Can anyone explain to me why I can buy a Dell with a 2GHz Core 2 Duo processor, a 17" Widescreen UXGA Display, 120 GB HD, 8X CD/DVD Burner w/ Double Layer DVD+R write capability, a 256 Nvidia GeForce Go 7900 GS and upgraded speakers for only $1,697?
A MacBook Pro gets its ass kicked by this. Its not nearly as good and is 2,799? WTF APPLE? I really want a 15" MBP, but I can't bring myself to spend that much money on something that doesn't even have the current processors in them. I honestly think I might buy this machine and switch to PC. Sorry Apple...I think its funny how they bragged how much the Mac Pro was compared to a similiary configured Dell. Tell those dicks to look in the notebook department. I'll give this one more week, then dude, I'm getting a Dell. 1 Grand for a slower, less tricked out machine, isn't enough to justify JUST a better operating system and some looks, sorry. At that, can anyone recommend any good recording programs for XP?

Good change they may have a computer with Linux for a real bargain compared to Dell.

If you don't need Mac OS X or enjoy using it, the by all means, get the Dell.
I admit that Apple prices aren't on the low side but they are not a bargain brand.
I think many more would consider a Dell if it had a more pleasing exterior. Right now they just look plain fugly.
If you are sensitive about battery time, I would probably look elsewhere than that Behemoth of a Dell computer.
So, any reason as to why you haven't bought that great, great Dell computer yet?

After using a dell laptop for a year, I know they arent all bad. But I will say that I would rather have a solid & fluid operating system that doesnt eat my system for breakfast. XP may be compatible, but with vista on the rise, new hardware is going to be required just to run an OS as well as XP runs on current hardware. It's no secret that unix (and in effect Macs) have better system performance. I know that a 2ghz system can take you for years if you're operating system is made for it.
If you are going to enjoy your Dell, then, Congratulations! Personally, buying a windows based laptop prior to vista coming out is not the greatest idea if you can hold off. I am getting ready to preview vista, but I still want a mac.

well. sounds to me like another person who won't wait till the new mac book pro's are out.
the real reason why they arent out? apple dumbly decided to stick with imac body style, so they wouldnt put a core 2 extreme chip in there.
so millions of core 2 duo's that could have gone into laptops at apple. well... havent. they have not had enough C2D chips for both lines.
I wish they woudl release the laptop update now!! finally. but... they are making us wait a little longer. my bet is that it happens in oct. people are getting fed up with apple.

people are getting fed up with apple.
Because nothing is ever good enough for some people. I say if you don't like what Apple has for you, don't buy it. No one wants to hear why you aren't happy, or why another company has your interest, or what you think Apple should be doing.
I vote "yes" on creating a Whiner's Forum.

Thank you for at least agreeing with me...I'm sorry I lashed out before, but I'm still a little angry at the fact we still don't have updated MBPs, even if they aren't using C2D, we should definitely get a price drop, I don't think anyone can argue with that. I'm still planning on getting a mac, but I want a portable, the main reasons I'm going to be using it is for school and music recording. I'm now actually thinking about the MacBook and getting a 20" cheap monitor to hook it up to when I'm at home. I would really like to play games on it, and by that I mean good games, like AOE 3, Oblivion, etc...but I think I'd be better off just getting a 360 and being happy with that. I'm also on a budget, I couldn't tell you how much I'd like to spend but the base MBP with an extra 512MB chip would be pushing it. I think I'd be happier with the MBP, but I would be extremely pissed if they decided to upgrade to C2D a week after I buy my computer, and no I'm not interested in paying restocking fees. I don't think I would care as much, because I think the MB is a pretty good value as priced. The total difference between a MBP and MB that I'd want is about $555...is the extra $555 really worth it? I really don't know what to do, I hope Apple upgrades its laptop lines soon, that would make my decision much easier...

Well, as one of the survivors of the Photokina thread, I'll say I'm not 'fed up' with Apple, but I must admit to just a 'leetle' letdown.
However, that experience does make me feel the OP has a point. I wanted to upgrade from my iBook to a MBP, but I don't want to spend that kind of moolah on a 'has been' product. I want the latest and best for that kind of money.
So? I bought a MB instead. It'll cover my needs, and next spring I'll see what's happened in Apple land.
Effect on Apple: I'm still a loyal customer, but I've contributed less to their cash-flow than I might have.
That said, come Thanksgiving, when they come out with the all-new redesigned MBP, I'll go quietly out into the back yard, and hang myself :D

