I hate 527's with a passion. Extreme, tax exempt negativity with no party ties. GRRRRRRR

In the UK there is a lot of talk and quite some movment into getting rid of single large doners manipulating political parties.

I must admit the few political broadcasts i have seen from the US, those being repeated on UK news channels have been massivly negative, not intrested in what they can do Mr Everday American and the American country, but obsessed with slinging dirt at the other party.

Very, very ugly and as far away from democracy as it is almost possible to get.

I'm completely on your side, but the argument is that by limiting people's contributions, you are limiting democracy. I can see both sides but frankly I would love to see the end of 527's - luckily I have a Senator who is doing everything he can to cleanup campaigning.

The answer: PUBLIC FINANCING

Limit the amount candidates can spend and finance it publically. Republicans and Dems alike are for this method (don't worry, it isn't like your taxes would skyrocket).

All the main political partys in the Uk have agreed that funding from the state is the way future, they just can't agree on how to impement it yet.

On a side note, i know discussing politics is not wise on an internet forum (and thats understating it!;) ) but i've always found it odd that the US is a 2 party state.

A 3rd polical party would at least give a wider choice, or failing that, Robin Williams!

Doh! I clicked on this thinking it was a reference to Educations Savings Plans -- That's 529, not 527. Stupid numerical system.

Anyway, it's been a few years since my last poli sci class, but yes 527s need to have some additional regulation.

Out of curiosity though, what prompted this post?

See I'm not against tax-exempt political advertising, I just think they need to be tied to a candidate. 527's enable the extremely negative advertisements by not making anyone own up to them.

Charlie Brown for Congress!

Unregulated, name-less political ads prompted this post. Always negative- I'm getting sick of them.

True, it is a vicious cycle. ;)

Although, as a Political Science major at college, I do enjoy this sort of thing. :D :)

Well, the whole electoral process and the campaigns are what is of interest to me. :)

The extremely negative ads are simply annoying, although some what funny.

Technically, it's the "lower" house, but both houses have to pass a bill before it gets sent to the President to sign into law, so they're on fairly even terms in reality.
