For the macbook- yes, because there have been so many problems with them.
For the ipods- it depends, i recently asked the same question about applecare for my nano, and someone said that since it uses flash memory, it was very hard to break. For any other ipod (video, shuffle) i would base it on your budget. Its only like $60, so if you can afford it and want some peace of mind for an extra year, then go for it 😎

I always buy them if I plan on keeping my laptop more than one year. All it takes is one repair and the plan pays for itself. Plus it adds resale value to your machine.

I don't think it's worth it for an iPod. It's not "cheap" if you compare it to the price of a new one. In my opinion, I buy an iPod.. if after the year's warranty is up, it breaks, then okay, whatever.. buy a new one.
For a Macbook, however, I absolutely think it's important. Not because "there are so many problems with them" but because in general, laptops are much more expensive to fix if something happens.. and you're generally going to want to keep a laptop working for longer than the year warranty...so it seems common sense to pay an extra $200 or whatever it is for the peace of mind, since there's such a big gap between that and the cost of a new one.

The iPod warranty is $44 with the student discount. I went through about 30 iPods in a year because the HD keeps breaking on me. If you don't have the warranty, they charge you $30 for a replacement iPod (a refurbished one of what you have ), with the warranty you don't have to pay that $30.

what extraextra is referring to is the $30 charge to return an iPod to apple for repair after six months. within the first 6 months it's free, after that, it's $30. Why you got charged it when you say you got a bunch in a year is beyond me, but I think that's what happened. Buying applecare I believe removes this fee.
