post your predictions of what the apple product line will be in about 6 years or so...
Can you say PPC 990?

Probably one giant app/OS. The computers will probably be far more innovative and better working than PC's if they are still around. (go figure)

iPod, a personal habitat complete with OS XX and optional need senosr that can get you any thing you need when your in your virtual world. It all fits in your pocket. Or iLife becomes some App that can predict your schedule for the next month so you don't have to miss appointments.

And it can make me coffee.

Seriously, though - blazing fast chips (who knows where they will come from) and tight integration with many devices that I never thought should interface with my computer, however I'll wonder how I survived before said integration.

Smaller footprint on my desk.

a mac that the average person can afford to buy. give us something for 500. honestly. when u see the low end mac being 1k, and a nice PC being 500, you gotta know why so many students are using pc's. they simply cant afford the alternative

i really would like some things to be controled by multiple devices. for instance you can change your tv with a remote OR your computer, depending on where you are. introducing a remote that will handle your tv, computer and anything your using your computer to control like the lights. answer the phone with your computer and talk over an intercom or pick up the reciever. maybe even have the ability to choose weither you want to be able to voice activate certain things. like..."answer phone" or "dial number".

we already have those devices. in fact you have two of them; they are called hands  :D

In 6 years computers will all be a lot more expensive. The RIAA/MPAA goons will have succeeded in attaching a fee to every computer, much as they now collect for blank tapes. :-( Besides, labor and shipping costs are going up everywhere. The sub-$1K models will be a fond memory.

Apple will still be around, because its computers will be able to run most of the Linux software that other people will all be running. Windows will still be running on about 20% of the computers in use, mostly older machines.

The machines themselves will have high-resolution flat panel displays. Keyboards and mice will be basically unchanged. Computers will commonly have 4GB of 64-bit memory, 200GB hard drives, and blue-laser DVD-RW drives. Processors will only be in the 3GHz range.

I just wonder why your all wondering what we're going to be using in 6 years....2009, any relevance to this year?

I'll be happy to get a new, faster machine this year - in the future, given the assumption that speed and power will increase, the greatest change will be in software and what it will be able to do with all that power.

laptops will be a small little thing that you can fit easily in your pocket...maybe ipod size, and you can attach a foldable screen to it and foldable touchpad keyboard with trackpad. also the screen will be touch sensitive. the screen and keyboard can fold up to the size of the ipod...making it just a little thicker.

it will have a 5-7 ghz processor...much slower than the desktop ones out at the time. and it will create extremely low heat and be able to last for a full waking day on battery. it will have about 3-4 gigs of memory and some new storage media device that will hold at least 500gigs. it will also have a new type of cd-rom drive...like a minidisc but with new technology so it can hold about 50-100 gigs of data.

Well, it's easy. Look at the Apples that were around in '97. 350 Mhz 604e on 50 Mhz busses with a 4 GB UltraSCSI HD. Now we have Dual 1.42 Ghz on 167 Mhz busses with 120 GB UltraATA HD. That's a 406% increase in (each) processor speed, a 334% increase in bus speed and a 1500% increase in disk space. If that stays the same, we could have Dual 5.7 GHz processors on a 557 Mhz bus (yeah that sucks) and a 720 MB hard drive.

I have to admit, those numbers are very modest for six years.

Ha! :D

Actually, I use mine to cook steak.

Additionally, I predict that the operations of the future Macs to be more distributed on the MoBo, I think we've seen the begining of this in the advent of using Quartz Extreme to delegate GUI functions to the GPU.

Raw clock speed of the microprocessor will be further obliviated as we're beginning to see now.

So...

Multiple core (4-8) Microprocessor 64-bit per
Uber-Powerful 128-bit GPU 256mb
Advanced Power management
Voice I/O coprocessor. (VPU)
A First generation Quantum Coprocessor for renderings (Video, 3D, etc.) perhaps at 20 Qubits. (QPU)
1tb HD's will be average

On a limb here: Built-in UPS for desktops.

One scary note: With Quantum Computing as a component of the system, this may anable the advent of true AI (read: consciousness) sometime soon thereafter - perhaps ocurring at around 300 qubits.

The Powerbook CPU will have just reached the sizzling 1.5 Ghz speed limit while asbestos gloves are standard with each 12" unit, as well as earplugs for the internal fans. Indeed, they will be able to make coffee and cook steak. Just set the coffee pot or frying pan on top of the unit and breakfast or dinner is served. The Air port range wiill have reached a whopping 50 feet. I can't wait!!! Maybe I can pre-order mine now.

iMovie8 finally will render insync audio and iDVD9 will say "Time remaining: about 38 minutes" and still take 4 hours to burn another DVD coaster.

ha.
we will not have inorganic storage mediums as we do now. Instead they will be made of some organic material (maybe a bacteria?) that can grow to fit whatever your storage needs.

In 6 years, Apple will go back to Motorola who will manufacture G6. And due to Motorola's slow development and poor supply, G6 will stay around for another 6 years and will have trouble hitting 1Thz (Terahertz) in processor speed while Intel and AMD duke it out with their 1+Thz Pentium 7 and Super Athlon. Then Apple will go back to IBM who will save them once again with Power9 derived desktop processor.

I guess you must have a death wish coming onto this site with a screen name like that... But who can blame you? heh heh heh

RE: In six years...
1.) APPLE WILL SELL INEXPENSIVE LCDs. We will have carpet-like displays which we need to simply unroll and place on the walls. This will give us a custom display to fit any place... monitors will be user-specific. All you have to do is buy LCD fabric from the local Apple Store (because it will be dirt cheap), go home, roll the fabric onto the wall, take out a pair of scissors and cut it to the size you want. Then have your computer run a pixel count on the roll, and viola! You have your new screen/monitor/HDTV.

