2 - Half Life 2 - PC
3 - Silent hill (all of them) - PS2
4 - F.E.A.R - PC

jeez - well I probably should include old skool games like Manic Miner, Attic Attack, Knight Lore, Sabrewulf and all those spectrum classics - but I guess in the last 10 years it would be....

1. World Of Warcraft - PC
2. Championship Manager series (now FM)
3. Coloniszation PC
4. Star Wars KOTOR - Xbox
5. Half-Life

As you can see I tend to go for games that if you're not careful - you could waste your life playing :)

2- Yoshi's Island (GBA)
3- Links Awakning (GB)
4- Half Life 2 (PC)
5- Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Mega Drive)

I'm not even sure though. OoT is gamings pinnacle and I absolutely love F-Zero GX and Mario Kart DS. Haha. I suck at listing top games.

2. Shadow of the Colossus - PS2
3. Final Fantasy VI - SNES
4. Chrono Trigger - SNES
5. Half-Life or Half-Life 2 and its follow up episodes... I consider them all in the same family, so place 5 for all of them.

not ordered:

Civilization 2 : the second in the series not only set the benchmark for the series but also in terms of perhaps all turn based strategy games

Half Life: set a new Benchmark in terms of story telling inside of ego shooters and also brought out a modding community with it just like civ2 did before

Super Mario 3 (NES): the perfection of the simple side scrolling jump and run

Steel Panthers (PC): looking for steep learning curve, endless replaybility, huge campaigns, nearly endless amount of historic accurate vehicles with all their flaws, real strategy ... then this is the only game for you

the last one was hard but from the time played i guess it was

International Superstar Soccer '98 (N64): at first shocked about the blurry graphics but then after discovering the, at the time unheard, deep football gameplay i was hooked .. believe it or not: the gameplay is more complex than FIFA 06.. which was released 8 years later

and of course i have some runner ups:

Perfect Dark: more than 60 weapons with 2 firing modes, co-op, slow mo, great art in terms of level, massive multiplayer with more modes than most games have now in 2006 and so much more .. and all fitted on a N64 cartridge

<insert SSI game title here>: from Panzer General to Silent Hunter simply to much games i absolutely love

Not in any real order:

1)Contra (NES)
2)Halo 2 (XBox)
3)Guitar Hero (PS2)
4)FFVII (PS1)
5)Golden Eye (N64)

I just tried to think of the games I have spent the most time playing. Some, like Golden Eye, I could never really play again because of graphics and I am used to dual analog sticks instead of the one. But I spent soo much time playing that game with friends and having a great time that it deserved to be on the list.

In no particular order:

1) Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga - GBA
2) Mario Kart 64 - N64
3) Medievia - MUD
4) Warcraft III - PC/Mac
5) Quake ... tough call between the original, 2, and 3 for me. Three was probably the "best" of the series, but I spent so much time playing Quake 2 multiplayer it's a favorite. One was just THE Quake though, with it's original NIN CD audio soundtrack; just a plain classic.

I do not have a top 5 favourites. After 20+ years of gaming that would be asking the impossible. However....

My Top 5 most influential games.

1 - 3D Monster Maze (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3D_monster_maze) - ZX81 The first home computer game I ever had

2 - Super Mario Bros (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Mario_Bros) - NES - maybe not my favourite mario bros game but the one that started it all

3 - Granny's Garden (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Granny%27s_Garden) BBC Micro - when computing at school was fun ;)

4 - Half-Life (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Half-Life) - PC The first FPS to be story driven and its inital impact still lingers (even if the later 'alien' levels where total *****)

5 - Zelda : Link To The Past (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Link_to_the_past) SNES I never played the first Zelda games even though I owned a NES, this was my first on my new snes at the time and with MarioWorld still remains one of the most influential RPG series to date.

I'm not even sure though. OoT is gamings pinnacle and I absolutely love F-Zero GX and Mario Kart DS. Haha. I suck at listing top games.

