I am looking at refurbished macs, and I am wondering, how do powermacs in the 450-867 range handle OS X? anyone know?

well this doesn't answer your question as asked, but here goes. I run an iMac 400MHz G3, admittedly soon to be replaced but it's running 10.2 with no problems at all. It's not the snappiest experience in the world but it's not that slow, either. OS X is just reponsive, it's great.

I would look at higher-end, simply because older processors don't cut it anymore-- try to shoot for the 867 over the 450. it'll run X pretty nicely...

hmmm.. 350 MHz G3 iMac runs OSX so crappy I am thinking about switching to OS 9 until I get faster machine. It is very sluggish, Finder browsing, scrolling is slow etc.. And when you play iTunes it crawls down entire system.
Yeah I tried 500 MHz iMac.. its same thing didn't notice much difference.
I recommend you get minimum 733 MHz.

would a dual 867 powermac be faster than a 1ghz powermac?

I saw a refurb. dual 867 online, with 10.2.4 installed, for 1499, the same price as a new 1 ghz imac.

OS X Power

I am running OS X on my G4 400Mhz Sawtooth (AGP) with a Radeon Mac Edition (32MB DDR). It has 768MB of RAM, and an 80GB HD.

It runs perfect. Fast. I play every game with just about no problem. I get about 80FPS in Quake, I play WC III alot too.

well i dont have the money for any mac right now but i am just sorta testing the waters 😀

if you don't have the moeny you may want to wait. There could be a g4 sell off if apple debuts the ppc970 this summer 🙂. If places are stocking dual 867 and ghz machines. the 970 may be reason enough to upgrade.

A dual 867 would be faster than a single 1 ghz in most situations that involve doing more than 2 or 3 things at once.

single procs in that range are fast (100-133MHz bus) but not snappy.it takes a DP machine to really be snappy, whether that is a OEM DP or an aftermarket DP.

I have a PowerBOOK 550, and it runs Jaguar no problem at all. I'm not sure if you're just looking for a PowerMac, but I thought I'd put my 2cents in.