I'm sorry for lashing out right now, but what the **** is wrong with people. How is it that not having an updated MBP is making you angry? You have emotional problems if you let something like this get to you that bad. Apple is going to do what they want, when they want. I'm tired of people whining about not getting the iPod update they want, or Apple sucks because someone else has a machine available for less... with higher specs... who honestly gives a ****. Buy what you want, from who you want, and be happy with it. We don't want to hear these complaints a hundred-thousand times.
Me? I'm happy with my PowerBook G4 and 512MB Shuffle. Play at your own pace, Apple. :)

Purchase decisions are up to the individual.
Price is only one measure/criteria. Other factors are important to different folks.
It looks like the Dell will make you happy. If so, then by all means go for it and be happy.
Exactly. Buy the Dell if it's better for you.
The OS is the backbone of the entire computer, so it's the most important thing for me. The OS shouldn't be in the way of my work. It should be entirely transparent for me while I do my work.
However, if OSX and nicer styling is not worth it for you, then obviously the Dell is the better computer.
And who knows.......MS Vista might not be so bad (it's supposed to be quite good, actually), and so you might have a decent computer in your hands. ;)
Well, as one of the survivors of the Photokina thread, I'll say I'm not 'fed up' with Apple, but I must admit to just a 'leetle' letdown.
I never read the "Photokina thread", but if you honestly thought that computers were going to be introduced at such a large photography event, where new cameras and software are being introduced, then you are sadly mistaken. I'd understand it if people were expecting to see new, upgraded Apple displays, or maybe even a larger display than the 30" be unveiled. I was hoping for a Nikon D50s DSLR camera, but you were waiting for a laptop at a photography event. ;)
Don't be disappointed. Just don't believe rumours so much and listen to the people around here who didn't switch 6 months ago, because I'm not surprised at all. :p
Thank you for at least agreeing with me...I'm sorry I lashed out before, but I'm still a little angry at the fact we still don't have updated MBPs, even if they aren't using C2D, we should definitely get a price drop, I don't think anyone can argue with that. Music recording is an entirely processor intensive task. You may save a few seconds by having a Merom MBP instead of what's in them now, but it's not a massive difference, and a video card isn't going to help with music recording at all.
But yes, you would need a MBP to play the latest games. I'm waiting for a Nintendo Wii, so this has never been an issue for me. ;)

Buy a Dell if you want something that will work for about three hours then break down. Buy a Mac if you want something that will last. Also, when Apple finally decides to go with Core 2 Duo in the MBP's then the price will drop and will be able to compare with Dell again.

I really don't understand it. The performance gain is not that significant, and while everyone is saying they can get a Dell with C2D specs, etc, they have only been shipping for maybe a week or so.
What I'd love to see if Apple was smart -->
release the C2D MBP next week. Watch all the whiners go crazy for it and order what they have been waiting for all since Pre-WWDC. Then end of Oct or early Nov, just after the 14 days for most people, but in time for Thanksgiving, release the all new C2D MBP with redesigned case.
Of course that means there will be even that much more whining that Apple screwed/tricked everyone. And seriously I don't wish that on the waiters, however, I do want them to shut up already. Wait or Buy. Don't Whine.

100% perfectly said. you want quality...buy quality..you want something lesser...buy something lesser
when you get your dell, after some time, you'll be surfing, typing or whatever and no doubt become frustrated...but you won't know exactly why.
then it hits you. you don't have mac os and the ilife apps and the security of not having something non-windows.
i must admit that you mentioned being on a budget. well, is your agony not so much over no new mac laptops or that you can't afford it? just save your money a bit longer...that's all.

i can feed it out as much as i want.......it's getting the APPLE FANBOYS to finally get off of steve jobs and actually realize that apple prices are insane for laptops. I mean come on....same parts....different casing and different os. is that really worth another $1500?? i don't think so. the fanboys are sooo stuck on apple it's ridiculous. i love apple and i pay the premium for the mini and the imac bc they are unique machines that can't be duplicated. but to pay more than double for a laptop with the exact same specs is just flat out ridiculous. This is why apple will never gain much market share.
Do you think basic users want to pay $1100 at minimum for a laptop that have no idea how to use in the first place? No they will go with a $400 dell. Apple will only stick with it's niche market and that's as far as they will get unless they lower prices to compete.
oh and also the whole XP sucks is not an excuse bc obviously fanboys never used XP and that's why they think it's crap. I've been using WINDOWS for over 10 years and NEVER had a virus or slow down on my machine. i like osx bc it looks cooler.....but that's it.

