Everyone has them, even if it's just one. For others there's a whole collection. Songs that whenever you hear you get a bit teary-eyed for a different time in your life, a time that you consider special. Not necessarily home as in the thread title, just songs that bring out the warm and fuzzy memories.

I was wondering (if this hasn't already been done) what songs everyone has at the back of their minds that cause these feelings. For me it's the entire Whiplash album by James, but especially one of the singles off it, Tomorrow. That always gets me thinking of Manchester in an emotional way. Such a great time in my life, the time when everything started coming together.

So how about you guys? What's the track and how does it relate?

U2's Unforgettable Fire reminds me of home home, where I grew up. Even though I only heard it in the 90s when I was a teenager, it reminded me of being a kid in the 80s in the autumn. So it was kind of nostalgic at the time, and now it's double nostalgic if I listen to it now.

In particular, Indian Summer Sky reminds me of walking to my friend's house when I was about 16, and I only had about £2 on me to last me god knows how long, and I used £1.80 to buy me some tobacco, and 20p to phone her to say I was coming over, and I was walking along (it was about a 45 minute walk), and I rolled a fag, and was walking along smoking and listening to Unforgettable Fire, and the sun was setting behind where they knocked this big house down, and everything was just perfect in that way where you're incredibly happy and sad at the same time.

Also, some early Belle and Sebastian EPs remind me really strongly of when I first moved to Edinburgh as in away from home when I was 18, and my flatmate had all this great vinyl, and it was all the whole art school mournful indie scene ;) and it just reminds me of being free, happy and often drunk. :p

As I'm only 20, there have only really been two major chapters in my life: before starting university and after starting university. The last couple of years before I left for uni when I first started going out and having fun were, probably, the best of my life in some ways, or at least the most exciting (uni's been a bit of a disappointment).

Although it's not my favourite song in the world (heard it far too many times), "Mr Brightside" by The Killers always reminds me of being 17 out in Manchester at a club called Fifth Ave where they played it all the time, with a really great group of friends who I had a real good laugh with (and who I still see when I'm back home). Either that or it would "This Charming Man" by The Smiths, for the same reason. Those songs remind me of the time I was at my most care-free, happy, optimistic and confident I've ever been. Although these things always look better looking back than at the time

Dressed up Like Nebraska by Josh Rouse. Although I'm not from Nebraska, it still reminds me of home, Iowa. :D

This Bartok duo (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=5820797&s=143441&i=5820743) (iTMS link)

I can EXACTLY remember playing it, being on stage with my friend during our senior recital.

It takes me to a very good place.

Also, Yesterday by The Beatles gets me all choked up, wanting to go back to Europe...
(It was the last song I heard there.. as performed by viola, bass, and ZITHER! IT WAS AMAZING!)

That's the stupid thing. I moved to Hampshire with my parents and brothers years before that album came out but it being in the charts coincided with my last extended period in Manchester, as I was up there for a few weeks for work. I just remember driving around Stockport in my rented Vauxhall Vectra wishing we'd never moved away. I was in my early 20s, out partying with my cousins and their friends, going to Edgeley Park for Tuesday night games, just generally having a whale of a time.

This was the song I was going to say too! Also, my mom played alot of Queen in the car (8-track), so when I hear that, I get a bit nostalgic.

There are so many songs that remind me of different points in my life (too many to list here and not enough time to think about it properly right now). Incidentally two of the bands already mentioned - James and U2 - are my all-time favourite artists

I was shopping in House of Fraser yesterday afternoon and Vienna by Ultravox came on, which reminded me of my childhood. Such a great song; I went and purchased it from the iTMS (my *first ever* iTMS purchase I might add) when I got home!

History never repeats....

Massively clichéd:
- "Khe Sanh" by Cold Chisel
- "Down Under" by Men at Work
- "Sounds of Then" by Gangajang

Lesser known overseas:
- "Sunsets" by Powderfinger
- "The Wine Song" by The Cat Empire
- "Nosebleed Section" by The Hilltop Hoods
- "Under the Milky Way" by The Church

My friend Suzie used to go out with the keyboard player from James. The first time I went round her flat, I walked into her living room to find the gold disks for Sit Down and the album Gold Mother hanging on the wall. He'd given them to her when they were going out even though they'd since split up.

