As expected (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2003/03/20030321011420.shtml), Apple has issued a Security Update in your Software Update Control Panel

Security Update 2002-03-24 addresses a Samba vulnerability which could allow unauthorized remote access to the host system. The built-in Windows file sharing is based on the open source technology called Samba and is off by default in Mac OS X.

OpenSSL is also updated to address an issue in which RSA private keys can be compromised when communicating over LANs, Internet2/Abilene, and interprocess communication on local machine.

It is recommended that all users install this Security Update.

b) AHH, it erased all my software!

:D

Anybody know if this samba update fixes problems with SMB shares just disappearing from the desktop when you are looking through the files?

So far, so good.

I never get too excited about security updates. Nothing ever really changes-or at least anything that you can see.

But as long as it doesn't hurt my computer, it's fine with me.

P.S. Don't worry about the other thread Arn, it's quite alright. :)

This update messed up my keyboard layout (or I assume that's what it was). It changed my default dvorak to dvorak - qwerty command. Not much of a problem, just had to unselect and reselect dvorak in system preferences. Still, a little annoying.

I supposedly installed the security update on my 12" PowerBook several times. The Software Update keeps wanting to install the security update despite the previous installations. Can anyone tell me what went wrong?

Sorry, but M$ doesnīt even post security updates as soon as leaks are discovered. There is no comparison to the dreamcatcher-sized holes in Windows. BTW, smb is connected to the windows world, I am not wondering why there are security problems with it.

Mac OS X's security updates are an example of a pre-empitive fix. No one has exploited the vulnerabilities mentioned (unlike Windows), and the patches come BEFORE virii or trojans mass-infect people (unlike Windows).

I would have to say when it comes to the threat of dangerous virii, a pre-emptive fix is definitely the better choice than to let the virii come and then try to remedy the problem. Wouldn't we all agree? :D Sounds exactly like Iraq... (not trying to start an argument, I just liked the wording of Computer_Phreaks post)
