Right now I am in the middle of transitioning off of my canon equipment to leica. I had a terrible experience with a nikon n80 about 8 years ago and it soured my experienced. Don't get me wrong they make some good cameras but I will never throw money their way again. I got a canon and was very happy and still am but unfortunately for them I am growing out of them. I recently got a mamiya medium format and fell in love with the glory that is medium format. In doing so I am getting me a leica digital setup to go along with my existing mamiya setup. I love shooting b/w and slides with the medium format.

Very happy with my olympus E-500 with 2 lens kit.
I upgrade one of the lens to a faster one 14-54 f2.8 and added a 35mm for macro.

Olympus.
Had the OM-1, bought it used back in the mid 80s, replaced that with a Centurion APS in the late 90s (excellent camera, totally wrong system). Then I went through a couple of bad cameras until I got a µ digital 600 for Christmas last year.
Now I'm saving up to get me an E-400 (http://www.olympus.co.uk/consumer/dslr_E-400.htm) once they are released. Ok, so technically I have to look at it first, hold it, feel it, you might say, but I want it badly... ;)

I have a serious affinity for the panasonic lumix DMC-TZ1K 5MP. Funcional and pretty nice looking. In my opinion (not even close to professional) optical zoom comes before mega-pixels.

Nikon all the way. They are ****ing amazing cameras.
Yeah, but they've been ridiculously difficult to get stock for, at least in Australia, according to friends of mine who are in something of a position to know. Now that Nikon is opening up a branch in Australia (rather than going through Maxwell Optics), that situation may - should! - change.
My personal belief is that it doesn't matter if you shoot Nikon or Canon - they both have similar capabilities and lens lineups. Drooling after a 5D, though, I must admit (getting some extra money in my pay packet this week, and in two weeks, that should go some way towards glass that I can use on that body. Drool, drool.)

I prefer Nikons, problably almost entirely because the first real camera I used (when I took photography in highschool) was an old Nikormat. It had a built in light meter and it was built like a tank. I proceeded to lose that camera (which was my mother's) so I bought a Nikon N2000 to replace it, which was nice but lacked the gravitas of the Nikormat.
My first camera that was really mine was a fully manual Ricoh, which was great for me although certainly not a great camera. However, I felt like I was missing a few shots because I wasn't quick enough so I bought a point and shoot Pentax and used the Ricoh for black and white.
My first digital camera was an Olympus 2020Z, which I bought because I liked the idea of the big f/1.8 lens. It was a great camera and served me well for over 5 and a half years until I just bought a Canon 400D.
I've really never had a real camera that I thought was less or more than I expected of it. Obviously I haven't been loyal to one company. Nikon to me sounds right. But at the time of purchase, other cameras have usually made more sense for one reason or another. Since I bought the 400D, I expect I'll become a Canon man as I accumulate lenses.

My Grandfather took up photography as a hobby in the early 70s, and decided that Pentax made the best "pro-sumer" (yes, I know the word hadn't been invented yet) camera. He had a MX and a ME Super, along with a good array of glass for both. I just inherited them, so I am a Pentax guy now. (prior to this I was shooting with a Fujifilm S5100/5500) I will probably stick with Pentax, just because that way I can use the glass I have now. And, the new Pentax K10D (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Pentax/pentax_k10d.asp) looks really nice, so maybe I will buy one of those in a year or so.

Can't stand Canons at all, though they do produce fine images and such.
I'm thinking of shooting Leica rangefinders to supplement the Nikons in college, probably an M8.

I currently have an Olympus dSLR and a Canon P&S. Both do what I want them to do just fine. Can't really say which brand I prefer, they're both good for what they're designed to do. However I may go to Canon or Nikon in the future for my next dSLR due to more wide accessory selection of accessories and lenses and build quality. I don't have much experience with Canon and Nikon dSLR's, but I do feel that my Olympus dSLR doesn't feel the most solidly built IMO, but that doesn't mean I don't like it. :)
P.S. Love the option of, "Screw Photography, I draw my images" :p Imagine drawing your pictures of a football game at 5 FPS

Started out with a Minolta XG-1 film, then as I was young, moved to a cheap point-and-shoot Pentax film which got me through senior prom. I finally moved to digital last year when I finally travelled out of state, getting an amazing Panasonic FX-9 which had great battery life, solid build, but so-so pictures inside. I didn't learn and replaced it with a Ricoh R4, which I loved the reach (7x zoom) in a compact body, but it also had a noisy CCD. Finally now, I have a Fuji S6000fd, and I love the performance in high ISO, and the grip of it.
So while I've moved from Minolta to Pentax film to Panasonic to Ricoh digital, finally ending up with Fuji. I really like the superCCD technology, so right now it's my current favorite. In a few years, I'll probably move up to a Nikon or Canon entry dSLR. I feel like I've moved through most of the manufactures, searching for the camera that fits my evolving needs.