It's not that you suck, it's that top 5's are really impossible to compile as moods and tastes change on a daily basis. And when you start to think about it there are games that you forgot about, but when thinking about lists like this they spring to mind and you realise how much you loved them.

In no particular order:

1) Football Manager/Championship Manager (PC) - The undisputed best management sim.

2) Civilization series (PC) - II's probably my favourite so far, but I haven't really had the chance to play IV yet.

3) Mario Kart (SNES) - I pretended to be friends with someone just so I could play this on their SNES

4) Super Mario World - The first game I played where it really did feel like a 'world'.

5) Shenmue (Dreamcast) - Shenmue on the Wii would be awesome...

EDIT: Should give an honourable mention to Sim City 2000.

1) Ultima Underworld (PC)
1993 vintage First-Person roleplaying game. IMHO the ease of use of the user interface has yet to be improved - I don't know why other first-person RPGs didn't copy it.
2) Ultima Underworld II (PC)
The sequel to the first one was almost as good.
3) X-Com (PC)
Turn-based combat game based where you're a special forces team battling an alien invasion. Brillant concept - back me up those that remember this awesome game!!!
4) Civilizaton (PC)
Best strategy game of all time. Sequels haven't really added fundamentally to the original, except for maybe Civ IV (with its whole Religion, and Great People thing for example), but I haven't gotten into it enough yet to judge.
5) World of Warcraft (Mac)
What is there to say that hasn't already been said. Best MMORPG implementation by far that I've played.

Coming on Strong though: ***Second Life*** (Mac). It's hard to categorize this as a "game" since although it is an MMORPG there is no real purpose to it. I guess the closest parallel would be Sims Online, albeit with almost infinitely greater degrees of freedom. The key thing about Second Life is that it to create almost any object you want through its 3D modeling tools and scripting language. I'm just getting into Second Life now, but I predict in a few months this I may rank this "game" #1 of all time (if they can speed up the Mac interface and make it less laggy, that is).

I'll have to get back to you guys on this one... being an FF boy, I'd list mostly those (particularly VII, IX, VI, and IV), but after all the Zelda threads around here, I'm about to start playing those. I've started the original for the NES and it's great, followed by LttP, OoT, MM, and Wind Waker. That could become my top 5 right there, heh. Oh yeah, and TP. Like I think MRU said, depends on the mood.

#1 - Flight Simulator (since 1988, some versions I liked more than others)
#2 - Riven (Myst II)
#3 - Splinter Cell, Chaos Theory (PC)
#4 - Colin McRae Rally 2005 (Xbox)
#5 - Call of Duty (PC)

I know Flight simulator isn't really a "game", but I've spent hundreds of hours flying around. Don't know what it is about it. Maybe I should have been a pilot...

In no order:

Championship Manager / Football Manager - great game and very addictive

Sims 1 - I still havn't got into the Sims 2 yet but I am trying (so is the bank manager every time an expansion comes out!)

Age Of Empires 2 - Another addictive game with a sequel that I havn't got into yet.

Tiger Woods - I can still see some of me in the great man!

Open Transport Tycoon - What a great retro game and so much fun to play.

And if I could just squeeze another one in...

Command and Conquer Series - Classic (need I say anymore?)

it's better than the first that's for sure. I enojyed it as a bit of mindless shooter/slo-mo actioner. The story is alright too.

For me, it would have to be – in no particular order and with the platform I played them the most on...

Championship/Football Manager Series (Mac)
I like football, and I like stats, and I like things with an anal amount of detail. So I very much like this series.

Tetris (Gameboy)
Sometimes simple is best, and in my book the Gameboy version is the definitive one.

Sim City 2000 (Mac)
The newer version is way ahead in terms of graphics and stuff, but for straightforward playability you can't beat 2000.

Streetfighter (Amiga)
Beat 'em up games are at their best when you're playing it with a group of mates, and I've very fond memories of us all duffing each other up on this one.

Space Invaders (various)
I can play this one for hours.

