Quick question...how would you go about checking to see if a 30Gb iPod you just brought was the original 5G iPod, or the revised (aka 5.5G iPod)? I know they are pretty much the same, but doesn't the 5.5G iPod have a brighter screen and better battery?...as well as the latest iPod software on by default??

Ta!

You can distinguish the Fifth Generation iPod (Late 2006) from the original Fifth Generation iPod by the last three digits of the serial number. The Fifth Generation iPod (Late 2006) serial number's last three digits will be one of the following: V9K, V9P, V9M, V9R, V9L, V9N, V9Q, V9S, WU9, WUA, WUB, and WUC.

The list of serials used to be a lot shorter, so they're clearly updating this as more 5.5G models are manufactured. I don't know how up-to-date it is.

The 5.5 Generation iPod has Johnny Depp as 'Captain Jack Sparrow' from "The Pirates Of The Caribean" on the box. If you don't have the box, on the iPod, select 'Music', and then scroll to the bottom. If 'Search' is there, it's a new one.

Also the 5.5 has the new earbud style -- no little foam earmuffs.

Isn't the "Search" feature available on the latest iPod Software Update which the first iPod 5G can still use?

Thanks for the other hints though...passing it on!

No. The two features which were introduced with the 5.5 were the SEARCH function at the bottom of the music menu, and the alphabetical display when scrolling through large numbers of menu items.

The 5.5 can do both, wheras the original 5G can only do the alphabetical display...
