no icon's on desktop

i know on windows i can hide my icons on my desktop , like the HDD icon for the OS X, is there a way to hide that and just have the object bar showing at the bottom?

Finder->Preferences->General, you can choose what appears on the desktop there.

Files you actually save to the desktop will still be visible, so don't save files there 😀
