----------------------------------------
In the mid-high end Home PC range. The video, audio, processor, and RAM configurations are good. The hard drive is not particularly fast and should be plenty for most. The software package is not too good: WinXP and Microsoft Works Suite 2001. No easy to use and simple MP3 or Movie programs as standard. The Tower is also ugly but this is personal preference. It has PCI card slots but most of these are used up by added on pieces of kit, such as Ethernet, Modem, Graphics etc. The graphics card is in advance of the iMacs and should be able to beat the graphics card in the iMac. Also, the Dell has no way of writing DVD video and file disks where as the iMac does. To add the DVD-R feature would cost around £500.
Dell Pros: PCI Slots, £200 cheaper that the iMac
Dell Cons: WindowsXP is annoying for some users. No DVD Writing technology, slow CD writer. Ugly Case (Personal Pref), 512mb less of RAM than the iMac. No easy to use MP3 software. No Firewire. 2 USB cards.
Apple's G4 is faring much better against its PC competitors nowadays, especially that it is now available in the iMac. The processor should be plenty for any work, and should work the video card is plenty for high-res gaming. The 800mhz processor clock speed is easily enough to compete with the Intel Pentium 4 1.6ghz in the Dell machine. The hard drive's plenty, even if it is 20GB less than the Dell's. One draw back with the iMac is the lack of PCI slots but normally this is not needed in a home / small office enviroment due to it having most of the technologies (such as Ethernet, Modem, Firewire inbuilt) DVD-R technology inbuilt is a major advantage over the Dell.
iMac Pros: DVD-Writing Technology, iTunes MP3 Software, iMovie & iDVD for creating Movies and writing them to DVD. Mac OS X.1 is a very stable OS. Much easier to use that Windows. 1GB of RAM. 5 USB Ports, Firewire.
iMac Cons: No PCI Slots, £200 more expensive than Dell.
Overall Winner - Apple's G4 iMac
