yippeee :) only 10 more days for us Europeans to wait :o
IGN
Gears of War is a must-have game, pure and simple. Epic has effectively created a new gaming universe, and the rich story of planet Sera holds its own with the likes of Hyrule, City 17 and the Mushroom-friggin'-Kingdom. A game so gorgeous, both visually and audibly, that is this fun to play comes along only a handful of times a console generation.
There is a healthy learning curve to the cover system, but those who master it will find Epic's twisting and turning and rolling an exciting change-up in the shooter genre, a blend of fast-arcade action and basic, tactical maneuvering. The Insane difficulty level gives Gears legs months after you've finished the relatively-short campaign, and even with a friend it is an impossible, irresistible challenge. Versus is a one-trick pony, consisting of a team deathmatch with three basic variations, but damn, that mode is fun. Downloadable content is on the way, says Epic, but as it stands today, we are left wanting more. Bottom line: Gears of War is the special kind of game that makes you feel like a kid again, a sadistic little bastard obsessed with gore and chainsaws.
Gamespot
Gears of War is a game that capitalizes on all of the promises made by the next generation of gaming. It looks more than a few steps beyond what consoles have been doing to this point, and the gameplay is supremely fulfilling from start to finish in all of its various modes. While there have certainly been plenty of similar shooters before it, the game's great weapons, amazing graphics, and absolutely thrilling action make it stand out from the pack in a big, big way.

i saw the ad for this game at a movie theater last night. it was the cinematic ad with the remake of 'mad world' as the only audio. yada yada yada, i am thinking of buying a 360 now.

Gears will be the first 360 title I get when I buy a 360 sometime next year...it looks awesome. Glad to see the hype delivered on this one (like Halo 2), where its failed on others (like Killzone). :)

Now we have something hype-worthy; people actually playing through the game.
Too gory for my taste but looks like a good game.

Add Teamxbox to that list with a 9.6 (of 10).
From IGN:Gears of War is the best looking game I've ever seen. No contest.
Teamxbox:This is by far the best looking video game we've ever seen.
Gamespot:Gears of War is an outsanding technical achievement, but in addition to looking and sounding amazing, it's a seriously awesome action game.
Stellar graphics reset the bar for what consoles can do visually.Because, as we've discussed around here before, you just can't have good graphics and good gameplay. No sir. One or the other.

The old one..."the Halo killer". (Killzone 1 for Ps2.)
Although I'm sure they'll say the same thing about Killzone 2 whenever they get around to making the game instead of messing around with "target videos".

Yes, that was all a bit embarrassing wasn't it. Did the dev's ever say it was actual gameplay on the upcoming Killzone? I remember seeing it, then when I found out it wasn't actual gameplay, a part of me died...

No, I think after everyone got over the initial "holy @^#$" shock, and people started calling BS, they came out and said "target video". Well, Sony never said either, they played it off as gameplay footage; I remember the developer though saying it was "target video".
As for it happening...as good as games have started becoming (like Gears), I can't say it's impossible. Gears looks phenominal. I've seen pictures of the final Motor Storm (Ps3) and they look as good as the video shown last year at E3, so I guess Motor Storm will end up being as good as advertised. Now, whether or not Killzone 2 delivers on the gameplay like Gears apparently does, and Halo did do...well that's another thing. :)

Eurogamer is a bit more critical about it. And they are usually spot on ( I find anyway) Ah well, I will see for myself tomorrow :D

"In a sense, Gears of War lives up to expectations in that it's one of the most intensely beautiful-looking games ever made, but is one that plays by the rules in the gameplay stakes. If you want to gorge on a next generation audio-visual feast then Gears of Wars is a king's banquet. But what of the gameplay pudding that Peter Moore so often reminds us that he likes? The proof, he says, is in the eating, and in this case Gears of War sticks to a well-worn recipe."

I was pretty choked. After hearing all about "emergence day" blah blah, I went to all the local stores and none of them had GOW. Oh well, waiting this long, I guess another while won't hurt.
Still, howcome nobody knows when this thing is coming for sure? An EB games guy said it was because in Canada games include french localized instruction booklets, but it would seem like Epic would've been able to have those ready in time...

The dude at EB here in Coquitlam told me the 8th, so I hope that is true because I really wanna play it.
And "emergence day" is actually the 12th, there is a big XBL event going on.

I picked up a copy today. Definitely redefines the genre a bit. Playing it for the first time felt like playing halo for the very first time when it was released. I played co-op with my brother over live for 2 hours and it was seamless. He joined right into my game while I was in the middle of a level.
This is the first 360 game that truly blew me away with it's amazing visuals.

If you happen to die, you almost find yourself cheering when someone on your teams chops the last guy up with the chainsaw..feeels like watching your favorite sports team win in the final seconds of a huge game.. you have to experience this..

