View Full Version : Apple Music Service Commercial?

MacRumors
Apr 12, 2003, 12:14 PM
One reader submits this casting call for an Apple commercial to be shot between April 18-22:

************ has an immediate need for people of all ages (5-105
years old) to come to a non-union commercial casting for Apple Computers
this Sunday, April 13. We are looking for people who are not afraid to
sing their favorite song with lots of energy. No need to be good singers.
No shy people allowed.. If you are selected you will be flown to Los
Angeles to shoot the commercial between April 18-22 (so you must be
available during that time. . . . . .\"

The reader's conclusion was that this would filmed for Apple's rumored Music download service.

doesn't seem like it would be for the music service. why would you have people singing songs without something playing the song for them to sing to? most people sing along with songs, just just acapella(?). therefore i think a iPod commercial is on the surface.

If we assume that the commercial is in fact for the supposed coming music service and we further assume that the commercial is meant to air on or near the launch time of the new service (I confess I have little reason to make the latter assumption) then what can we infer is the time frame for the launch of the new service?

I don't know anything about commercials. How long would it take to cast, film, edit, a commercial?

I guesws I got the impression that the music service was coming Real Soon Now but if they haven't even cast for the ads yet, then maybe it's still quite a way off?

Apple should Hire former Sony/ Columbia Records CEO Tommy Motolla since he is pretty much a Free Agent now , think about it Tommy has over 13yrs in the business as a Proven CEO , let's face it Steve Jobs is a brillant mind but he knows crap about running a record company and that takes a certain kind of person , a cut throat of some sort inorder to prosper in the Shady(not shady as in Eminem) Music Industry , so while Tommy Runs the music division Jobs can keep focus on whats important and that's Apple Computers . Jobs can rest easy knowing that the company is in good hands. Jobs should really make this move trust me as smart as he is, he does not want to deal with the Million and One ********* Artist music Executives All alone. This is Just Food for thought you do this dishes.

Actually, I think this implies that the ads are going to be aired pretty soon. I think that commercials are usually made a very short time before they are sent, because they have to be very up to date and fresh in every way (ie. let's say they shoot a comercial for a new music download service, and wait a month before airing it, and suddenly one of the actors in the film dies or is caught shoplifting or something, then they would'nt want to send it. This is just one example, maybe a stupid one...). Also, a short timeframe between shooting and airing would give those involved little time to spread rumors and such, if there is going to be surprise elements in the ad.
I think a week is not a short estimate. The casting would probably be the most time-consuming element, especially if this is going to be a typical Apple-ad with a no-nonsense, minimal expression; white backgrounds and such.

We should find out so MacRumors can sing in a giant chorus. What a great spot that would be for Apple: a few hundred Mac users doing the chorus line leg kick on a football field and singing some bad '80s pop at the top of our lungs. Ok, maybe it's not such a good idea.

Why the singing? Odd I would think for an iPod/iTunes commercial.

I'm now hopeful for an integrated microphone input for the iPod, though I can imagine that there could also be a consumer level music creation app as well.

If you're interested in auditioning for this commercial, you might try the local model and talent agencies in your area. From my experience, advertising agencies will usually send off these casting calls to all the major model and talent agencies around (even when they're looking for "real" people). (You don't have to be a model of course, I sure as hell am not one)

Here's the legitimate ones in Seattle:

Seattle Models Guild (SMG)
(206) 622-1406
http://www.smgmodels.com/

TCM Agency
(206) 728-4826
http://www.tcmmodels.com/

Heffner Management
(206) 622-2211
http://www.heffnermgmt.com/

...and the Portland area:

Cusick's Talent Agency
(503) 274-4615
http://www.q6talent.com/

Ryan Artists, Inc.
(503) 274-1005
http://www.ryanartists.com/

I haven't had the time to check with any of them yet to see if they've received the casting call, but maybe one of you guys will have some luck.

