Don't try to beat the system. If you're not eligible for the discount, you shouldn't get to use it.

They could purchase it for you, but then everything will be in their name for warranty claims, etc. I suppose that they could then 'sell' it to you and transfer the warranty...

It ultimately comes down to your conscience, I guess.

I don't think we can discuss these kind of things on the forums

trying to beat the system is not good for the valid students & faculty members if Apple ever was to discontinue it's discounts for education purposes because of fraudulant persons cheating the system ;)

Besides the obvious? Become a student or faculty member. No.

IIRC EDU purchased computers are not supposed to be sold for 12 mo after purchase so don't think about transferring it to your name after s/o else bought it.

a better/legal way would be to get a refurb iMac (new iMacs not available as refurbs just yet).

or, if its a stock machine, go to amazon.com and between rebates + no tax its about the same as the edu discount.

Well, here's how I figure it. Students are allowed to buy one discounted system per year, and they are allowed to sell it if they want. A student could buy it for you, and then sell it to you, and there really wouldn't be anything explicitly against the rules going on... is it a bit shady? Ya, but the reason Apple limits EDU purchases to one per year is so that someone couldn't just keep buying and reselling the computers at a profit, so in a way they've made it OK to do this, but just once a year...

The student would be giving up their once a year purchase as a favor/gift to you.

Probably better, actually... I think the Amazon rebate is $150, the EDU price is $100 off, plus you have to pay tax.

I prefer to buy from Apple direct though, even tif I can get a better deal elsewhere - I don't trust other places with such large purchases, especially Amazon.
