in attempting to access files on my mac from a PC, i am able to log in as the OSX user, but then am only able to access that users directory... how can i access the root of the system? i.e. Macintosh HD, connected firewire drives, etc...

I did it by editing my smb.conf file to include references to the volumes.

try using this SharePoints
http://wwww.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/12512
it makes sharing whole drives as easy as file sharing in windows (all you have to do is ight click a folder in XP). I use it all the time its a great little APP enjoy.
