after hitting the "mark all forums read" button, and after refreshing, after quitting the browser and cleaning the cache, no matter what i do the following threads are always at the top of the "new posts" list (Safari 2.0.4)

This is related to the server clock problem (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=248454) earlier. It caused the posts to appear to have been posted in the future so they will show up in New Posts for another couple of hours.
