How Big is Israel Compared to California?

My Geography is not that great so can somebody cue me in? Would Israel fit inside California? :confused:

New South Wales = ~809,000 square kilometres (~312,000 square miles)

Yeah, it'll fit quite nicely, a few times actually...

And my state of New South Wales is a little more than double the size of California so Israel will fit in even more down here.

Israel is about as long as the drive from Georgetown, Texas, to San Antonio. The width at the narrowest point, from the west edge of the West Bank to the Mediterranean, is some ten miles--which is why jawboning Israel into giving back what they earned the hard way was as cruel a political joke as has been perpetrated since Peace In Our Time.

Just because they're from one map doesn't mean that their sizes can be compared. A classic example is how the common Mercator projection of the world map makes Greenland look as big as Africa, when in fact it is about 1/10 the size.

Yah were not talking about Mercator maps and how sailors used it for navigation. i went to encarta.com. Im looking at my map on the wall from NASA that is to scale (no way it cant be considering it was mapped by satellites) and the sizes look the same as the ones i posted earlier.

And besides, it doesnt even matter. Israel is a small ass country. The end.

What's particularly funny about this is that Google satellite map of the world generated at least in part from NASA satellite data, happens to use the Mercator projection (or something like it). Thus it cannot be used for size comparisons.

I think Israel would fit inside Los Angeles (metro area), much less California.

Since the Los Angeles metro area officially includes the vast, desolate eastern reaches of San Bernardino and Riverside counties all the way out to the Nevada border, you could fit four Israels in the LA metro area.

Israel is just slightly larger than Los Angeles, Ventura, and Orange counties put together.

This should be pretty accurate, it is taken from google earth and the magnification has not been altered, I just spun the globe around. Israel will tuck nicely into the corner of Nevada.

Using the same technique Greenland appears to be the correct size compared to Africa.

I was wrong about the total length; that's 240 miles. The developed, most populous area is only about 100 miles, from the Lebanese border on down to Hebron.

The widest part, across the northern Negev Desert, is some sixty miles.

San Francisco to LA is 340 miles, if I read my California map's scale correctly.
