Ordered my 15"/2.33/160/glossy last night :D... delivery on 11/14

I just thought it would be interesting to find out what everyone has been living with while waiting for the C2D Macbook Pro's to come out. Maybe we can have a little contest to see who's been suffering the most and for the longest time ;). Replies must be realistic and honest... if you say you've been living off of an Apple Newton or a IIE for all these years waiting for a C2D you're full of it (however if there were such a person... they'd be my hero).

I'll start out by saying that I've chosen to live for the past 1.5 years (or however long its been since the Intel switch was announced) with a 12" 600mhz iBook G3... with a 20gb hard drive. Thank God I have it maxed out with 640mb of ram or I wouldn't even have been able to run Tiger. I believe my laptop scored something around an 8 on the xbench :D (and that's with maxed out ram).

Anywho, I'd be interested to see if there are any other mentally insane people like myself who are so obsessed with saving money that they're willing to live in the desolate wasteland of obsoleteness until they're true dream machine comes out.

Nice choice of machine, mine has same specs! 160G HD?

I've had the same laptop for 3 years, ibook G4 12" 800MHz 640mb RAM and Panther, it was the first G4 ibook, bought as soon as they brought it out - no way I was going to buy a G3 when the powerbooks had G4's :D

actually my ibook has served me well, it still works great, infact i just got 2 new batteries for it thanks to the recall! I just want to be able to do more image editing and play the odd game otherwise it'd still be fine!

You must have got you ibook second hand 18mnths ago?

Finally giving up on Windows, Microsoft, Sony, etc....hopefully forever...

My current system: Sony Vaio PCG-GRT170 laptop - about 3 years old, and about 3 weeks away from completely and totally dying on me...

My first Mac ever: 17" Macbook Pro, Core 2 Duo 2.33GHz, 160GB 5400 RPM HD, Glossy screen, 2GB RAM @ 667 MHz...

I can't wait!!! Unfortunately, I have to (until mid-November :( )

Hope it's worth it...I'm hoping to have much more success with it ripping my many hundreds of vinyl records to mp3 than I have with my Sony Vaio...not to mention not worrying about spyware/malware, not having to reboot daily, etc...

Happy to be here!!!

My current computer is a Powerbook 1.25GHz 15", which was my first Mac. This PB is going to my daughter (replacing her iBook) as soon as my MBP arrives.

While I rarely need Windows, I do have to test web pages against Internet Explorer on a regular basis - and having an Intel processor will make that much easier. Virtual PC is better than nothing, but it is so slow that I found I got faster results running VMware on a Linux box, tunneled through an ssh network connection!

i am upgrading from nothing. in other words, i am a computer moocher who has used whatever he could get his hands on for . . . five years? before then, i had a girlfriend who owned several computers and was always kind enough to let me use one. after that, any time i've needed to use a computer (i am a freelance writer, every once in a while), i squat on a certain friend's floor and bang away at a laptop. i have used macs and PCs, and have no real preference.

yet i have this dream of being a rock and roll star, so for the good of my band, i have decided to buy a macbook pro with some of the ridiculous money (ridiculous compared to what i'd previously possessed) earned at my current day job (for which the rock band is an escape plan), so i can use garage band to record vocal and guitar tracks to send to the bassist and drummer so we can cut down practice time by about 75%. practice studios in tokyo cost a high hourly rate, and it takes a long time to show your rhythm section a new song enough times so they know where all the dynamics are. so garage band and a macbook pro with 3GB of RAM will very much help me record and tweak multiple guitar parts while also mixing in vocals and drums and bass for the other two guys (the bassist also owns a mac) to listen to and/or tweak.

i chose the 17" C2D MBP because it was the newest and biggest, and i'll be damned if the first computer i ever buy isn't top of the line.

i also want video editing (iMovie) so i can make idiotic videos to host on my website as a hobby. basically, i want to be as cool as the "i'm a mac" guy in those commercials, except without the dirty-looking facial hair. when people ask me what i'm doing this weekend i want to shrug and say "maybe making a movie or recording a song or blogging, making a website, i don't know, nothing in particular?!"

