iPod Mpeg4 or H.264?

H.264 will be a much better quality encode at the same or smaller size, however the trade off is that it takes longer to encode....

I find H.264 makes the files much smaller (ie an Mpeg4 movie may be 700MB, while a H.264 movie will be ~200MB), but it does take much longer to encode. I find the quality on the iPod isn't any different, but when you make a H.264 movie full screen on a MacBook, it can be hard to tell its not a DVD.

i can tell its not. it looks very good though. i did mention its on a 13" display, not a 4' plasma screen.

Is this normal???? I get about 80 FPS when encoding in Mpeg4 on my 2Ghz MB. Bitrate - 2300, sound bitrate - 320 The most I got on my last rev. 12" iBook was 9-12FPS!!!

I havn't tried H.264 yet. How much slower will it be?

yeah, 80 is pretty normal. i spike up to 95 sometimes.

H.264 would be quite a bit slower, but still faster than real time. i get 30-40fps.

Yeah I've seen nice H.264 files at 200 MB too, they are about 20 minutes long. A 90+ min movie at 200 MB sure would look great...
