hi, i am looking for a post-it that can stay open on the desktop. id like to keep track of todos and such. is there a software the exists?

The stikies application has been around for years as an application. It came out later under widgets but still cept its base program on the computer.
 
Like ChrisBrightwell said, open Stickies which is in your Applications folder. It's been included with the Mac OS for a long time.
 
as they all said the stickies app. Or if you feel really adventurous open dashboard. Hit the plus sign in the lower left find the stickie widget Drag it onto the window, without letting go of it and wheile you are still holding it. violá. widget on the desktop. (Works for any widget by the way.)

And don't forget right-/control-click on the icon in your dock and select 'Open at Login'. Not that you needed telling that, of course.