this woman in my office is really proud of me for "switching" to apple, and i kind of roll my eyes at the idea. i tell her, you know, there's not a stamp on my passport that says "PC user"--and she says, well, you never owned a mac before, right? and i say, well, no. i never owned a PC, either--and she says, well, that makes you a "switcher", anyway.

whatever!!

either way, this computer i use at work (it's a WinXP mutt) sometimes makes me want to light something on fire.

now!! if only apple would be nice and make the 17" available already, we'd be in business. i want to just walk into the apple store in ginza and say, "hello!!" and then they'll look at me and say, "hello!!" right back.

the guy in the ginza store told me to write my phone number on this card; said he'd call when th C2D 17"s come in. He passed me over to another guy; both guys had been practicing their english on me. The other guy tries to tell me, "If you like maybe the regular Core Duo, we can sell to your right away today?" and the other guy -- the manager -- barked at him, in Japanese, "LOOK at this guy. He KNOWS he wants the melon."

you see, "melon" is japanese apple-geek slang for "merom". ("merom" is spelled "me-ro-mu" in japanese, and "melon" is "me-ro-n" -- so yes.)

PB G4 1.67GHz 17" (1440 screen), 2GB RAM, 160GB HD, 2.4xDL DVD

to

MBP C2D 2.33GHz 17", stock (2GB, 160GB, etc.)

I believe the "up to 7x" for video encoding, anyway. I measured side by side ffmpeg encoding from mine to 2.16 MBP CD, and it was almost exactly 4x difference. Looking fwd to that speed, for sure: my iPod Video library still needs filling. ;) I've been doing the encoding using MP4, because of speed difference. Now, that'll be moot and I can save a couple hundred MB by using H-264.

Though I may still decide to go for the 200GB hd. I can imagine needing lots of space, but I'm not sure about the speed.

Upgrading from a Dual 1.25 GHz PowerMac G4 (1 GB RAM, 80 GB HD) to a 2.33 GHz Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro (2 GB RAM, 160 GB HDD).

I also have an Athlon 64 X2 3800+ desktop system, which I'm hoping the MacBook Pro will slowly take the place of.

The laptop I use for work (HP Compaq nc8000) died recently, and I'm still waiting on my employer to provide me a new one (sadly, it'll be another HP, not a Mac - we use custom software in the office that only runs on Windows), so I've been completely without a laptop lately, which has absolutely sucked. Being chained to my desk caused me to order the MBP (I was initially thinking of ordering a Mac Pro).

why? because eBay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=009&sspagename=STRK%3AMESE%3AIT&viewitem=&item=190046181058&rd=1&rd=1) makes it free. ;) (I did the student ADC, so it'll cost me $1800 total for the low-end MBP, including tax and the membership fee... 24 hours left, and I'm only $130 away from reaching that goal!).

i think ive been suffering the most...

5 year old PC, 700mhz, 40gig harddrive (though thankfully have a 200 gig external), 380 ram (or there abouts)...ive been good at keeping it going, all things considering...it has died a few times but ive somehow revived it over and over :p

im doing a graphic design degree, and believe it or not did quite a bit of photoshop on it! though now i use the g5 towers (or imac core 2 duos that have been recently bought) at my university

needless to say, this is a BIG upgrade... :D :D :D

I'm upgrading from an MBP CD also because I desperately need the extra RAM (and I also realized after 8+ months with the MBP that the 15" is too small for my needs).

But the RAM is the main driver. And the sad thing is I will have to upgrade again in the spring because what I really need is 4GB of RAM. But for now 3 is better than 2.

I'm upgrading a Dell Inspiron 8200 I bought a bit over 4 years ago. It's a p4 2 ghz, though half of the time I've had it it's run at 1.2 ghz due to a stupid SpeedStep bug. The hard drive also failed once (common in Inspiron 8200's -- happened to my friend 3 times) and had to be replaced. During my freshman and sophomore years of college (bought it right before I started.. just graduated) I had to reformat it more than once. The battery lasts about 15 - 20 minutes if the computer is simply idling. It has decent specs for the time -- 2 ghz, 512 mb RAM, 40 gig HD -- but I hate the thing.

