Firewire 800 help mbp

Hi have a 15" Macbook pro and i was wondering if you guys can help me, i need 4-pin fire wire connector for my digital camera and i was wondering, if i by a firewire 400 to this firewire 800 cable, will there be a drastic speed drop or will i get fire wire 800 speeds? or is there a card i can by for the expresscard slot that has 4pin firewire 800?

The limitation here is the transfer speed from the camera. I would use a standard FW400 4-pin/6-pin connector and save the FW800 port for connecting to an external HD.

"Allows you to connect a FW800 device to a legacy FW400 4 pin port, but transfer speed clocks down to FW400 speeds."

So just stick with the FW400 4-to-6 pin cable ...

...ehm... a 15" MacBook Pro does not have FW800... the 17" does and the 15" PowerBook does as well.. but the 15" MacBook Pro does not have FW800, only FW400...

the camera has a FW400 port or FW800 port?
if it has FW400 port, then you can leave FW800 out of the equation, because mbp 15 does not have FW800
if the camera has FW800, then get a FW800-400 cable, and the speed will be 400

ok the camera has IEEE 1394 OUTPUT. My macbook pro only has firewire 400. im looking for the best and fastest way to connect the two.

Ahh, I see the problem here. IEEE1394 = Firewire. You just got tripped up by the naming conventions. The best and fastest (and only) way to connect these is the way I mentioned in post#2.

IEEE 1394 has two forms, 400 and 800, which one is it (well, i'd assume 400, i haven't seen camera with 800...) connect them, directly.

IEEE 1394 = FireWire = iLink

4-pin = 400 Mbps
6-pin = 400 Mbps
9-pin = 800 Mbps