Its sweet. Mindless shooting and killing really. But what makes it so fun is getting all the mods for it. There is this one where you get Matrix powers so you can do the Neo jump and such, and these uzis that shoot so fast you can actually juggle people in the air with them...its so fun :D

The N64 is what got me into gaming... so many fantastic games were released on it. Lots of good memories.:)

Monkey Island was genius. They really don't make games like that anymore.

I wonder what Ron Gilbert is up to now? Probably lying in a hammock and drinking lots of cocktails on some Caribbean beach with all the money I hope he made from his LucasArt work!

Yeah most LucasArts adventure games from the late 80s to around the mid 90s were genious, I just wish Day of The Tentacle got a sequel, that game was so much fun, I havent played Escape from Monkey Island (Shame on me) but I don't think it lives up to the rest of the series (I loved Dom Armato's performance in CMI), they were so funny games, even without voice acting.

Oh man, good memories.

As for my list:

in no particular order

LoZ Ocarina of Time
Devil May Cry 3
Metal Gear Solid 3
Day of The Tentacle
Super Mario Bros.

Hmm, my list should really have 20 spots, I'm missing so much games on that list.

1. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES)
2. Final Fantasy VII (PSX)
3. Shining Force (Genesis)
4. Super Mario 3 (NES)
5. Zork Grand Inquisitor (PC)

Honorable Mentions: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64), Everquest (PC), World of Warcraft (PC), Monkey Island 3 (PC), 007 Goldeneye (N64), Planescape Torment (PC), Chronotrigger (SNES)

All of my honorable mentions take rotations in the Top 5 occationally. Zelda: OoT is the best 3D Zelda but after playing the Minish Cap I found myself likeing the old-school top down goodness more...I am amazed about how few people know about the Shining Force series. It is by far the best RPG strategy series IMO. SF 2 and 3 are masterpieces that stand up to Chronotrigger and the Final Fantasy games but nobody ever played them much...My heart is soft for the original Shining Force over the sequels though because it was the first one I played...

Its amazing to me looking at everybody's picks how many people still hold Nintendo games up in their top five after two generations of Sony and Microsoft dominance. It just goes to show that graphics aren't everything...

Well, considering the overwhelming preference of Nintendo over MS and Sony around here, it really doesn't say anything. Not that I'm disagreeing with that general consensus.

Strangely enough, DotT is a sequel. But it was a classic game. Aah.

Well, considering the overwhelming preference of Nintendo over MS and Sony around here, it really doesn't say anything. Not that I'm disagreeing with that general consensus. I agree there is some bias on these boards towards Nintendo (me included) but still Nintendo's games do tend to be extremely well made so I guess it is no surprise that many of them are in the Top 10 lists. The Wikipedia site for "Best game ever (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_and_video_games_that_have_been_considered_the_greatest_ever)" seems to confirm that a large portion of people consider Ocarina to be the best game ever. Personally, I like the 2D Zelda games better (probably because of my age) but much of my favorite games have a nostalgic feeling that I just don't feel with many newer games. I think part of it is a lack of story or depth as I like to feel like I just finished a 500 + page page-turner when I get through with a game. Games like FFVII were great because of the feeling of acomplishment when you beat them. I don't get that much now though...

In terms of time wasted, the biggest ones that stick in my head are:

1. Red Orchestra
2. Marathon II
3. Hellcats: Missions At Leyte Gulf
4. Escape Velocity (the first one)
5. Metroid II (on the Game Boy)

Just 5 eh? Tough!

Though I have a definite #1, the others are in random order:

#1:

Super Smash Brothers: Melee: My favorite game of all time, my most played game of all time, the most fun multiplayer game ever made. I could go on and on for pages about my love of SSB:Melee. Perfection.

The rest:

Guitar Hero: Lately I've become a sucker for good rhythm/music games (see also: Gitaroo Man, Amplitude, Samba de Amigo, Rhythm Tengoku and the Karaoke Revolution games) and this one takes the cake as my favorite in the genre. Harmonix were my favorite new developers of the previous generation of consoles and I shed a tear when they were bought out by MTV. Ironically, this game might drop out of the list in a matter of hours as I will be picking up part 2 during my lunch break.