I'll put out a few words here:
Usability
Image Feel
Ergonomics
Body feel
Flash system
Frankly I am a polar opposite of cgratti's opinion. Same thing with many of my frends. Everyone that bought/is buying a camera this year in the photo club (i'm president) at school is buying a Nikon because they love the feel of my cameras.
I also just prefer the nikons' output in general.

Perhaps, because they work backwards when compared to any other brand. It's rare to find anyone who can switch between Canon SLRs and any other brand regularly. The ergonomics are just too different. All of the other brands are quite similar.
I prefer to use Olympus SLRs but Pentax and Nikon are my alternate choices. For point and shoot cameras, I've only had one and I wasn't comfortable with the guessing game.

Canon all the way - I'm absolutely in love with my 5D. I am head over heels about the full frame sensor in my camera. It's a thing of magnificent beauty.

Easy. Canon. I had Nikon bodies back in my film day and crossed over with the D70. Since then went 20D and then full frame with the 1DsII. I've been more than pleased with my purchase and my experience with the cameras. The images are a lot more crisp with Canon and the colors aren't as saturated (comparing the 20D to the D70).
Abstract
Oct 24, 2006, 04:10 AM
I prefer Nikons. My family and I have had 6 Canon point and shoots, so when hunting for DSLRs, I was 99.9% convinced that I was going to get whatever entry level Canon DSLR was on the market. I went to the store, picked up a 350D, and thought, "No, this can't be. How can I be having second thoughts? This is Canon we're talking about --- good ol' Canon. That camera company I was so sure of." Anyway, I picked up a D70s, and thought it felt much better. The D50 felt incredible. Anyway, I went home to do more research on the D50, and realized it was what I wanted. It took great photos, including under low light when compared to the 350D. Nikon also had several lenses that I really wanted. :)
If I had to go with another company, it'd be either Canon (not the 400D, but the 30D), or Pentax. I'll never be a pro, and I'm not a particularly picky person when it comes to superfine details (not even in my photos), so I think both companies would serve me well. :)

I've used Nikons the past 17 years. I've enjoyed the 4 that I've owned. I currently use the F100 for film and D100 for digital imaging.

I prefer the feel and quality I get from the Pentax line. I feel like in my price range I couldn't do any better. So I'll probably be shooting a K110 or K100 fairly soon. Damn college... Getting educated distracts me from spending all my money on a camera.

I've got an Olympus E-300.
Takes fantastic images and is very fast and easy to use.
I'm just a little miffed that the software needed to upgrade the firmware wasn't included with the camera.
Olympus also has some very innovative features not found on the others.
And the price is right for the basic cameras and lenses. Professional grade lenses are available but are quite expensive. The consumer grade lenses are just fine and lightweight.

I can't afford the setup I need (well my wife says we cant;) )
so I'm actually using a new Panasonic Lumix DZ 50 and it takes some superb pictures. Low light shots tend to get a lot of noise in them, though... but since I use it at the beach 90 percent of the time, this super zoom is perfect and it's always sunny here in Florida.:o

We are certainly a Canon family. Only P&S so far, started with an Olympus in 2000 which I admit had a great lens but only a 1.3 MP sensor. When I went to replace the Olympus I discovered that I did not like the output of the Olympus line at that time, I don't know why, everyone seemed to be moving to cheaper lenses and bodies. Eventually settled on an awesome Canon S45 and haven't looked back.
When I'm ready for a dSLR it'll be equivalent to a 400D/XTi and I'm drooling over some L glass which I'll never be able to afford. :) I have smaller hands and I find the D50 too big.

I wonder if the answers to this Poll is an "age" thing.
Those of us who were brought up on film, developing tanks and stained fingers and are old enough to have owned equipment in the 60's+ will no doubt concur that the likes of Leica (rangefinder), Nikon, Pentax (SLR) and Rolleiflex (TLR) ruled the roost.
Nowadays, in the digital era, Canon has joined Nikon in the lead.
Whatever the brand and accepting the fact that the process of photography is so much easier in this day and age, I often wonder if the final results have kept pace with these improvements??

