Ugh, New Windows OS

UGH, gross, The next Windows OS has leaked out and theres a screenshot of it.
And let me tell you, way to try and be aqua, BUT NOT.
They are trying really hard to keep up with Apple. <in my opinion>

Seems like they're continuing the trend of byting Mac OS's. It looks like the interface is aqua inspired but they didn't quite make it :D
The screenshot seems very messy and unorganized. Maybe thats the main reason of why they're implementing this file-finding thing (read article).

This is VERY old news, screen shots of 'longhorn' have been around for months, even here at MacRumors. :rolleyes: There's even a leaked alpha build around, I installed it on a spare laptop at work...and let me tell u..it was *****! Much worse than XP, that bar on the right that is supposed to have the clock and slideshows etc is a joke!

Of course I realise this, I'm just saying that currently it is the biggest pile of poo I have ever seen, and XP is far better. The bar thing on the right is a real waste of time, and a resource hog...but you can turn it off :)

I had installed Winsucks XP beta just after I had installed OS X (Public beta, or 10.0.. can't remember), and the first thing I thought was how similar they look.... after that I heard the name "Luna"..... Then I even noticed same login pics.... Then I turned off the PC.

I don't understand how you three (as well as a few others in this thread alone) can express such negative comments about the only Longhorn screenshot within the link. The photo is too small to pick out detail, AND the photo has a poor resolution, period.

Until I see a much more detailed photo of Longhorn (even if it's 1MB I would rather give an opinion of the Longhorn interface through that over some <100KB crap photo) I don't feel any biased opinion of the interface is justified.

Of course, if these are the only types of photos Microsoft send out, I won't have to worry about expensive dial-up bills. :)

Don't take it too seriously.
To be honest, I only looked at the pic for about 3 seconds, and decided that it looked alot like the current XP-GUI (Luna).
I use it sometimes (as little as possible) and it's so ugly, that I change the appearance back to "Wincrap Classic". That I do mean.
Besides, it's fun having a go at M$ at every opportunity! :)

It is Luna. That's the problem. Microsoft wants to maintain it's branding and won't take many risks with the UI.

I don't think it's that ugly, the screenshot is cluttered. It is very functional but it's not Aqua.

Microsoft is saying that the UI has change dramatically and has not been implemented yet. I kind of doubt it. GDI+ has been around since Windows 2k and the entire UI can be hardware accelerated. Microsoft does not want to drastically change the UI, and that's boring.

You know what is so funny...

People on here are always complaining about the GUI speed of OSX, go and read their comments about how dissapointed PC users are at the GUI speed of XP on 2.2 Ghz processors. Sounds like it lags bad according to many users. The Longhorn is suppose to be more bloated so I suppose you will need at least a 2.5Ghz P4 to even run it.

I don't know however the only PC's I use are old Pentium Pro 200's with Windows 98 in my classroom and let me tell you, they make my iMac DV feel like a racehorse running OSX!

i have a 1.4ghz Athlon XP 1600 running XP Pro and the OS flies - when i'm only using 1 app! It can't cope with is running illustrator, photoshop, dreaweaver, outlook, winamp simultaneously (even with 784MBs RAM).

My G3 800 iBook runs OS X well, not perfectly, but well. BUT it can cope with multitasking heavy apps. These Dell pc's vs G4 tests are pretty inaccurate i guess as they don't count for multitasking.

go to cnet.com search for any windows thing and click on it. you should see somewhere on the page user comments. windows is usually in the 50/50 range and mac products are usually in the 80/20 range.

I'm mainly a pc user im sorry to say. And i think I speak for most pc users when i say I hate microsoft, and longhorn looks totally gay. But its kinda hard to turn a cold shoulder to microsoft when 99% of the world uses windows. It sucks, but thats the way it is. Oh, well.

the sidebar contraption looks interesting; somewhat like konfabulator without the style (but hey, it's also $25 cheaper). i like the idea of having it integrated into the system, but there seems to be enough spyware/pop-up-ware in the xp toolbar to make me think that the same will happen to this (why would i want to clean up unused desktop icons if there are no icons on the desktop?). apple should have longhorn's new filesystem beaten long before it even reaches shelves. i don't know why anyone even mentions the gui, it's always been and will always be awful, no competition there. the magical picture/music viewing shots look nice, but aren't impressive when you realize that the mac os has had metadata since day 1 and that in the finder's column view, we can do the same thing with less clutter. i can understand why someone who had not tried a mac and did not know that this type of functionality is about 3 years old would be impressed.

anyway... i had heard a while ago that with the introduction of blackcomb, windows would no longer run old preXP software. has this been changed, or will ms drop the bomb on all those who have not yet upgraded to xp next year? i know that there is still a large user group that will not move up to xp (not for lack of quark or protools, but for the sake of system integrity and security - if you can call 2000 secure).

