I agree, I completely forgot about the contest until the polls were put on the top of the main forums page. Also if I remember correctly, the announcement was made on Page 2... thought it was quite odd.

Fantastic competition, if I say so myself. ;) Got to give props to the czar for moderating it smoothly.

All great entries, very creative. The race for best video ad was as tight as the time I competed in the 100-meter dash with spandex shorts one size too small.

I already have ad ideas for the next million or 5, and it'll be in the vein of liketom's tune your run entry.

I actually registered on this forum now only to tell you how extraordinarily great your 'generations' ad is. With a few minor changes (more non-static images and smooth transitions) this would EASILY beat Apple's own iPod ads. Talk about fantastic idea, style, and feel! Great work!!!

^^Wow, that's a rather nice compliment to SpicyApple. :)

And I agree, although I do see quite a few entries in both categories that beat out Apple's own efforts, so congratulations to everyone (who did a good job). :p

here is the first lame question of this thread. how was the "generations" video made? i wish i was that creative. even i was given a step-by-step instruction, i would never get to make it that beautiful.

nice going guys.

Tune your run just looked liked a low production values version of the ad that appears on the nike website, am afraid that this didn't seem to deserve any place amongst the winners. The tied video finalists were both excellent (ironic choice of song with "the winner is" or is that just extreme confidence;) ), and the print ad was by far and away the best video ipod mock up i have seen to date.

With out a doubt, both video adds were good --

But for me -- spicyapple's Generations was awesome!

I've dabbled in video creation a little bit -- I can only hope that one day I will be able to create something as good as generations.

Amazing!

Very much agree. I very much enjoyed the Generations ad.

I wonder if there's a possibility of collaborating with Apple on a contest.

There's so much buzz these days about "consumer-generated content." What's so incredible about this content is how it's more on the mark with what the company wants to communicate than what many agencies create.

I guess that's because people on here are Apple enthusiasts and agencies are just there to earn their money! ;)

MacBook Gold is a brillant marketing idea that Apple should actually use!

That being said, I don't get the tag line. "We recommend the kitchen" -- what does that mean? That the MacBook is hotter than the kitchen? It sounds cute, but I don't get it.

I voted for Spicy Apple, but I'm glad it was a tie with Kingsly because his was equally as good  . I liked ATD's the best too... wow its almost too much, the Dem's take the House and Senate and my votes here went to the eventual winners

You 3 should team up and start some kind of web advertising agency :)

I have rarely seen a video advertisement from Apple that is as poignant as 'Generations' or as illustrative of a Mac's abilities as 'Best Of.'

The current crop of Apple ads -- "I'm a Mac and I'm a PC" and the funky iPod videos -- are simply too abstract and don't even show a picture of the product! I really like 'Best Of' because it doesn't just talk about the Mac experience, it shows you the eye candy. And 'Generations' plays very well to the idea of music establishing a connection between people in and across generations (i.e., an iPod is for everyone). I don't know what Apple's own iPod video is doing??

Apple can learn some good lessons here.

It's officlal: story votes on MR are entirely random. I always wondered :)

Very creative work.

Different ways--I used ElectricImage once to do that with a painting my grandmother did :)

Basically you'd cut the foreground people out from the photo, and also retouch the people OUT of the photo (clone in background etc.--not easy) so you have just the background in one image, and just the people in another. Then use a 3D or video FX package to animate them on two different levels, or projected onto 3D models ("virtual matte painting").

Let the creator tell exactly what was done, though--it was excellent work!

I actually registered on this forum now only to tell you how extraordinarily great your 'generations' ad is. With a few minor changes (more non-static images and smooth transitions) this would EASILY beat Apple's own iPod ads. Talk about fantastic idea, style, and feel! Great work!!!Very cool! I have to ask, where were you yesterday? ;)

how was the "generations" video made? i wish i was that creative. even i was given a step-by-step instruction, i would never get to make it that beautiful. In After Effects mostly, with a bit of photoshop work to digitally add the earbuds and some easter eggs into the photos. The 3D effect was created by first making cutouts of the people and moving it to its own layer. The background was filled in. This was brought into AE for some animation to mimic a perspective change. This effect is used extensively in The Kid Stays in the Picture.

