This might be a dupe. I searched, but didn't feel like poking through twenty pages of results trying to find an original topic. "This is a discussion forum, not a damned wiki."
Anyway: what are your favorite cover songs?
"Cocaine," by John Martyn (traditional).
"Codine Blues," by the Charlatans (Buffy St. Marie).
"The Letter," by Joe Cocker (The Box Tops).
"Hush," by Deep Purple (Joe South).
"Whiskey in the Jar," by Thin Lizzie (traditional).
"Eyesight to the Blind," by the Who (Sonny Boy Williamson II).

There's a thread here (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=176488&highlight=cover+versions) from earlier in the year, and there are a few older ones floating about too.
I'm happy to stick with my picks in that thread...
The Byrds' cover of Bob Dylan's Mr Tambourine Man
Jimi Hendrix's cover of Bob Dylan's All Along The Watchtower
Soft Cell's cover of Gloria Jones' Tainted Love (although I much prefer the original)
The Clash's cover of The Crickets' I Fought The Law
Sid Vicious' cover of Frank Sinatra's My Way
The Jam's cover of The Kinks' David Watts
Plus I heard Elbow do a very good version of Destiny's Child's Independent Women once......and I'll add The Beautiful South's Cover of S Club 7's Don't Stop Moving. :p

They Might Be Giants have recorded a few covers, like "New York City" (originally recorded by Cub), "Caroline, No" (the Beach Boys) and "Yeh Yeh" (Georgie Fame).
Take 6 has recorded a lot of covers. Some of my favorites are "Sing a Song" (by Earth, Wind & Fire), "Biggest Part of Me" (Ambrosia) and "Never Ask Too Much (of Love)" (KRU).

Alien Ant Farms version of Smooth Criminal is far better than Michael Jacksons original. There's much more energy in it.

Far Better? There might be more energy but saying it's far better is ridiculous.

Elbow's cover of Independent Women is delightful, and there is a video of cat's playing it over at rathergood.com...

Favourite cover songs huh?
Well I really quite like Heartbeats by Jose Gonzalez, and consider his cover of that song superior to the original.
I also like Hazy Shade of Winter by the Bangles more than the original.
Alas, I can't think of any others....

Amazing song. I also like the cover better than the Knife version (even like it more than the Rex The Dog Remix of the Knife version).
Thanks for bringing this one up. Great song.

Nickel Creek covering Brittany Spears' Toxic…
Never heard the Nickel Creek version before, but Tristan Prettyman's cover (http://www.imadethisup.com/tristan/mp3/Tristan%20Prettyman%20-%20Toxic%20-%202004-03-23.mp3)(MP3 link) is pretty awesome.
Never mind the first 20 seconds of banter and there are much better recordings on Archive.org ;)

Nickel Creek covering Brittany Spears' Toxic
OMG AMAZING
Great Choice!!
Saw them in concert at the beginning of July and it was an awesome show at Humphrey's in San Diego. They did two covers The Weight by The Band and Toxic by Brittany Spears.
When they did Toxic, Chris Thile was just jumping all around the stage with his mandolin...it was great! :D

I'd have to add Cash's cover of DePeche Mode's "Personal Jesus" as one of the all time best.
"Wild Horses" by the Sundays was a good one.
A few by the Beatles:
"Ain't She Sweet"
"Til There Was You"
"Words Of Love"
63 Eyes
"Powderfinger"
Circle Jerks
"I Wanna Destroy You"
Cowboy Junkies
"Sweet Jane"
Naked Eyes
"Always Something There To Remind Me"
Aretha Franklin

Check out Matt Weddle (of Obadiah Parker)'s acoustic cover of Hey Ya by Outkast (http://youtube.com/watch?v=1ioKEDgnfs8). It is a must see! He actually makes the song sound emotional... definitely makes it his own.
Apart from that, Iron and Wine's cover of the Postal Service's Such Great Heights is amazing as well.

Wonderwall by Ryan Adams
kalisphoenix Alas I haven't been able to get into Simon and Garfunkle. I feel like I'd like em, but I just haven't given them enough time. That having been said, my opinion still stands.
Lets see, there are a ton of covers in the OC (a show I don't watch) so I'm sure some people could think up a few from that.
Regret - The Get Up Kids
Close to Me - The Get Up Kids
On With The Show - The Get Up Kids
Suffragette City - The Get Up Kids
I know that's a lot by one band but I totally dig all of those covers.
