Where's my bandwidth gone!

For some reason my internet connection at home has slowed to a crawl.

Is there anything I can do to check this out?

None of my housemates are using it, I'm not downloading anything, and it's secured so noody else should be using it either.

Any advice guys?

Try restarting the router (if you use one)
We're on a crappy phone line here, so the router needs rebooting most mornings. I find after a reboot, its good as usual!

Is your ISP experiencing any difficulties or performing any upgrades in your neighborhood?

I don't know any off the top of my head, but you could try going to one of those websites which tests your Internet speed and see what that comes back with...

A favorite "urban legend" from our local coffee house and Wi-Fi pit stop: a group of us regulars have noticed reception and signal strength is speedy and abundant, no matter how many of us are laptopping, UNTIL the chaps from the cable company park their truck nearby at a new shopping center. Suddenly, everything crawls -- or outright bails to a flatline -- until they leave after their meal break. 😕
 
Some real thread resurrection here - but this problem persists!

My macbook browses the internet at dial up speed whereas my G4 iMac (right next to it) flies. Both connected wirelessly. I really can't work it out. Any thoughts 😕
 
Are you using some torrent (or other p2p) apps? If so you're ISP might be to blame, many have started to choke torrent users... Try restarting your router/dsl modem and run without the torrent apps (or just restart if you don't use torrent) for a while and see if the problem persists...

No, I'm not torrenting - just doing things like checking email, eBay, MR 🙄, etc
 
Then I would definitively contact the ISP and ask what's going on...

Do they have a web page or something where you can look for downtime, repairs being made and other interruptions...?
 
Where I get confused though is that I can browse on my iMac at full speed and not on my MacBook. My flatmates have no speed issues either (though one of them is always getting kicked off). It's all very bizarre!
 
All wirelessly. I get full speed if I turn off my Airport card and plug in directly though - I've been doing this when I've had to do any downloading!
 
If warm restarting the router doesn't help, try unplugging it. If that doesn't help, find the firmware reset button. In troubleshooting problems like this, I find it's helpful to try bypassing the router by connecting a Mac directly to the modem. This should help you narrow down the source of the problem.
 
Since I downloaded the latest Airport Update I've been having random slow downs on my download speeds on my C2D MB😕 I wonder if others are having problems since the software update.
 
I had that problem! Except my connection would drop on my CD MacBook. I have a mini and it flies (didn't install airport update). I had to reinstall OS X 😡 to get the MacBook back to normal.

I really hope that's not the case! Never reinstalled OS X before so hope I don't have to now 🙁

Sad to say that actually happened. Reinstalling OS X is painless (compared to Windows. Vista's install is finally GUI based a la OS X.)

I knew it was the update and not anything else (router, cable modem etc) is because my mini and my cube are working perfectly via wireless without the update.

Unfortunatly, Apple doesn't have an uninstaller for their software updates.

I've tried unplugging the router several times. I'm loth to reset the firmware as this will mean setting it all up again. Why should it only affect my Mb though and not all the other computers?