Not to get picky or anything but the actual % of windows hardware in the world is something like %78. Macs have an extablished base of something like %15 and the remaining percentage is made up of servers, unix, linux, etc. The current sales figures have windows machines on a sales basis of like %90 of the market with apple around %3-4 and the remaining made up of other operating systems.

A pile of crap of any size is still a pile of crap. I refuse to move to heXPee on my windows box. I have win2k pro installed, which handles every task I toss at it, and doesn't have the nasty bubblegum that heXPee does. Also, heXPee removed functions/features that are/were standard issue in 2k.

Anyone else here how recently, a major flaw was found in winNT that had never been fixed?? Go figure. M$ isn't going to fix it either, they are leaving it there. So anyone still runnin winNT needs to be aware of it. I got the news from TechTV (their web site is www.techtv.com). It was on one of last week's the screen savers shows, so you should be able to search for it, if you care.

During last night's show, they even mentioned stuff about OS X. If you watch the show at all, you can [easily] recognize an iBook behind one of the hosts, actually on his right hand side from his perspective. The second host was even using it last night... which is good. Anytime a techie show actually uses Apple hardware is a good thing, at least in my opinion. I've seen more then a few pieces of Apple hardware on the show, and they even had an interview with a basketball player that has a PowerMac at home, takes his TiBook and iPod with him on the road. Of course, they had to explain (with a scrolling caption) what TiBook meant to the moronic windows masses... heh

Honestly, one thing I like about Apple products is that not everybody uses them. I don't want to be like 95% of the population -- where's the individuality in that? Maybe it appeals to some kind of elitist personality trait we have. PC's are fine computers, they work well and they're fast, but they have no style and are poorly designed. And everyone is so obsessed with how much cheaper they are. Who cares! Some of us can afford more expensive computers and I'm just glad we have a choice.

In reality, it's a shame that there are realy only a couple (okay three including Linux) of choices of hardware and software platforms, thanks to Microsoft's crushing competitiveness.

As long as Apple makes enough money to continue making great products I'm happy to be in the minority, or niche market. Microsoft can make a decent OS, but it will never look quite as nice as OSX or be as much fun to use day in day out. They might someday, but not with this Longhorn thing.

while it no doubt will look rather cheesy, if they can pull off the file system talked about in the article, I think that could be pretty cool. Simplified searches and the ability to filter windows sounds pretty cool to me. Its easy to dismiss everything MS does, but fact is that apple still needs to compete with them. Apple does a good job most of the time, usually exceeding them, but apple should be (and I'm sure they are) taking note of what MS has planned to see what they can do that will be better.

i was worried about that new filesystem until i heard that apple hired the guy who built the BFS (i.e. fast, journaling, fast, unlimitied metadata, fast, and fast). for all i know, apple may very well integrate a full sql server in 10.3 and hook it's functionalities into the FS, but considering the power of the BFS and the fact that the wonderful windows sql implementation was the cause for that nasty worm that crashed bank of america's entire system superbowl weekend, i think we're still safe.

Microsoft is doing itself no favors by changing the GUI. Here is a little math for you. I currently service around 120 M$ computers. Of those computers I have 5 . . . count them . . . 5 XP machines. And the only reason I have that many is because it is getting hard to find windows 2000 on the cheap machines....

People hate having M$ changing the GUI. These are PC people. They fear change.

Here is a break down of my OS's

XP = 5
2000 = 80
NT = 15
Me = 5
98 = 15

I don't push my clients anywhere, and they like windows 2000. (Keep in mind this is in business environments.)

Here are my Macs

10 = OS9
5 = OSX

The 10 are all at one company. I am hoping to switch them to X this year....

I don't really see the similarity to Aqua (as in MS made changes to XP specifically to make it look more like Aqua). It looks like an evolution of XP with more eye candy to give the user a visual clue as to what they can do with the files in the current folder. There has been an effort underway at MS over the last few years to migrate to a "task-based" GUI that hasn't made it's way into Windows yet. These little windows with "contacts", "pictures & video", etc. are one of the first steps in that direction.

The filesystem would be a huge change for Windows. There have been abortive attempts to introduce this type of FS all the way back to the development of Win2k. It will be similar to the BeOS where the FS is essentially a database. It appears that the new FS won't make it into the first release but will be released later.

I know Apple hired one of the guys that was responsible for the BeOS filesystem, but I don't know if Apple will replace the existing FS with a DB-based FS anytime soon. I don't think it's a priority for Apple (or I don't think it should be a priority) because (IMHO) they need to catch up on hardware power first. I would divert every OS developer to getting OS X working on the 64-bit 970 and optimized for that architecture.