The Secret of Monkey Island:Ron Gilbert? Genius. Guybrush Threepwood? Friggin Best. Character. Ever.

Mario 64: Some people say Mario lost a little something in his transition to 3-d. I am not one of those people.

Mike Tyson's Punchout: The sentimental pick. This was my favorite game as a kid. It still holds up surprisingly well.

Starcraft / Starcraft: Brood War
One of the best RTS games I've ever played. It's timeless, as many people still play it to this date even though it is 7 years old now. Great storylines great action, great overall system/UI. Can't wait for Starcraft 2.

Civilization II
The best of the Civ games (although I haven't played Civ IV yet) The perfect mix and balance of everything. Also one of the most addictive games I've ever played. ("Just one more turn!")

Final Fantasy VII
Epic, gripping and immersive story, well ahead of its time when it was released. One of the greatest games ever made. If they remastered it for PS3 (and actually finished it!) I might actually buy a PS3.

Metal Gear Solid
Not MGS2 or MGS3, but MGS for PSX. This really broke the mold for me. The attention to detail was amazing, the freedom, the characters, the concepts - imaginative and fresh. It was like playing through a movie.

Wasteland
They don't make games like this anymore. This is possibly my favorite game of all the ones listed here. So unique at the time, so well done... Proof that flashy graphics do not make a good game. Can't say enough good things about it. For anyone who never played it, you're truly missing out.

OR maybe he could be like every other person in 2006 and have a blog:

It's a shame he doesn't update as often as he used to.

BTW, he's one of the good guys:

Starcraft - Mac/Windows
Still my favorite RTS. I haven't played one I liked as much since it was released.

Pirates! - Amiga
Yes, the Windows version is great fun, but I'm judging on the fond memories I have for this one.

Worms - Mac/Windows
I never regretted purchasing this game. Probably my favorite game series ever. Played the original tons with my brother back in the day. While I didn't mind the switch to 3D, there's just simply something a lot more appealing about the old 2D.

Populous II - Amiga
The first one was fun, but this one was even better. A much greater variety of disasters and not everything looked exactly the same as in the original. I'd say this one was Molyneaux's best God-game.

The Longest Journey - Windows
Over the years I've played many good adventure games, but this one is, in my mind, the best I've come across. It's a shame how dumbed down Dreamfall was. It, too, had a great story, but, sadly, the gameplay was more than lacking.

Honorable Mention:
Paradroid - Commodore64
I used to play this game to death on my ole bread box. Yes, I've tried the 3D remake that was made. Not bad, but I still prefer the original.

While many people here are Nintendo fans, this has not always been the case. Looking back on last gen threads, xBox was viewed as evil because its from MS and PS2 and Gamecube were both popular, but PS2 was more popular.

Maybe its because of new people who come to this part of the forum, or because some people stopped coming here. Or is it because the Wii looks promising?

Most likely a little bit of all of them!

Aside from that Nintendo has been around as a gaming entity alot longer than Sony or Microsoft.

My god those games ate hours out of my life. The 3D version of paradroid was a dissapointment alright.

Populous 1 & 2 were fantastic.

Can't do it, but I'm going to classify them (roughly) by date. These are all games that succeeded in drawing me into their world, so that I just wanted to play and play and play. I only come across about one game a year like that though - most of the time I find games to be a bit meh:

Real Old-School:
Dark Castle (Mac)
Transylvania (Mac)
Skyfox(Apple ][)
Zork (Mac)
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy(Mac)

Moderately Old-school:
The Dig(PC)
Marathon(Mac) (seriously, the Bungie universe rocks!)
Myst
Tomb Raider
Broken Sword

Modern (kinda):
Silent Hill
Final Fantasy VII
GTA
Riven
Kingdom Hearts

God, not you too, Shard! I thought you were so cool! And here you are liking the single worst game in the whole series! The only FF that deserves to get re-made is VI. FFVII should be called "Fanboy ******** VII." :(

Also, there are not nearly enough mentions of the greatest game ever, ICO, in this thread. I expect better out of all of you. :p
