what are the good (downloaded for free) software programms to have on my new imac?

No doubt.
Do a forum search. There are tons of theses threads already.
You might also try this website.
Just make sure whatever you download is UB. Or it will run really slow or not at all on your iMac. 🙂
 
If it's your first Mac... don't download any.

Just get used to your new Mac... get adjusted... then as you find a need not being filled or something you think there has to be a better way then search/post.
 
thanks guys. really appreciate your advices. I just got the new 24" iMac and definitely need to use it for a purpose. Is it too much for a Mac newbie?

Okay, I'll third Adium, especially if you're not going to be doing any video chatting and you enjoy customizing your chat program. I'd also recommend Fugu for GUI based SSH/SFTP stuff, and SubEthaEdit for text editing. Really though, the www.opensourcemac.org website has done a good job picking most of the open source apps that you may find useful.
