I was just needing to clarify this:

Whats the best way to get footage from a commercial DVD into imovie so I can play around with clips. I already have an analogue to digital converter which Ive used but this isnt producing exact quality for obvious reasons, is there a way to simply rip the original DVD files off the dvd and edit it in imovie ?

thanks

Try using Handbrake to rip the DVD to Quicktime, which can then be edited in iMovie.

Mac the Ripper is a great program for ripping DVDs.........um..... so I've heard.
There is a program out there called Drop2DV which I have never used, but they say you can take the Video_TS folder from your ripped DVD, drop it into Drop2DV and it will convert it into DV to edit in iMovie. I haven't tried it yet, but I've heard that works really good.

I said it before and I'll say it again (and again and again and again as I seem to do this a lot!! ;) ) DVDxDV (http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm) is made for this!!!