I don't think she quite gets why I'm so impressed. But for God's sake, she's got the gold disk for SIT DOWN hanging on her wall!! That's just like the best bit of wall furniture ever IMO.

As much as I love James, I would've sold those things so fast they wouldn't even have spent any time on my wall :o .

Actually, I would have kept them until the split and Best Of album as it probably increased in value by then :p

 Wow!

I have both releases of the Gold Mother album on vinyl (well I have virtually everything they've ever done). The original Gold Mother didn't include Sit Down on it. That's such an "anthem" but nowhere near their best work IMO.

That's really funny, because my friend is from a small scottish village where all or most of James lived, and they used to shag all the (older :p) schoolgirls. Her friend went out with one of them (although I forget which one) for ages. I'll find out...:D

For me it is a collection of songs that remind me of road trips that my family took when I was young. Normally the imagery it brings to mind is driving inbetween Baker and Las Vegas at 3:30 am in our old 1985 two tone Ford EconoVan with my dad driving and me at about 6 years old telling him whenever the clock changed. "Hey Dad, Hey Dad...It's 3:29..............Hey Dad, Hey Dad Its 3:30..." I think it drived my Dad nuts.

Here's a sample

Past the Point of Rescue - Hal Ketchum
Spirit - Willie Nelson
W*O*L*D* - Harry Chapin
Moonshadow - Cat Stevens
Turn the Page - Bob Seger
Rocky Mountain High - John Denver

My dad's a big Neil Young fan so I heard his music a lot when I was growing up – in particular the albums After The Goldrush and Harvest. Now that I'm a proper grown up I've got the albums myself on CD, but if I'm thinking of the songs I don't think of them all crisp and digitally remastered – I remember them as they sounded played on my dad's slightly knackered tape player, and it takes me back to when I was a nipper.

*sighs sentimentally* :p

Same here. My Dad was a huge Neil Young/Buffalo Springfield fan too, and now I'm totally obsessed with him. Listening to it usually reminds me of great big long road trips on our way to camping when I was younger, or driving the length of the country to go see a football match.

I can't really think of any Cd that reminds me of home. But I have a few that remind me of other places.

U2's "Zooropa" reminds me of New York
Radiohead's "OK Computer" reminds me of Colorado
and so on...

Country Road - John Denver

I sing my heart out on that one. I just need a chick with me for a duet and things would be complete.

But the song really hits home and stands for everything that I love.

EDIT: Wow just saw the previous posts. I am not alone.

Surprisingly, Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" brings back one memory in particular. Although 16-years-old and into the whole "hip-hop" on the radio thing, a friend and I were driving home and that came on. I just remember looking out of the window and totally enjoying it.. and neither one of us changed it. He passed away last year, and I can play that song now and feel like it was yesterday when we were driving to it together.

"I Miss You, My Hawaii" by Na Leo, "Country Road" by Iz Kamakawiwo'ole, and "My Island Home Maui" by Ekolu are songs by Hawaiian artists that remind me of how bad I want to go back. I will, when the summer passes and airfare prices go down. :p

Led Zeppelin's Gallows Pole - reminds me of my dear Dad, who never EVER got the words right. Along with the soundtrack to West Side Story.
Almost any Irish music, Clancy Bros, Paddy Reilly, Wolftones, too many songs to list - reminds me of my Mother, Sundays and WFMU in NY and family breakfast with dancing.
Sonic Youth, ***** Galore, the Lunachicks, and most important - the Beastie Boys - of my hazy punk rock youth and friends.

Mine have to be...

Bill Withers - Aint no sunshine

Why: It makes me melt. I am a sucker for old time bluesy soulful numbers. Old time romance is not dead.

Also

Boards Of Canada - In the Annexe

Why: Because my boyfriend made a beautiful visual documentary about our home town and used this piece of music in one of his sequences.
It's a fantastic video which is visually stunning, and can be looked at from various point of view....it shows the effect of man on the natural environment and makes you appreciate the smaller things that people pass by. It makes me smile every time. So thats my reasons
