archive function for photos... is that the smallest i can get it?

i used the archive function to zip some photos and film footage i had, but it didn`t really make it any smaller at all. is there a way to make my files smaller or will i just have to live with a big pile of like 20 cds/dvds?
 
Well, jpeg photos are already compressed, some trying to compress them more won't help much. I suspect your movies are also compressed as well. So you're likely stuck with a bunch of CDs, a few DVDs, or an external hard drive for your backups.

If you post what file format your images and movies are in, someone might be able to offer some help on making them smaller.
