Of course, HP will never have the sheer panache or intense loyalty that Apple has. Try as it might, HP's products come nowhere close to Apple's in terms of style, elegance, or newsworthiness.

Could not agree more. :D :)

HP have got some new adverts in the UK (probably US as well I guess) where they are clearly gunning for Apple. the tagline is something like "the computer is personal again" and they are trying to give their take on the "digital life". But they don't show anything real. And the laptop at the end looks hideous.

We also have these ads in Canada (or is it the USA, since I watch a lot of USA channels), and I'm also wondering about what they're showing in the ads.

Lots of "amazing computing experiences" but no software is shown. Are HP bundling some kind of iLife-like package with their computers?

After all, if you show someone managing photos, using CAD software, composing music, editing books and all these kinds of things, but the computer they sell doesn't have the software to do it, is it false advertising?

Are HP doing the same mistake as everybody else? Do they think Apple is only about the image and the style?

Those HP ads are cool though, but I haven't seen anything new/innovative/cool from HP.

HP makes some pretty nice looking laptops IMO.

I prefer them over all other PC makers.

I thought they were pretty awful. Their transparent attempts to make their brand appear 'cool' and 'youthful' are even more cringeworthy than Apples. At least the Apple ads are kinda funny and have some sort of substance which relates to the actual product (i.e. doesnt get viruses, comes with iLife). HP's ads were just vague and focussed purely on 'image'.

Anyway, I thought HP only made sauces?

HP doesn't have Apple's flash, but they know two things: how to make a printer and how to sell a computer.

I agree. The DV2000 and 6000 are a step in the right direction. They do need some work on the styling of their desktops though.

I have seen those adds. It just shows someone's torso playing with all these "files" with his fingers. It really looks like something Apple will be able to do in the future as far as file management and and manipulation goes. The commercial shows nothing that an HP computer can accomplish.

Now that was a great opinion article. Adequetly cited (albiet a little inbred with the citing) and well laid out, as opposed to the myriad of offal that passes for journalism these days...I may go back to reading Business Week after reading that.

HP has a lot of geek cred at it's core. It got very, very off-track with a certain CEO who need not be mentioned. But I don't really hate HP. I'd like to see them do good things. And inspire people with their dedication to making great technology leap off the page and into life.

But that's a lot about what they could be. I think today Apple does a better job of that, personally. And even IBM/Lenovo has not lost that yet as far as I can tell with the transition in ownership of the fabled Thinkpad line. But HP belongs right there with them and I'd like to see them get back to doing it.

I agree. That's what I was thinking of as I watched that commercial.

I've never been a big fan of there printers, never known why so many people like them. Hate the whole wrap around printer tray from underneath thing, kinda bulky industrial looking. Although their laser printers are solid. For photos its epson for me.

Yep, their laser printers are quite good. I own a LaserJet 2550L (color) and a LaserJet 3015 (B&W fax/copier/printer) and aside from the "no toner left" problem since yesterday, they've given me no trouble so far.

As for "photos", it's cheaper and better to get your "prints" from a specialized place, even Wal-Mart. I don't ever want to have to work with an inkjet again!

"What do you mean, clean the heads? Oh, you mean wasting 5$ of ink, right?"

I rarely print 4x6's unless its a couple for a friend, otherwise I go thru apple or shutterfly. Usually for me its proofing something larger or printing out my wife's headshot and things like that or printing for my portfolio, I have to be able to have immediate control, can't wait 3-5 days to get something that might not be right. I use it just enough that print heads rarely clog. But yah, every now and again I do get on a printing kick and the ink does get sucked out pretty quickly on fully quality.

Me, I've come to despise the top load system used by Epson and Lexmark. I've had three printers with that system and I always got paper jams. I have two HP all in ones and have never had a problem.

Though HP isn't as innovative as Apple or have the features and fans like Apple does, Apple should take notice on how to sell (As someone has said)...

I watched that commercial with Shawn White, and I really questioned if i should just go get an HP...(then I fell out of the daze and realized no no way!)

I'm sorry apple your commercials are funny, i guess, but the only ad you've ever come out that has made me want a computer is the one with the iMac (where the CPU was in the base, and the screen was swivel like; and that black haird guy from the fly, and jurasic park was in).

I am not Carly Fiorina (http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/02/09/scitech/pcanswer/main672809.shtml)'s biggest fan in the world. :(

My HP TC1100 Tablet PC is waaay sexier than any Apple laptop. When I'm doodling at a coffee shop, I constantly get approached by people inquiring about my Tablet...and most of them are Mac users.

While your Tablet PeeCee does look nice, I still prefer to use my sexy MacBook Pro. :p :D :)
