View Full Version : Do You Own An External Hard Drive?

I own an ACOM DATA external 120GB USB 2.0/Firewire hard drive. It has been extremely durable -- my biggest complaint is kernel panics, they happen about once every month or 2 when plugging in/unplugging the hard drive.

I back up about once every 2 to 3 days on average and use the SuperDuper! (http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html) shareware application. It is hard to believe that SuperDuper! lets you do what you can do for free and unlimitedly.

I do a backup at least once a month, or before a major set of updates. I have a registered copy with superduper so i simply use smart update to mimic my powerbooks 60GB hard-drive. This is mimicked onto a partition on the Lacie D2, which leaves me with a 100GB partition to supplement. Of course, stuff on that partition doesn't get backed up...relentless. :(

Of course, stuff on that partition doesn't get backed up...relentless. :(I'm in the same boat. :( I have three patricians and alternate back and forth between two of them for every other back up. The third one has a professional music video iMovie file on it that I made which is about 30GB. I don't want to lose it but I can't store it on my always overfilling 40GB iBook hard drive.

Lacie Triple Interface 250GB. I backup using the .mac service, will likely also look into Superduper to make a clone of the entire drive. I've heard of people having difficulties retrieving data from the Backup3 program. It's also the main repository of my digital photos and music, since my PB drive is getting full. It works great with iMovie as well.

3 external firewire HDs > 1 of them (120GB) used to back-up project/picture files.
1 internal SATA HD (80GB) used to back-up my music library.

I have a 250GB Lacie external HD, and I don't use it for backing up yet. I just use it for my iTunes folder, and movies etc:)

I went the cheap route and bought an enclosure for an old 40g HD from my deceased Compaq desktop. It serves its purpose.

I have a couple of external drives.

The one I use for backup is a 200 GB LaCie Porsche drive I got very cheap.

I voted that I take weekly backups, but I backup at very irregular intervals, depending on what I do, so I just guesstimated this to average out to about once a week... ;)

Are we going to get lots of these polls today...?

Yes, a 1TB Lacie for images and a OWC for daily backups - I have to back up every day, have it set to run at midnight and then sleep.

Yep, I have several between home and work.

Lacie 200GB Porsche HDD at home, with which I have had problems with the power cable.
Old WD 400GB USB HDD - used as a go between for work and home. Travelled many, many miles, and never let me down.
WD Mybook 250GB HDD at work, which is only a week old - so far so good.
A 300GB SATA HD at work which I placed in an external enclosure with a Firewire connection. Works pretty well so far, although the enclosure wasn't the best made thing in the world.
2 x 1TB MEDEA SCSI drives at work - for backing up loads of video footage. 1 is very stable, the other less so, and seems like its on its way to that big Hard Drive Heaven in the sky.

Had a 200GB I backed my music up to as well as my files, but now I'm setting up a Powermac G4 (if I ever get my PSU RMA'd) with a RAID 5 array to store all that information and protect it simultaneously.

250MB lacie + super duper!

i back up before every software update and whenever i have important data or new pictures. so it averages about every week. in addition i burn my picture- and itunes libraries once in a while onto DVDs.

i don't get it that people still don't back up at all. external HD's are not that expensive anymore.

1. 300gb for Media (Movies and TV shows)

I don't own a dedicated external hard drive, but my superseded 2G 20GB firewire iPod has been redeployed as a backup device. All important stuff gets transferred on to this at regulard intervals.

I pointed this thread out to my friend Jimmy (user SuperComp here on the forums - we're sitting here in English class....), and he goes "I bet iGary backs up daily." Low and behold... Just thought it was kind funny. :D

I own a 250GB MyBook FW drive. I usually back up every week or so. Or whenever I feel I need something saved.

I have a 160GB mirrored external drive from OTC that gets all of the important files that I have (pictures & music).

Everything on my main drive doesn't matter if its toast.

I have this whopping great white thing called an 'iMac' for my backups. I just connect my iBook from work over the Internet to the iMac at home, open two Finder windows and drag 'n' drop as I do stuff. Since I take the iBook home every night I think - touch wood (so to speak) - I have my bases covered. Unless someone breaks into my very secure flat and steals both, but that's always a risk unless you have off-site backup. (Talking of which, I wonder when .Mac will reach double-digit Gigs..?) Music, movies and pics go onto DVD as and when.

Having just had my Powerbook G4 logic board go "poof!" on me, I've suddenly converted to the attraction of having external storage (yes, the HDD was fine, getting to the info on the HDD was a little harder). I used to sporadically back up to DVDs, but that was such a time consuming pain in the ass I kind of wrote off the whole idea of backing up generally. I'm amazed at how easy it is with an external firewire drive. What is it, ten minutes to transfer 15 GB on firewire 400? Or I am overestimating? Whatever it is, it's damn convenient. Plug in, set it to go, and then forget about it. No discs to constantly keep loading, that's the biggest plus. And only one very unloseable hard drive to keep track of, which is much more durable than DVDs to boot.

I'm using Backup at the moment, but since paying $139 (CDN) for .mac is no longer worth it to me, I'll be switching to superduper. The external drive is a WD Mybook 250. I'm amazed at how cheap these things are nowadays, which also points out how stingy Apple has been with their base hard drive options, at least until the new iMacs and Mac Pros came out.

at the moment i backup (3 or 4 times a week) to a Lacie 120GB d2 drive using FW400 and SuperDuper!; i also have another Lacie Porsche design (but i prefer the d2 better) 160GB drive daisy-chained that i use primarily as a scratch disk and for rendering (and to bring client files with me from time to time on site.)

actually i am considering getting rid of both of these and getting 2 or 3 of the OWC FW800/FW400/USB2 enclosures and getting 2 or 3 250GB drives so everything is consistent and stackable on my desk - all these little cables running around are driving me nuts; plus i want to use the speed of FW800 when i get my new Lapzilla.

still not clear on the whole eSATA thing; i guess to do that when the new machine comes i would need to get an expresscard/34 eSATA card and enclosures that support it. my understanding is that its faster and i can still chain 3 drives together. my biggest concern is that i would be pulling the expresscard in and out of my machine all the time, and i am not sure that is how it is intended to be used ( i previously had PCMCIA problems from pulling the card in and out a lot.) Of course if the new lapzilla has an eSATA port right on it that alleviates some concern.

Hmm when my Macbook arrives I might try that... I haven't thought about Backup yet...

I'd say possibly around when Windows Vista 2.0 is released, and no I'm not talking about Leopard ;).

I've just ordered a 160 GB LaCie Porsche. Are you happy with it?

At the moment I'm using a Maxtor for both external storage and backup, but I wanted a dedicated drive.

I've just ordered a 160 GB LaCie Porsche. Are you happy with it?Cannot complain... and it looks good on top of my LaCie Porsche DVD burner...

But I really wanted a larger Seagate combo (http://www.seagate.com/products/retail/external/usbfirewire), though... but a large discount plus store credit made the LaCie deal unbeatable... ;)

I have a 250GB WD drive in a generic FW400/USB 2.0 case. I hardly back up anything on there, as I don't currently have a permanent computer setup at the apartment yet.

Then again, I don't use my laptop very much anymore (maybe once a week or so), so I don't necessarily need to back up everything very often.. usually I'll just back up my music library.

A Bunch:

- 80GB: I use this one to backup my Laptop
- 320GB: this is where I store media (movies, music, etc) files
- 250GB: Backup of a section of the 320GB (yes, I'm paranoid.. but I already lost a bunch of info when an external HD failed)
- 40GB: This one is a portable (2.5") HD that I take with me on trips

And I also have 1GB, 2GB and 128MB USB keys.