I am most loyal to Canon because of my recent experiences. I have had the following Canons over the past few years: 300D (Digital Rebel), 20D, 30D, 5D, S400, S80. Why so many? I'm a wedding photographer.
When I started out, I got the Digital Rebel, which was a great learning tool. I still use it when I go scuba diving, because if the underwater case floods, I won't be too heartbroken.
The 20D and 30D are my most-used cameras now, because I have several EF-S lenses and those can't be mounted on the 5D. I love the 30D the most, but it's not that much better than the 20D really. My 20D and 30D come with me to all weddings.
I recently got the 5D and I love the quality and speed (for weddings anyway). I probably will end up loving this camera more than the others, but I am not familiar/comfortable enough with it to start using it as my main wedding camera. I also mentioned before that I have several EF-S lenses, so I have to invest in some more lenses for my 5D to make it more wedding-friendly.
My S400 died about a year ago after 3 years or so. I got several great photos from that little camera, and I am disappointed that I couldn't get it repaired (it cost too much to repair it, so I didn't bother).
My S80 was purchased to replace the S400. It's the best P&S I've ever used. It's a bit large, but it still fits in a pocket. It gives very sharp images and I take it everywhere (it lives in my work bag or my pocket).
Before I went digital, I used a Nikon N80 and F100 as a wedding assistant. Great cameras, but when it was time for me to become a pro, I decided to go Canon after doing about 9 months of research and trolling http://www.dpreview.com. It was a tough decision and I don't bash Nikon, but I'm glad I went with Canon.

There are way more votes than you typically see people posting in this forum. I think the whole Macrumors is getting in on this poll. It'd be interesting to break this poll down a little more...
Which film bodies do you prefer?
Which P&S cameras do you prefer?
Which DSLR bodies do you prefer?
I think the spread would become less distinct on the DSLR and film, and perhaps more distinct in P&S.

It's Nikon for me love the cameras. I have a strong feeling that this thread will turn into another giant Nikon/Canon Debate.

I like Sony;)
They make such good quality cameras;)
Okay ill bite :)
I have the a100 and it is fantastic, i have used both the d80 and 400d and in my opinion the sony or the nikon depending on your needs are excellent. the cannon is superb but wouldnt get one myself.
The P&S sony's get good reviews here and ive not seen a bad sony a100 review really.
The sony branded lens's are a bit much but with so much kM lenses about its easy to get a great lens!

I have had my Nikon D80 w/ 18-135mm lens for 3 weeks now and have been very pleased. My next lens purchase will be a 50mm 1.8 and I eventually want the 18-200mm VR once prices come down to earth.

While I shoot almost exclusively with my Nikon D2x and love it, I prefer my Canham MQC 5x7. It just doesn't get much use these days.

That's usually what happens when people only try one brand for an extended period of time. They get the soft fuzzy feeling but they don't remember how difficult it was to become accustomed to it. It's a lot like the Mac/Windows debate, with more choices.

When it gets down to around $600, I will get one and eBay my 18-135mm.

Used a lot of different cameras, started with Fuji ST 605 way back in the 70's moved to Nikon, Canon, back to Nikon and now use both Canon and Nikon. Nikon at my day job and Canon for my personal work. I prefer the AF system on the Canon EOS body and the smaller multiplication factor of 1.3 vs 1.5 compared to Nikon. If I could swing it it would be full frame cameras all the way at least the 5D if not the full frame EOS 1 bodies. Tried to get my boss to switch systems but we did not have the capital budget. Both are good. Both can provide a good living or a great hobby. Nikon does offer some advantage with ultra wide fixed and zoom lenses because of the lack of full frame sensors. This is not enough of an advantage to me to want to stick with them. I shoot stuff that needs to be full bleed 8.75 by 11.25 at 300 dpi and now to do that I have to interpolate the images with a Fred Miranda plug in or Genuine Fractals. The 5D would be a nice entry level camera to solve that problem.

Today, I preferred a Polaroid 110a - almost as old as my grandfather, but converted to take modern packfilm. Finished off a roll apiece in the Leica M7 and her backup, the Bessa R2A.
Tomorrow, I suspect I'll warm to the old Crown Graphic for a little while.
