AVI issue

my friend gave me an avi of his home movie, and while it owrked great on VLC, it did not open in Quicktime or MPEG streamclip, so that makes it impossible for me to convert it to iPod. What can i do to get a QT or MPEGstreamclip readable file?
BTW it apperently works fine on windows media, and the extension is of course .avi
 
iSquint is so buggy and it can be incredibly slow. All my avis have played fine in QTPro.