Yes, it's like CS in a way. Warzone is just a basic DM game where there is 4v4. When you die, you have to wait until the next round (when all of the players on one team are dead). There is also "Assassination" and "Execution" modes and those are self explanitory.

Then again I rarely listen to in-game music when I play 360 anymore, gotta love the music player! Maybe we GTA4 comes out because they have awesome soundtracks, and the new one for PSP has Easy Lover :D

Naturally, nobody here in Buffalo had it in stock. So, I went to Best Buy on lunch and there were a bunch of guys athe 360 games rack looking for it. I looked at the floor of the rack and saw a lone package sitting there with a security device wrapped around it. I grabbed it and low and behold it was Gear of War Collectors Edition! I felt bad for those other guys (not).
Can't wait to get home and fire it up in 1080 on my 61" Sammy DLP! :)

OK covered this earlier today... Micheal Andrews scored it , but it's Gary Jules singing the vocals on it.
It's just iTunes have given artist credit to composer Micheal Andrews rather than the vocalist, which we would give credit to normally.

Gary Jules
A cover of Mad World performed by Gary Jules appears on a compilation album released by San Francisco radio station KLLC. The compilation album, featuring stripped-down performances and acoustic variations of hit pop songs, is released annually out of charity for breast cancer awareness. This version is also used in the movie Donnie Darko, at the end of the film, as well as in it's soundtrack.

in execution mode you don't die unless someone kills you with a "fatal" move. If your bleeding out a team mate can revive you. So if you don't want to wait for the rounds to start and want a better chance of staying alive you can play this mode. But you don't end up waiting too long so it isn't bad. There are going to be a lot more updates to the online mode. Its really fun online and thats with an incomplete online mode (developers said a lot more to come)..
The coolest thing is co-op. You can literally play the entire game online with someone (friend or stranger). The cut scenes and everything is part of the online co-op mode. It is exacatly like the offline version.

So I went to Wal-Mart yesterday morning before class, and they still hadn't gotten the game, so after school, I called EBGAMES and they had just gotten their shipment in. I asked the guy if there were any copies left, and he said yeah, tons of copies. So I booked it down there, and when I got there, they said they were filling pre-orders (which I didn't have, because I'm generally against the concept). But when I explained that I was the guy who called 10 mins. earlier, and that they had said that they had tons of copies, they brought me one out.
I'm not usually one to go nuts and try to buy things on release day, but I haven't had any super satisfying gaming on the 360 for a while. About the Berserker level for the poster above, I played that level co-op with my bro, and I thought it was relatively easy. When I thought about it, its because my bro could distract the berserker while I got into position, and then he would run to where I was and we'd both dodge the berserker when he crashed us. I'd be lying if I said I didn't die a couple times though.
Overall, I'm loving the game's visuals - a lot like an Unreal series game. All that remains is to see whether the replay value is there.

Just in case any of you forgot, the 360, unlike the original Xbox, does not use an Intel CPU. Xbox games (including Halo and Halo 2) could easily be ported to the PC. Xbox 360 games are not so easily ported... and besides, Microsoft wants to drive 360 sales, and GoW is a great game for doing that.

Yeah, that would make things a lot tougher. Because even the best AI can't make plans with you while sitting on the couch. I can't remember now though if I could go heal my brother or vice versa. I think for that stage it might've been if he died I died type of deal too.

True enough, but does anyone know if a game that has that "only on xbox" stamp has ever come to another platform? I can't think of any... I'm thinking of the project gotham series, halo 2.... and thats about all I can think of.

I bet that when it does finally come out for the pc it will have some outrageous requirements that will no doubt probably require a video card upgrade and additional memory as well. Turning a $50 game into a 500 investment for a pc that will be current for a few months until the next big game comes out. No thanks I am happy not woorying about upgrading every 6 months with my 2footer imac and my 360. I already spent $500 on the x360 + game. I'm not so optimistic about the game.
Visually, it's beautiful.
Ideas? Not so original, but that's really not what shooters are about anyway. I mean, Pitch Black was even referenced in the game at the first night time scene when you can get eaten alive for being in the dark.
Multiplayer? Not that great. small player numbers, very little features, and the "bleed out sequence" is ********.
Gameplay? Eh, it's okay. The fact that I can't crouch at all without be next to something, really annoys the hell out of me.
However, I've unlocked some nifty Achievements, and after you beat the first berzerker (in Hardcore mode) you get an achievement titled "My Love For You Is Like a Truck." If you don't know where that comes from, then shame on you and your family.
Apparently after hosting 100 games, you'll unlock an achievement called "A Series Of Tubes" lol.