If you want to use the computer for audio processing why not buy a "macbook"?
People keep forgetting that the "Pro" line of apple computers are targeted at those people who buy computers with the aim of making money with them. They look at the total cost (after taxes) of ownership over a three year period.
Now to answer your question, what software? It depends on the OS you install on the Dell. I'd go with Linux on the Dell. The Linux desk top looks and acts a lot like Mac OSX and runs much the same software as the mac.(except iLife) I'd recommend "Audacity" as a starting point most people think of "cinelerra" as a video editor like FCP but it is quite good as multitrack audio mixing. Google both software titles. PM for details

### Personally, I don't blame you...but *I* would get an Alienware...(now owned by Dell I believe). I think you make some valid points...and those who can only respond with "the dell is fugly" shows just how right you are. The Apple is prettier...indeed it is, yet that's the weakest criterion for choosing a computer I can imagine. This website reveals the cult mentality that has grown around Apple computers. Quite silly. Actually, it's sad.
There's absolutely no question, the Dell you described is a much better value than the MBP...even *with* C2D when it comes out in the MBP. An Alienware for $2799 will run circles around the MBP. Alienware has great(!) gpu choices, ability to have RAID HDs, etc, etc. All upgradeable too! Apple has chosen vanity over substance in terms of the laptops...and as a Pro app user (Maya, Shake)..that's a big bummer for me. I had hoped to have a single, mobile(!) solution with OS X. Not going to happen any time soon. *I* think I'm done with Apple laptops for a while. The Mac Pro rocks and is a solid value. Hopefully, some day I'll get to say the same thing about their high end laptops. I strongly dislike Windows...and love OS X..but no, I can't say OS X is worth $1k, that's ridiculous. Good luck...
PS: Apple underclocks the 15" MBP gpu **significantly**. Shameful.

### "Ten minutes"
As someone with a LOT of experience with Alienware and Apple laptops, this post is absurd. Your "ten minutes" comment shows how utterly unconcerned you are with being accurate vs being a fanboy. Price / performance value...the Alienware is WAY beyond the MBPs. I don't think the MBPs are a joke, it's a nice machine...but get real...they are overpriced for the hardware inside them. And if we don't start holding Apple accountable for this disparity...who the F$%k will??!

I am with you. Very tired of the Dell marketing department wasting people's time promoting their product. To those considering switching to a Mac, you really have to focus on NET (or landed) cost. You will find, Dell is not an engineering company like Apple. They are an assembly line. Their 'customer service' (taking liberal use of the term here), ends about the time your credit card transaction is posted. Technical support is fine if:
1) You are multi-lingual
2) You can find things to do as your ear goes numb waiting on the phone
3) You feel confident in removing all memory, expansion cards, etc per the tech's instructions (and they will not send someone to help you if you do not cooperate).
4) You do not mind getting refurbished components, without notification, (so they are able to sell their products cheaper)
5) You do not mind them installing other company's beta software without your knowledge
6) You do not mind repeating steps 2-3 because they installed other company's beta software without your knowledge
7) You just cannot seem to get the same price you got yesterday because they use dynamic pricing
Some people have good experiences with Dell, and Dell's computers are good enough for them. But, I have witnessed a steady decline in all of Dell's business practices and products. If you are a medium-sized business, like I am, you get much greater preferential treatment. That has also gone downhill. Home users can have many problems. If one of our employees has bad problems with Dell tech support on a home computer, I have them bring it in, then I call tech support. This usually get much better results.
Then you have Apple. Not perfect, but neither is Porsche, Mercedes, Bentley, etc. For PC's and Workstations, they are the finest machines made. And when you are awestruck by their engineering and quality, you get the same (or better) feeling driving OSX. If you really want to get the 'feel' about Apple, go to an Apple Store. It will usually be full of people from all age groups and walks of life. They are all seem the share a temporary brotherhood as they marvel at the products, wait patiently in any line that forms, and just generally feel good. I have waited at the genius bar for a half-an-hour and never felt agitated or impatient. I appreciate the personal care that is given and feel waiting for my turn is a small price to pay. Besides, I always seem to have a friendly interesting person to chat "Apple" with.

As i said in another thread,
Dell is the Chevy of laptops and Apple is the Ferrari of laptops. If you cannot afford a Ferrari, quit bargaining in a Ferrari store.
Please switch asap.....And do us a favor by NOT letting us know how it goes! ;)
No. Not Ferrari....DELOREAN!!!!!

