What happens if you turn for key to START when it's already running?

Nasty Noise. But it's hard to hear because the engine is running. 🙂
Good old learner days i thought i'd stalled on a roundabout 🙄

It files down the gears of your starter motor. Not something you want to do on purpose. 🙂
 
AFAIK the car reverses the alternator and tries to start the running engine from the battery resulting in two things.
1) A grinding noise that varies in loudness and ferocity based on the model of car.
2) Possible mucking up of the works of your automobile. A few times probably won't hurt much, but I wouldn't make a habit of doing this to a vehicle you are fond of.
 
Don't do it for sure. As a general rule, I would say if it sounds bad, it probably is bad or doing damage in some way. It will grind the starter as has been said.
 
i did it once when i was first getting used to driving. it engages the starter motor and it doesnt sound healthy. and in my book that means never do it again.

I once did that to my friend's TL. I didn't know it was on because the engine was so quiet. Like the others said, a grinding noise. It didn't sound good. 😀 😛
 
I did it once. I thought I had stalled my car so I went to start it up and the sound of 1000 demons erupted from my hood. I let in the clutch and drove off, rather embarrassed.

I did it once and 1000 demons actually errupted from underneath the hood.





I never did it again.