SpicyApple- what is the name of the song you used for the ad?
It's The Winner Is by Devotchka & Danna from the Little Miss Sunshine soundtrack. A link to all the music is available at the beginning of here thread.

Generations was a very special video
To all who commented on the generations ad, thanks!. :D :D

A little background, if I shall indulge myself.

The inspiration for this ad came through my current university course I'm taking on the History of Music. Fascinating subject! Did you know throughout all of recorded history (4,500 years) and up until the renaissance, only 40 pieces of ancient music were ever preserved? And it's only been the last 100 years or so we have the technology to hear the actual music as it was performed. These are amazing times for music! Apple's iPod is really as revolutionary as Edison's first wax cylinder.

So this idea gave way to this ad concept, that music is truly timeless and crosses many generations. Added on top of this, the definition of what music represents. I really like how concepts are layered so each person watching gets something unique out of it.

I was searching for old photographs showing people enjoying music, but it's interesting that as you go farther back in time as early as the 1920's, the subjects in the photographs became stiffer and stiffer. But as the decades roll on, there was a certain amount of life being breathed into the photographs.

Apple first used the earbud concept when they digitally added it to the 1984 commercial and I thought that was cool. I wanted to pay the same homage to the old photos.

:) ps. There are a few hidden easter eggs in the ad if you can spot them, mostly apple stickers and old ad campaigns like Think Different.

It's not a good idea to mention your competitors directly in an ad, it can be misread as an ad for them. Sometimes people walk away from ads only remembering a name. Better to hint at it or do a play on words. ;)

No, I did not know that. Very interesting.

Apple's iPod is really as revolutionary as Edison's first wax cylinder.

Umm, no, it's not. I love my iPod and all, but there really is no comparison between the 2. Ease of use and smart marketing is what puts the iPod where it is todau, not a revolutionary new technology.

Fantastic work! Winners were excellent.

One *small* request for anyone doing video ads: Ease off the pace.

Even the winners didn't quite linger long enough on images. As fast as I located new images that flicked onto screen, they'd disappear before I could take them in. Rapid movements and image changes are hard work on the viewer.

It reminded me of video camera users who pan rapidly around everywhere. They soon realise they have got to pan slowly to allow viewers to see stuff.

Ditto these ads. Give the viewer a chance to take in what's on the screen before moving on.

That will mean though cutting some stuff out to still do it in the same timeframe.

But hey, less is more.

One *small* request for anyone doing video ads: Ease off the pace. For the record, the contest format forced entrants to do some squeezing because of the 30-second limit.

The "Mac Fiction" entry by AstroBranden had to be shortened. Here (http://images.macrumors.com/im/contest200611/F993E3.mp4) you can find a longer version.

Which is why I said they'd have to cut stuff out. Less is more. Some certainly felt like they were trying to cram too many images or ideas into the 30 seconds.

I'm still blown away with how good the ads are, it was just my small request.

Since no one has called it, I will:

Generations is the Think Different of the 21st century. Poignant, inspirational, understated, and incredibly powerful, all wrapped up into a tidy 30 second package.

I also love the Keynote ad, reminds me of the response I received from my self-proclaimed Mac-hating friends when I did my European History oral presentation with Keynote, using a variety of the 3D transitions. Even the professor, a self-proclaimed PowerPoint freak, was impressed by the presentation.

SpicyApple.

I have to say it again. I have watched it a good 30 times or so.

The commercial almost brings me to tears.

You captured the heart of music and the meaning of music.

I put on my iPod and showed (on the TV) my wife. She is ready to but an iPod and she was in tears.

I cannot say enough positive about this. Apple should pay you a pile of money. I am going show this in my history classes next week. I will come up with a context.

Thank You so much!

There have been direct links posted for the song and plenty of comments about it. Back up to the first page and you'll see a post about the music used in the video ads.

Your comment comes across as being rather rude. It's like saying only blind people can appreciate music to its fullest because they aren't distracted by the artists or their surroundings.

Spicyapple matched great music with beautiful photos and text and that is what makes the ad so great. The music alone would be unable to evoke such a feeling on its own.
