depends what comp youre using.
My pb works alot better (clearer, doesnt pick up as much background sound) than the ibooks built in mic.
For the ibook, you have to hold the laptop up and talk directly into the mic for it to sound good.
i suggest getting a wireless bluetooth headset, i used mine through skype and it worked really well.

For basic iChat the internal mic should be fine. I even use the one in my iBook for simple live audio recording such as this: Colorado Isle of Mull / St. Andrew Pipes and Drums - Quick March Medley
eMac internal mic is useless. The fan in the computer is clearly audible at all times, and adds annoying noise to all sounds.
I personally think getting a $30 USB headset is a good option. Gives you decent sound. I've used my slightly more expensive one for some Garageband vocals even.

My ibook mic works wonderfully. Crystal clear, and can be heard from across the bedroom perfectly fine. But when talking on skype w/ my friend, her PB mic is somewhere near the fan cuz when it goes on, i can hear the hum and it gets kind of hard to hear her, but from my experience, the ibook mic is the best so far.