After these become hits, Apple will sell paint-like LCD products you simply spray paint to your walls.

2.) OSX WILL BE LAUGHED AT FOR BEING 2D. We will have conquered our fears of 3D and 4D universes. Icons will be 3D and will able to be rotated, scaled up or down in size, changed any which way.

3.) IF APPLE IS SMART, it will have invested more and more of its money into non-computer-related industries which will pay for more than 100% of its operational and manufacturing costs, thus freeing it to start making computers at dirt cheap prices.

4.) APPLE'S OS WILL BE MULTI-LINGUAL. To have an Apple Computer will mean to have a universal translator which allows people to talk/chat with people from all over the world in a hundred languages.

If you're writing a document, you will be able to have the OS translate it into whichever language you want.

People will therefore become either hyper-lazy about learning languages, or extremely interested. This polarization will continue as society divides into polarized groups of technocrats and the sedated masses.

5.) APPLE WILL INCORORATE EDUCATIONAL TOOLS. Apart from languages, Apple Computers will come with their own native software as part of the OS which includes more than what is currently offered by the current Encyclopaedia Britannicas.

People will want to be hyper-informed about what is going on in society and about the history of the world. And they won't want to keep going onto the web to get the core information. So it will all be instantly accessible on their own computers.

6.) APPLE WILL HAVE A.I. ASSISTANTS -- these A.I. will be able to communicate and perform functions with the user while the user is doing different tasks. Sort of like having a number of semi-smart assistants at your fingertips.

And then again, I might just have enough money at that time to finally buy myself a 17" PB... :D

I would have to disagree, from all the rumors it sounds like the "G5" Macs will be PPC 970's and the "G6" will be PPC 980's, but then again I am just taking all the rumors and roadmaps I have heard and trying to put them together.

I think however Motorola will have some future with Apple when it comes to laptops, consumer machines, and future portable devices. I just don't see Moto having much to do with the Power and xServe lines in the future.

6 years from now, we will have computers of completly awsome speeds. 3D displays for the masses. the finder will have every app preloaded into it for speed. iPods will have resached a super-palm status with color screens and another game besides breakout.
there will also be death to wndows, and world peace due to the death of winows

anything i said here wa a pure joke today
so
umm

yeah

There will be no need for hard drives. TDR (triple rate ram) at 10 Gig per chip will make them obsolete; hence each computer will have no internal moving parts, and will be tied into a self aware central Apple computer by radio transmission. There will also be no CD or DVD drives. Sony Memory sticks and other cards will see to that. No keyboards either. Just speak into your portable hand held. Naturally dial-up and cable connections will be obsolete. A 17" laptop will be the laughed at, and they will wonder how we ever got along toting one around. LCD's will be unnecessary. Just point the device at a white wall or screen and your information is projected onto it. It will fit in your pocket and everyone will want one. Also it will have a 1.44 MB floppy drive.

I've had the pleasure of being RIGHT ON in my predictions over the year. Heck, I was the one that first speculated on a 1996 Apple market share of 60%, and Newtons in every pocket. So here goes:
1. SCSI returns to the Mac
2. Steve Jobs moves to Vegas and wears Kleenex boxes on his feet
3. The new 999 processors will be imbedded in your cerebral cortex, but the name will infuriate fundamentalist Christians
4. Can you say: "Dvorak keyboards!"?
5. The new Powerbook will be cut from a single crystal of carborundum
6. Hard drives will hold 10 terabytes, be the size of a thimble, and be constantly misplaced.
7. Interactive LCD screens will now display 1.6 trillion colors
8. Les will be wrong again

In six years, Apple will release a superbowl commercial that will reintroduce the original shape of the Macintosh...

Yep. That same ol' rectangular box. But inside it will have so much storage etc, that it will make most people really stand up and take notice.

AND, it will have a 1.44MB floppy drive.

Seriously though, flashing back to the present; at my job they replaced my old Dell 400 Mhz P-II with a 2.5 Ghz DELL desktop. I love Macs just as much as anyone; I have a 17". But with the DELL the Apps seemed to come up with a blink of an eye. No spinning beach balls, no bouncing dock icons. Just "WHOOP-THERE IT IS". I was amazed. I hope we don't have to wait long before Apple gets help from somewhere, anywhere reguarding speed and effeciency and I don't mean 6 years from now.:(

Why not Apple in 5 years? Or even 10 years? But 6 years? I don't get it. It doesn't sound very intuitive to choose 6 as a number. Is this due to PC influence? I dunno. Strange. :D

i'm sure its just a random number, there doesn't have to be logic in everything, the point is it doesn't matter...he had to pick something and maybe 6 was the first number he thought of...does it really matter???

Absolutely its the GUI (or what ever letter you put in frony of UI) that will be the biggest perceived change. Sure there'll be 1Thz processors (LOL), organic memory etc but the UI controlled by iris movement, speech, screen sensors (not touch it gets grubby!).
The poop thread will be grim with the addition of iSmell to Mac OS X (10.9.6.2)

Screens will be huge LCD's custom built to fill a whole wall creating almost holographic feelings a whole wall shows a screensaver of live pics from a beach in Rio or tiny iris projectors linked to iPods as you go about your day.

If your organic memory gets infected with the wrong bacteria (e.g. Windoze PWee) then you lose your life.

There'll still be a war somewhere.......
