Because MacRumors doesn't choose the ads that show up on the site...they use an ad service. They can block specific ads (like annoying pop-ups) if you can grab a screenshot to help them identify it, but that doesn't seem to be appropriate in this case.

All the better to have the Windows folks paying the bills for our site...

People are always touchy about this and I don't get it, I don't look at the ads ... I don't care.

Who cares what's advertised here so long as it isn't graphic or obscene ... I mean come on grow up!

Not very good ad placement at all.

They're just trying to head off potential switchers before they really dig into the site:

"Hey! Hey! Look over here! We've got great stuff to protect you from viruses and stuff! Pay no attention to the other junk on this page!"

:D

That doesn't bug me nearly as much as the persistent rumour that keeps going around Macs can now run Windows. I mean, what kind of $#!^ is that?

Really? I'd like to see some graphic and obscene marketing. Spice up MR. :D ;)

Ad's are just the price to pay for free stuff - like this forum! Wheeeeeee....:)

A friend of mine has been running a website for the past 12 years, or so. Most of the time he just 'passed the hat' to pay for it. He recently he started advertising to pay for it (and maybe pocket a few bucks). He does not get to choose the ads that are placed there. I am with the other poster who is inclined to just ignore them. Heck, Apple should advertise on Windows sites for that matter.

lol I highly doubt their add is very effective here... it just makes them look stupid for posting an add on a mac forum

Aside from MR, those Windows Live ads are literally everywhere.

I actually went there... it looks exactly like google. Like they literally lifted the google page and put a Windows logo on it. And they're touting it as some new amazing search engine!

And why would they even call it Windows anyway? Shouldn't it be Microsoft search? What does Windows have to do with anything? Are they suggesting that only Windows users use their search engine?

And take a look at this:

http://advertising.msn.com/microsoft-adcenter

Now they're copying AdSense too?

It almost even phonetically sounds the same...

Adsense Adsense Adsen... ter?

Well, see here's Microsoft's business plan. Incorporate Live into the browser (the search browser in the search box for IE7), so as to make people say "hey, I can just use the search feature in the browser, which is conveniently set up to take people to Windows Live. It wouldn't shock me if Windows began saying, hey, make Live your default search engine when you sign in to your hotmail and other stuff.

It's all about competing with Google. As for the sites looking like each other, well, they all look like each other. ;) So there's not really an issue there, either.