The inspiron's plastic shell is literally COMING APART. If I move the computer off my desk or tilt the screen too much, there's a danger that the plastic connecting the LCD to the body will start to come apart and I have to jury-rig/click it back in place without breaking anything. I do this all the time. I'm amazed some insect hasn't crawled into a gap in the plastic and died. Heh, maybe it has.

What a POS. I can't wait for my first mac. :) It should be waiting for me at my apartment when I get home in about 5 hrs.

Oh and I'm going to a 15.4" 2.33 ghz/2 gig RAM/160 gig HD C2D MBP!

Not really upgrading but rather changing from a Dell XPS M1210 to a Mac. The primary reason behind this is that the Mac offers more features and has a better screen and GPU. Other than that, the Dell M1210 is an excellent laptop as well. My Dell XPS M1710 still dwarfs my soon to be delivered MBP. :)

mm... well... about noticing a difference... that all depends. You see your old computer was (and i don't think anyone will dispute me on this) a speed demon, it will truly be a chore for the new MBP to keep up to those standards. the C2D definately doesn't help the equation... I mean what's it got against a TM5800 993 MHz? Haha... hope you enjoy your new system.

whooo! Just got my 2.33 GHz (stock) MBP last night...upgraded from 667 MHz DVI TiBook. The difference is beyond words, including when playing PPC native games.

Wow, that must be an incredible difference! :D

Congrats.

OK, well - not directly... theres been quite a few computers between, but just goes to show how far back I've been (on and off) with Macs.

Most recently a black MB 2.0/2GB/160GB which just left the world of eBay a few days ago...

Well, OK, if we're going that far then I'm upgrading from a Mac SE

68000 @ 8Mhz (Am I remembering that right?)
20 MB drive (God, how much did I pay for that?)
and the all important 800k floppy.

Or am I really upgrading from my pizza box NeXT?

105mb drive? (Can't remember)
68040@33Mhz (Ooh, I was so proud of that smoking '040!)

G3 --> G4 --> Core Duo --> Core 2 Duo

All were remnants of each other: 12" 700mHz had 4 logic board problems, replaced with 800mHz G4 iBook. Sold G4 iBook and used it towards a 1.67gHz 17" Powerbook. Sold Powerbook and purchased a 15" MacBook Pro. Returned MBP and bought 15" 2.0 for the 256 video card. MBP has had 3 repairs, Applecare is replacing with my new MBP C2D

I'm upgrading from two different computers that I just sold. A Power Mac G5 Dual 2.0 and a 1.33 GHZ 12" iBook. Both were wonderful computers, but I wanted something that would be a better replacement that both of them.

So here's whats coming:

15" MBP 2.33/2GB RAM/120GB HD yay!

I loved my G5 but I know that the MBP connected to my 20" Viewsonic will just even better!

Personally, im going from:
P4 3.2GHz, 1GB RAM, 320GB + 200GB HDD, ATI 9600Pro 256MB
to
C2D MBP, 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD, ATI x1600 128MB

Although, over the past 7 years I've made great use of my dad's G3 Lombard, G4 iBook and Macbook. I've also used G3 iMac and G3 iBook for prolonged periods of time. All these systems are still sitting at home somewhere. I need to find some use for the Mac ones, as my PC will become my media/torrent hub.

Now if only the peope in China would hurry up making my machine.

Since I moved to the UK in March my girlfriend and I have been sharing a 2.4Ghz P4 with an MX440 Video Card and 512MB RAM. Running Gentoo..

Although I am only back home on the weekends. During the week I have nothing to use (which is the main reason I'm buying a laptop), however I have... *counts*... 5 computers on my desk at work right now to play with, so it isn't all bad.

Still, it's going to be very very very very very nice to have my C2D MBP. I've wanted a Laptop for about 6 years, and a Mac for the last three. Yay!

