FKeys (http://zarkonnen.damnsw.net/projects/xkeys.html) , a new application I just discovered is a freeware application allowing you to control the Function Keys like in OS 9, but with greater control over the options. After working with this for a couple hours, I've grown to love it.:D

Actually, it looks like the app is "XKeys" -- small but important difference. Personally, I've started using (and really like) YoupiKey. It seems like its really power comes if you're willing to tinker with AppleScripts. And you can assign almost any key combo (for example I've made iTunes scripts for F13, cmd-F13, and cmd-opt-F13). I won't critique XKeys as I haven't used it, but from a read through the online manual, it seems pretty limited. But, it may be quite adequate for some.

Is YoupiKey free? I don't steal software and I don't have the money to pay for all the neat programs out there.

Yeah, Youpi Key is freeware. You can grab it from http://www.VersionTracker.com. Beh, while I'm at it, here's the direct link for the maker's site: http://perso.club-internet.fr/phupe/english/.

As for individual apps conflicting with my function key shortcuts, it hasn't happened yet (who would use F13 anyway?) and I'd prefer to have my useful shortcuts until such time that I have to deal with a problem. <shrug>

Thanks. I'm big on scripting so I'll love to have youpi. (My favorite: selecting playlists in iTunes using speech recognition (for cool factor))
