Ok i just got a macbook, and want to add some RAM but dont want to drop a lot of money. I heard some people use PC2-4200, it seems to be the cheapest.
1st question- Do i NEED to match RAM, not would it work better, but is it OK if i were to buy...lets say a 1gb stick and also have a 256, what would it really do to the computer
2nd- how do I open the macbook
3rd- Would a 512 boost do anything? going from 512 to 1gb?

Thanks for the help,
Luke

0. While there are reports of 4200 RAM working in MacBooks, bumping up to 5300 doesn't cost much more, will run faster, and stands a better chance of playing nicely with your system.

1. Matching RAM is very strongly recommended for the MacBook and other systems that do not have a dedicated graphics card. I don't remember the numbers off the top of my head, but matching the RAM offers significant improvement for these types of machines.

2. See this PDF (http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/MacBook_13inch_Memory_DIY.pdf) for complete instructions on adding RAM to your MacBook.

3. A boost to 1 GB will definitely help and is probably what someone on a budget should shoot for unless you think you're likely to need a full 2 GB at some point.

Replacing the RAM is easy. Just remember to push the new SO-DIMMs in fairly hard. Apart from that, everything WildCowboy said :)