I am coming from a 1.67ghz G4 Powerbook (October 2005 Model)

I will miss the S-Video output since I use it all the time to show videos, I guess I'll just have to get the dongle for that. It just seems like the right time for me since they put the FW800 back into the 15" model and I use that on my Lacie to store lots of my projects.

Going from the last rev of the 15" 1 GHz TiBook with 1 GB of RAM and 60 GB 7200 RPM disk to a 17" C2D standard config with glossy screen. It will be almost exactly 4 years to the day since I got the TiBook, which was my first Mac. I'll be passing it on to my wife to replace an old Fujistu laptop she uses for Web browsing in the kitchen (while I cook).

The wait is killing me.

I'm upgrading from a 1GHz iBook G4. There wasn't an overwhelming need to replace that machine, it was still chugging along just fine. But I was given a bit of money from a graduate grant I'm on for a new laptop and thought it would be stupid not to take advantage.

My other machine at home is a dual 1GHz Power Mac G4. Again, still performing admirably, so probably will hold onto it for awhile.

Super Drive has been broken for years. Started of with 2 60gb hard drives put in an extra 120bg one and then one of the old ones died. Think my start up disk is gonna die soon.

Basically I'm in desperate need of a new machine!

I'm currently on a nine month old 17" PowerBook G4 (1.67GHz, Hi-Res) with 1.5Gb of RAM and the 120Gb disk.

Originally at the beginning of the calendar year I bought a hi-res 15" PowerBook, only to find that the battery wouldn't take a charge. I took it back to the retailer and exchanged it, only to find that the next 15" PowerBook's battery wouldn't take a charge either. This cycle repeated for four 15" PowerBooks. At the time I was reading about the problems with 15" batteries and the weird screen artifacts that plagued that run of 15" PowerBooks. So, after walking back into the retailer with the fourth 15" PowerBook, I decided to go with a 17" instead, given that the Apple discussions forums reported none of those problems with the 17". Alas, while I initially thought the 17" were too big, I am now totally stuck on the 17" display's real-estate and resolution. And, I have to say that my 17" PowerBook has been bulletproof -- it gets used about ten or twelve hours a day every day, and only gets rebooted about once a month on average, and then only for good reasons, not because it's hosed or anything.

So, my ship-date on my MBP C2D 17" 3Gb/160Gb is six days away and I know that shortly after I've spent time with my MBP, I'll have to part ways with my less than one-year-old PowerBook, and find it a good home, given that I can't justify keeping both.

I can only hope that the C2D turns out to be as reliable as my PowerBook.

From five month old 17" MBP CD --> 15" MBP C2D

This move was nice to be able to do (looking forward to speed bump, drive space) but it was really because I wanted to go back to a 15" laptop - otherwise I couldn't justify move. Before that was 17" G4 (1.2Ghz I think?) and that was from 15" TiBook (500MHz or so).

Before the upgrade is the key word. I'm out of the two week return policy. And if I did return it, my parents would be pissed at me, this cost me an arm and a leg to get and will have to last me 2 years. That's what I had to promise to get it.

man i donno... I think I'd take my parents being pissed at me if it meant getting a C2D. Plus why would they get mad anyways... i mean its not like you'd just throw away the CD and have to spend another 2.5k to get the C2D.

Well the Apple store is also 1.5 hours away from my house and it was like 7PM when I found out about the upgrade with that being my last day of the 14 day period. And my parents already complain enough about me not being able to hold onto a computer for more than a year (haven't been able to yet, longest is 8 months :p). And this is the "I had to sign my life away to get it" computer, although I still paid for the vast majority of it and will pay them back fully. But what's done is done. And if I returned it, there was no guarantee that I would be walking away with a C2D that day and I absolutely have to have at least one laptop at any given time.

It's a great, very current machine. Congrats and enjoy. I agree, if you could return it (easily) then maybe. Even then I think you'd have pay 15% restock at Apple (and it sounds like money is an issue here). They're both great machines.

I had a 17" MBP CD (1st rev) and despite some of the issues mine was really good. The 15" MBP C2D seems to be every bit as good and more refined. Once nice thing I noticed is that the speakers don't make that small "pop" when powering back on after not making a noise for a while.
