i'm planning on getting a laptop for school. my state's tax free weekend ends August 6th, and we all know the keynote is the next day. what should i do? buy on the 6th and if they release a new one take it back? or just pay the taxes?

Let's put it this way, if you paid taxes you'd pay the same amount for the restocking fee most likely, so either way it doesn't really matter.

By the way, go Black ;).

I also would like to learn whether they are going to release a new one. I am planning to buy one these days, too, and the time is limited for me.
However, as i've been reading these days, most of the people think here that there won't be any MacBook updates soon. But, who knows...

By the way I wonder if you live in the same state with this (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=217316) user. :) And of course the same suggestions at that thread may apply to you.

I don't think that they'll be releasing new macbooks on the 7th. The machines are already very much worth what you're paying for them and too close to the specs of a macbook pro in terms of speed. My bet is that they update the Macbook Pro with merom if anything is to be updated. I don't really expect a macbook update till November. That's just me though.

thanks for the replies. i'm still not sure what to do. they easily could have a speed bump for the Macbooks, or maybe even Merom! oh what to do? if i buy it on the 6th, and if i don't open it, i can take it back for a full refund or exchange? also, if i order it on the 6th, will i have to pay tax online?

Just get it, I'm getting mine now, regardless of whether they come out with an update or not. I figure I'll be pretty happy using it.

Get one tax-free, but don't open it. If something new is released, return it (no restocking fee) and upgrade. If something is not released, you just saved a hundred dollars or so in taxes. You're covered either way.

I bet they dont update any of the laptops. I think the entire WWDC will be focused on the Mac Pros.

I think that you are right craigatkinson, although a speed bumped iMac and MacBook Pro could also come out of WWDC. :)

Anythings possible, esecially with Steve Jobs. He's been known to throw people for a loop. But in this case, I think it would be a bad idea to release anything but the Mac Pro at the WWDC this year. All of the other machines have had their day in the sun this year, and if they did anything more with them at this conference it would either take away from the effect that the Mac Pros are going to have, or be overshowed nonetheless by the Mac Pro announcement.

You make a valid point craigatkinson, it is time for the Mac Pro to take the spotlight and be the center of attention. :)

Especially since desktop sales are down 16% while laptops are up 60%. Time to give the desktops a chance!

Also, yay for my advice being good :p

Then you get a price adjustment. I think it's nuts that you have a tax free day. Illinois has nothing like that.

well i still can't decide on what color to get. i can probably afford either one, but if i got the white one that $200 could go to RAM and a hard drive.

here's the thing. i've gotten a black RAZR phone in june, a black 60 GB ipod in june, and i got a black truck in april. i already had a black PSP.

but i have a white 4GB nano, and a white intel iMac. i also have a silver powerbook

so which one would you get if you had these things?

twoodcc
Jul 24, 2006, 07:53 PM
well should i buy the macbook on tax-free day, or what until Merom is in the Macbook? how long do you think i'll have to wait for that? i'm not good at waiting, but i'd like to have merom to keep me happier longer (hope that makes sense)

anyways, if Merom isn't in the macbooks after the keynote, should i just buy the current one or wait? i'm going back to college August 17, but i have a powerbook now (even though i really want the macbook before i go back to school)

Merom probably will not be put into the MacBook line. The MacBook just came out. The MacBook Pro are the ones that are due for an update.

However, if i were in the situation, I would call the store and speak to a manager and see if you bought something on the 6th and wanted to exchange for somethign else on the 7th would you be charged for tax.

some people say merom will be in the macbook, just don't know when. i'm sure all the PC companies will have it in their laptops that compete with the macbook.

basically, what would you do and why?

Just get it now or you'll end up waiting forever for the new model to be released. WWDC is a pro event, so them updating MB is very unlikely. If you need machine now, get it. :)

you're probably right. i have an imac with the same processor in it, and i've been happy with it so far.

and i'll probably get a new computer in another year or 2 anyways (i'm always wheelin' and dealin')

so i still can't decide, white or black?

Even if they do announce new MacBooks at WWDC what's to say that they will ship right away. But this is a pro event so I would think no MacBook.

I went for white because I could save some money to be used for upgrading the RAM to 1GB and Hard Drive to 80GB. Additionally, I thought white would look better than black... so I went for the WhiteBook and not the BlackBook in the end.

And, I took advantage of the iPod Nano promo! YAY!

realy i have a a white one and i'm considering trading it for black. Because that thing scratches if you breath on it. It looks like somebody went ice skating on it. It's driving me insane. The wierd thing is i actually like the white better but with the staining (mine falls within the sn's that are eligible for replacement aka "yours might stain"), and the lid scratches, i think black is the way to go. As far as ipods go though i'm all black, so it will look better with the ipod at least i think.

PS. I wish they had made my life easier and just made a aluminum one. I like that better than black or white.

yeah, i'm thinking that they won't update the Macbook (but theres still a slim chance!)

so i'm thinking i'm gonna get the white one. i've already ordered 2GB of RAM that's on the way. and i'll save about $100 on taxes this coming weekend.

i think that if they are going to update their laptops on Aug 6th, they will probably introduce a new macbook pro as expected, but might offer a new macbook model with a graphics chip for a $100 more or something, there have been a lot of complaints about the lack of a dedicated graphics chip in the macbook.

They won't update it....and if they do you still saved 100 + bucks. Just buy it and don't open it....you can do....

The only thing that I think NEEDS to be updated on the macbook, is for the entry level mb to get a bloody dvd burner, you can get a pc notebook with a dl burner for around 800, what gives.

I seriously doubt that the MBs will be updated on august 7th. There may be a slight speed bump, but nothing more. It's not like if you buy it now that it'll become obsolete in a year. Just buy it! Besides, if anything is going to be updated, it'll most likely happen to the MBPs, iMacs or iMinis.

If your at all concerned about having the latest technology why in the world would you chance buying something on Friday, when Monday there is a slight chance there will be something newer? Even if you bought it today, it probably wouldn't ship out till Monday anyway. I think it would be absolutely retarded to buy anything at this moment.

In the US, some folks have a tax free weekend this weekend. That can save a decent amount of money. The best bet of course, is to buy this weekend if tax free and leave the merchandise sealed so it can be returned without a restock fee if the item you bought gets an upgrade announcement in the next week. If not a tax free weekend, wait.

Other than having bought something and being able to watch the box, I don't really see the advantage here :)
