. I guess the other 11 were taunting the athletes over on their route to the stadium. My friend Mike told me it was pitiful- hardly any at all. And everyone just ignored them or laughed. One of the biggest gay events in the country and that's all the wackos can muster? Pathetic. :) I'll take that as a good sign they're losing their influence. BUT- I have heard they have other tricks up their sleeves for the rest of the week. I'll keep you posted. Don't they have anything better to do? Like take care of the poor?
Oh and by the way- the opening ceremony was amazing! I have pics I'll post as soon as I get them off my friend's camera. It was quite a spectacle. My favorite was a Margaret Cho quote: "The Christians have gone CRAZY. They've gone so crazy that even Satanists are saying 'That's just MEAN'"! :)

I know that feeling. Our Police and Fire Service march in the Pride parades now, and the Mayor always heads the parade itself. It just makes the whole thing feel more like the celebration it should be rather than a protest march.

Ok guys- update. Day two and I was at my friend Mike's tennis competition at Millennium Park. The cheerleading and color guard competitions were going on as well. Not one protester. :)
I did see about three vanloads of them in the morning by my place though as I was waiting for the bus. They were some Baptist church from S. Carolina. "We're here to save you Chicago!" and other such rantings were written on their vans. Weird. So it makes me wonder where they went. The Games are located all over the city.

The van was just a front. Once they got there they put the signs away, whipped off their dowdy clothes to reveal the tye-dye hippies within, and started blasting the Cher and 70's dance mixes so they could have some hot, gay sex. Probably not, but it's fun to think about.

It's not because you're not allowed to have a car, you can't take a test drive.
(I hope it's translated well from Dutch)
Furthermore, I'm not a priest yet, thus I haven't promised anything yet. :)

He loves her
She loves him
Was anyone else humming the song "Love Stinks" in their heads while reading that? :p
And yeah, I thought everyone knew priests could beat people. Nuns can. They can only swear a little bit though. Mostly things like hell and damn. Didn't you know, violence is fine. It's sex that's evil.

Here's my favorite part of the opening ceremony. After all the athletes were on the field, suddenly the lights went out and all the athletes had glow sticks and were arranged to make a giant rainbow flag. This pic doesn't really do it justice, but you get the idea. It was really cool.
