Upgrading a B&W400 to G450 vs G3800?

I thinking of purchasing a B&W 400. I'll use this for awhile and then upgrade the processor.

Does anyone know which one: G450 upgrade or G3800 upgrade, would run faster?

I use Photoshop 6, Illustrator 9 and Quark 4, I do use large files. Curious as to which would run faster?

I would think that the G3 800 would be faster in just about everything except maybe AltiVec tasks. I am using an iBook G3 800 right now and it runs really well, but then again it has a 32MB Radeon 7500, which really improves window performance in OS X.

I am running a B&W 400 right now. I have a fast 7200 RPM HD in it and lots of RAM. It runs great. A faster HD and more RAM will make a big difference in it.

I also have a G3 800 iBook with 32mb Radeon video in it. It must be faster but nothing noticably faster about it.

I am not aware of a G3 800 available for the B&W. I am aware of G4 550 cards for it from OWC. Where did you see a G3 800 for it? I am curious.

I've been bouncing around alot trying to find which used computer to buy.

I have an iMac G3 400, but need to upgrade. I'm on a VERY tight budget. Trying to spend @ $600, even if I have upgrade later.

I've looked at B&W G3-400 for $399 then @ $300 to upgrade either to G3 800 or G4 500. (Totaling @ $700)

Also at a G4-450 $599 then @$220 to go to a G4 800. (Totaling @ $750 - This option keeps looking better.)

Hey, thanks for the tip. I didn't know the G3 800 Powerforce was available for the B&W.. that sure is tempting.

If I were you I would go for the G4-450 because it has better video than the B&W so in the long run you would have a better machine. There are a lot of other improvements in the G4 450 over the B&W too.
My vote is for the G4 then upgrade if needed.

I am very happy though with my B&W 400. I design websites on it all day and it works flawlessly and does all I need. The finder is a little slow but in my opinion it is slow on all Mac's.
My Linux box 566 celeron screams in comparison.

I've been trying to figure out what to do with my B&W G3/400 as well.

It's got the Ultra2SCSI drive so it's faster than average with Mac OS X. I've thought about replacing the Rage128 card with a Radeon card. The processor upgrades look good but it's hard to tell what's going to be good.

How much does a G4 really do for you if you're not constantly running something AltiVec-enhanced?

Has anyone here noticed Mac OS X speeding up particularly quickly after upgrading their G3 to a G4?

If there's little enhancement, the extra speed in a G3 would be much better.

I upgraded my pismo to a G4 500 (was G3 500) and noticed a marked improvement in OS X doing anything. the entire OS is altivec enhanced. definitely go for a G4.
