4.4 near Santa Rosa less than ten minutes ago...linky (http://quake.wr.usgs.gov/recenteqs/Quakes/nc40187964.htm).
I'm maybe 50 miles away...light creaking in the house and some rattling of my change container. One of my cats started to slink toward the basement, while the other one barely woke up.
Anybody else feel it?

 I hope everyone's OK out in the bay area.. I know a lot of MRers are out there.
**hugs** to you all. Here's to sudden motion sensor actually working on your laptops. :)

Should be. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richter_Scale
Barring freak accidents or very poorly built buildings, 4.4s are not the end of the world.

Some moderate shaking for about 5-6 secs where I live in SF but that was it.

4.4 is the construction next door.

Are you new to California? 4.4s happen all the time.
I love the USGS site to finally figure out if it really was a shake or just a big truck going by... ;)

Could be some broken dishes, but even then, not that likely.
Hope that's the end of it and there isn't something stronger coming.

Hmm. I didn't feel anything...
Or maybe I didn't notice because of the 4 expresso shots I had in order to stay awake.

So you triggered the quake? ;)

If you like to keep up on these things, try QuakeBar (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/23802).

I practically ran on caffeine today. I can feel it starting to wear off though, and it not going to be pretty.

Not all that often in the Bay Area proper. I've been out here six years and this is probably the third biggest one I've felt after the 5.2 Napa quake in September 2000 and the 4.9 Gilroy quake in May 2002. I've felt maybe a dozen other small ones (wasn't around for the 6.5 San Simeon in December 2003, but I guess that was felt this far up).

It was a nice little jolt, but nothing substantial. I did dive under the table and set my MacBook down a little hard; it's a good thing this thing has the sudden motion sensor.

SF Chronicle article (http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2006/08/02/MNGQQKACR46.DTL) on the quake. Looks like the only casualty at the Safeway on Calistoga Road was a jar of sauerkraut...no word yet on glass jars at other area supermarkets.

Ah!!!! I'm in California and I've never experienced an earthquake before! I was far from the epicenter though. Vacationing in San Diego.

From the Press-Democrat (local paper) (http://www1.pressdemocrat.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060802/NEWS/60802029/1033/NEWS01).
Some wineries and bars lost bottles, but no real damage.

Bottles of exactly what? Damages may be in the tens of dollars, or more!

Don't worry, it's not what you think.
Owners of the Glen Ellen Inn restaurant saw 35 bottles of wine drop to the floor, but padded mats put in place after the last quake prevented any from breaking. They did lose a couple of $50 bottles of truffle oil.
Bottles of soy sauce shattered at the Glen Ellen Village Market and a few customers dropped their groceries and headed for the door, said night manager Osvaldo Arzola.

Earthquakes?
I've never felt one and I never want to feel one. The earth moving while you're not must be rather disorienting-- I'd rather stick with the native tornadoes, nor'easters, floods, and droughts, please.

Oh my goodness, a 4.4? However did you keep from pissing your pants? ;)
Ah well, earthquakes are always good for a little jolt of adrenaline - that part where you wonder if it's gonna get worse.
Although if you know what to look for, you'll know how big it's gonna be and roughly how far away just from feeling the different types of shaking.

Didn't feel anything either :)
I had a couple of good ones in New Zealand: Two between 5.0 and 5.5 at night and one "large one" around 6.1 while at the office.
It was really an interesting experience: All the computers/monitors on the desk did move from one end of the table to the other and while all "earthquake experts" jumped under the desk or into a doorway, I was standing there holding my monitor.

Actually, I'm in the East Bay and this quake was more startling than the run-of-the-mill {{bump}} that we usually feel. It was more like {{bump, bum, bump}}. When I first moved to the Bay Area, I thought these quakes were just my upstairs neighbors dropping something heavy on the floor.

Yeah, this quake was scarier than most. It felt like it was going to intensify.

There was a 7.something in Seattle a few years ago that shook up our house...my mom nearly had a heart attack, I just stood in the doorway. I was born in Alameda, which I guess not only makes me straight outta Compton, but desensatises me to earthyl tremors. I couldn't feel it here in New Jersey (vacation), so it couldn't have been that bad ;) :D

Funny, I'm just the opposite. Large earthquakes are relatively uncommon, and things can be done to mitigate damage.

I slept through this this (http://archives.cnn.com/2002/US/04/20/new.england.tremors/).
Apparently it was strong enough to knock the books off my shelf. :p
