What do i need to do to use all of my printers capabilities?

I have sucessfully connected to a Lanier LD328c networked multifunction printer/fax/scanner with a generic printer model "hp laserjet 4 series - Gimp-Print v5.0.0 beta 2" but i do not have all the options available. What do i need to do to get all the options?
I have tried to use a modified ppd file from linuxprinting.org but the printer simply stops and returns an error status.
I am running on an intel mac mini w/ os X 10.4.7.
