LOL... yah i had a book a long time ago when OSX just came out & there was something about getting rid of the arrow... but i've since trashed the book & don't remember how to do it

It would probably be in one of those Secrets of OSX books, but why do you want to do this? It would be confusing, and dangerous, to not know whether you're trashing an alias or the actual application.

Here's the way I would do it, using CandyBar to replace the icons. Just create a blank icon, or something with only a few pixels and is completely transparent. Then, use Candybar to change the alias icon for the system. Should work fine.
I'm sure there's a way to do it via a Mitthrawnuruodo-type administrator-level trick to change the finder and trashcan icons as well, but Candybar makes it easy.
Edit: or just do it the way iMeowbot suggests :)

sheesh, do you really need to use the Terminal?
can't you just change the icon the way you change any icon in OS X?
with a get info>copy paste ??