I was thinking a lot about this as I was reading this psot. Not ferarri- ferraris are faster than Apples. I think BMW is a more apropos analogy.
RE the Dell... I use Dell servers, and they have been nothing but great- well built, no down time- execllent. But for laptops, I really have had great luck with HP. I do not know if they have C2D, but take a look- great machines. The one I have now is AMD 64 3400. A couple years old, but runs great.
If you do end up going for the MBP, there is a new software update. Makes Safari run much quicker. (But what number will the next update after 10.4.9 be???) :D

A Mac is worth more than the sum of its parts. You receive with a new Mac a better user experience overall, a more stable and secure operating system, a fantastic bundle of software, and an object that many, many people will drool over.
Yes, there may be problems with that Mac, but overall, the vast majority of people will have a great experience.
If you think for a moment that a product is plagued with issues just because of a general concensus on a forum (even one such as this), you should change how you evaluate a potential purchase. I wouldn't take into account people's views on a MBP from MacRumors, for example, because most people are whining about something that either
(a) doesn't matter,
(b) acutally can't be noticed unless you're driving two feet above the road in a dustbin while listening to Linkin Park and staring at your MacBook in the rear passenger side seat of your 92 Lincon, or
(c) affects only 2% of the total sales of that particular Mac. And it just happens that that entire 2% seem to be on MacRumors saying OMFG!!!!!!111!!!! This is the worst Apple product ever!!!!11
If you want to get a Dell because it's cheaper, do it. But don't come running to us when the battery life drops to under 30 min within the first twelve months, the display hinges start to sound like they're going to crack, and the plastic buckles and melts because you left it in the sun.
I'm fine with people going and buying a laptop from Dell or Toshiba or another PC manufacturer. However, I just try and point out my computer history- which has included those very manufacturers - and I've had one problem with a Mac that caused it to be returned. And it was replaced within 48hrs. On the other side of the fence I've had major issues with almost every PC I've ever owned.

Please post pics of you unpacking your new Dell. I'm excited for you.
Did you buy 2 firewall programs, 3 anti-virus programs, and two programs that help find spyware on your new dell or are those things pre-installed already along side of the MSN and AOL 8 gb worth of Dell freebies?

Yes, it seems so. In Spanish they would say "cansón" which is slightly below the bar of "aburrido" and "fastidioso". If you prefer a Dell, then be happy with the Dellards. I really don't see your point in this.

This gave me a good chuckle.
It is surprising how much time the typical PC user spends maintaining their systems.

To the OP: Have fun with your Dell. I'll just sit here on my MacBook and get some work done while you install some antivirus software and play with all of Dell's wonderful software.

Show me a Ferrari that catches fire in operation and I will show you a few Macbook Pros that does.
Stop comparing Apple to luxury brands. Ferraris are hand made! Macs are, erm, Chinese made... same as Dells!
This gave me a good chuckle.

Keep to your delusions people, yeah, that's right
Oh yeah, and who else apart from Apple ships out software updates that can crash your OSX installation without testing?
Don't feed the troll any more than is necessary, please.
Want a Dell, buy a Dell.
Want a Mac, buy a Mac.
Can't we agree on this and move on?
A Dell is a PC, and hey, sorry to say but a Mac is a PC too!

Sure, when your Macbook is not shutting down all the time, not under your control mind you
Stereotypes are so funny. Find me useful apps like eMule, EAC, and Virtualdub on MacOS and perhaps you have half an argument. No, I am not talking about commercial apps, I am talking about free Opensource variants.

For many it is. Sure there are those who know what they are doing. A majority do not and have problems.

That is right, but I don't find it a fair comparison to overgeneralise and make it out like it is as nasty as some users make it out to be.
What's next? I read a few posts on here and go "Macbook Pros and magsafe connectors are fire hazards, Apple never acknowledges problems with their hardware, Applecare takes 1 month to service your computer, all Macbooks exhibit RSS?"
Mind you, while Macs are nice in their own way they are certainly not perfect. And actually in a sense the OP did raise a legitimate point, I don't mind forking out the extra money, but why can't Apple even produce an equivalent product as what Dell is offering for less?
Don't tell me to "go get a Dell", that is not an answer. Before you even suggest that question in retort to such points again, read the question again.
I don't mind forking out the extra money, so pray tell, why is it Apple is offering so much less (nevermind the fact that it costs so much more).

To correct your post, I prefer fast laptops, yes. Does that mean I can't prefer Apple?
Does Apple != Fast?
Tell me please, because that is exactly what you are suggesting.
