...for now. I agree, it is rather confusing.

That can only mean that they're going to EOL the AirPort Express fairly soon and release a new version, called something else. AirPort Extreme Base Station Mini, maybe? Who knows? But they'll definitely have to rename it.

I expect that this will be an 802.11n product.

NB: I have not read the linked article, Mercury (the Web gateway) is on a go-slow.

This is for the existing product. Earlier, they were relying on the Airport mark they bought out from the Windata bankruptcy.

"Airport Express" (not for wireless) does have a bit of a muddy history (http://www.arbforum.com/domains/decisions/102956.htm), so it may be some simple healthy paranoia at work.

this doesn't surprise me given the screen shots and reports from developers at WWDC that they were picking up a ~5Ghz signal

Not sure how you all feel, but I have an airport express and it works great. It combines a hell of a lot of features.

router
print server
music streaming server
repeater
access point
remote base station

What other manufacter has a single product that does all this? Plus you can use a few on your network and stream music into different rooms from different computers.