Hope this helps some of you!

now that i think about it, it is probably an iPod commercial. a music service c ommercial, maybe, but they have to tell the people that do it what it is for (at least they most likely would).
one of us needs to get into the system, and find out what it is for!

boy i love how everyone picks apart rumors right to the bone. Singing could be just singing, ever thought about that, it does not mean there is a built in Mic with voice nav or an internal mic that lets you record your music and edit it on the fly. I realize this is a rumor site, but some of you people need to put down the mouse and go sit outside for a while...

OK guys, I had an actor friend (and Mac enthusiast) call his agent to find out some info on the commercial. Here's what he found out:

1. Casting call will take place in LA.
2. No singing is required, but they may call upon you to sing your favorite song. They want people who like to listen to music.
3. The commercial is for, and I'm quoting what the agent said, "Some sort of internet music service."
4. Supposedly they limited the number of people at the casting call, and the limit has already been reached.

Exactly, some people here are such idiots. Even I am able to sing along with my tunes and be happy while listening to music. Some of these people obviously don't get that they want to show people *ENJOYING* the music they get with this new service and listen to on their Macs and iPods.

I do a little on-camera work and steer a lot of people to casting calls...and all the speculation vis a vis union/non-union, singing, etc. were WAY off from the realities of the biz. {For example, mentioning non-union availability is pretty common...]

Perhaps folks should keep that in mind when they're commenting on rumors from outside their realm of knowledge.

A great, if not technically slanted article on Apple, the iPod, and its' components can be found at the link below. I find interesting a couple of things they mention:

"There's a lot of embedded stuff" inside the design, says Hayes. "It has some fairly complex DSP algorithms to enable the features of the products that Apple may or may not be taking advantage of."

- AAC maybe??

"Managing that activity [among multiple partners] becomes extremely difficult," says Asgekar, as projects become harder to coordinate. "You have to make sure your supplier's development and marketing roadmaps match up with your development and marketing roadmaps."

- 5GB fiasco?

Anyway, here's the link:

I did some research on the iPod many months ago. And the chip inside it is capable of many things not yet used. Such as native AAC and WMA decoding, external devices (I seem to remember thinking you could plug in a firewire CD burner and burn CD's from it) and much much more. The chip inside is way more complex than is really necessary just for playing MP3's.

A day at Apple:
Steve- "How's the new iPod going?"
Generic Worker- "Very well, it's ready for production by next week."
Steve- "Good. Let's have some fun, now. Release a fake casting call for a commercial, 'leak' two blueprints for failed prototypes, and buy another random company."
Generic Worker- "Yes sir!"

Bob Knob,
I think you might be right about this commercial. I just spoke with my actor friend, and he explained that his agent has gotten some more information on the nature of the commercial. The information you provided is correct.

BUT....Apple is also holding a private casting call, and the information I provided coincides with that. So, it sounds like Apple is casting for 2 very different commercials (while maintaining a common theme).

I think it's possible that one commercial is for new iPod's, and the other commercial is for the music service.

I guess we will just have to wait and see.....

Well, if you had been reading earlier, the "developers developers developers developers" post by me was a ballmer mating call, and it took him a while to get here. He was just ruffling his feathers :p

We must keep in mind that Apple is more than a computer company. They do more than just make computers. They make computers easier to use. This is their marketing point. Kinda. Or so I thought...

I'm about to cry, will the models now be compatible with the new service? What should I do? I want it now!

In the your opinion they may look less or more cool, but either way, there's a very good chance the features will be even better than now.

And to be fair, whatever it looks like, it'll be better than anything anyone else can come up with!:D

Another case of Steve delivering what no one expects. This ad IS for the new iPod, but not a music download service. Apple has reached a deal with all the record labels so they can provide/include lyrics with the .mp3 files on your iPod. You connect your iPod to your Mac, and it automatically connects to the internet and downloads all the lyrics to the songs on your iPod. Then, using the miracle of QuickTime's captioning ability, the iPod can display the lyrics along with the song!

That's what this commercial is for, the newest iPod feature, karaoke!! ;)

Here come all the American idol wannabe's! Who knew that all that time spent singing (badly) in my car coulda been earning me money and press?! Sheesh!

Sorta OT,
I think that the best commercial use featuring new music has been Mitsubishi. They find some pretty cool songs...