I am quite disappointed on how short the game is. I got it Tuesday night, and now I just finished it, was playing around 1.5-2 hours a day. I was hoping it would at least last a week.

True enough, but does anyone know if a game that has that "only on xbox" stamp has ever come to another platform? I can't think of any... I'm thinking of the project gotham series, halo 2.... and thats about all I can think of.
I say this, because Gears has that little stamp on it, obviously.
Didn't Halo 1 have that little stamp? And it came out for PC/Mac. And Halo2 is coming out for PC and it has the stamp too.

Only on Xbox refers to Console only.
Fable, Sudeki etc... all M$ games came out on pc and still carried the Only on Xbox logo...

Don't ALL sport game suck? Graphics and game play are just... horrible. Always have been and always will be. Especially EA's games. Those guys don't know what the hell they're doing. NHL franchise? The graphics look straight out of the Sega era, and the menus/save functions are terrible.

I try them, but I'm never impressed even the slightest by any of them.

The only sports games I enjoy these days are ones that aren't "real" sports...for example, Super Mario Strikers (more focused on blowing your opponents away) for Soccer. Same for racing, for example Burnout 3 (again, blowing away your opponents).
Last regular sports game I enjoyed was Tecmo Bowl for NES.

you know, after playing this game some more, I have one major complaint about it.
It feels far too much like the game designer is telling me what to do. The guys come in at point A, I come in at point B and between us is a perfectly placed set of things to cover behind. It doesn't feel 'natural'. It feels like the programmer went "Ok, you can hide here, or here or here." and thats all I can do. Sometimes you can try to flank them but again, this feels too much like the designer wants me ot do it. At some points it has almost (but not quite) felt like a rail shooter, kind of like Time Crisis. you hide then pop out, kill the guys and move along to the next stage.
Still a fun game, but i am wondering how many time i will be able to play through this.

I think they included a campaign mode because, well, they have to. You can expand that a bit with co-op mode, but the meat of the game is in the multiplayer.
Also, have you gone through the game on Insane difficulty yet? :p

The game IS co-op. Single player isn't nearly as much fun :( Your squad mates are morons! I keep dying over and over because I am used to my friend keeping guys off me while I sneak in for the kill.
I will never play this on insane because I don't like games being HARD. I like a challenge, but endless dying, the 1 wrong move and its gameover thing picks me. It becomes more trial and error based until you memorize all the guys and where they can hide and such (ie. move here, kill him, jump here, kill him, etc.)
I guess I should finally break down and buy XBL so I can play multiplayer...although the problem with multiplayer is you have the zealots who have their 10,000 kills and just slaughter you endlessly.....
*sigh* well enough of my n00bish rant :D

I still like it though

Well, this game is pretty freaking awesome. I'd have to say that it certainly does live up to the hype. Had some friends over and they couldn't believe what they were seeing on my set. :D
Going to hook up with a friend tonight and try the campaign co-op. If it's anywhere near as good as others have been saying I'll be in for a real treat.

I got mine last week and finished it saturday. Then i tried the 48 hour trial of online gameplay, and i must say it might push me to get xbl also. I just dont like that 8 is the max number of players.

Just in case you didn't know, that amount varies based on the game. BF2, for example, does 32 players if memory serves.
Between GoW and Marvel Ultimate Alliance, my XBL has been getting quite the co-op workout lately.
I love online co-op! :D

Nah, I've been a member of the dark side for awhile now. Still have my original Xbox, just took me awhile to get a 360. ;) Couldn't pass it up anymore...360 is hitting full stride now.

Picked up GoW this past weekend. LOVE it! Played a little of the campaign to learn the basics and went on to XBL last night to play. Got my butt handed to me for awhile. but eventually started to hold my own.
I only have one friend with a 360 and he is getting GoW later this week. I can't wait to try out the co-op together as well. just wish some more of my friends would get one.

So GoW came out 2day here, and im going into work 2mora to get mine, I've read IGN, etc, etc, but they are too professional, as it were. So I'm looking for anyone who owns the game to, well basically say Yeh or Nay on the fact that it is supposed to be the 'killer title' for the 360 this year? Is it really that good? I'll be buying it regardless, but what do you think?
Cheers peeps.

Some advice to beating the General on Insane, by yourself.
Grab a torque bow. Use it instead of your shotgun. Don't bother with the sniper rifle
Load up on ammo and grenades before you fight him.
Hide behind the first barricade.
Your buddy will go out, guns a blazin like an a-hole, leavin you all alone.
start the bow up, pop up and nail him to get the kryll off, reload quick, pop up and cap him in the head with the bow, repeat. Do this as many times as you can before he gets about 30 feet away.
Now, the general will probably will come up on your left (if your back is against the first barricade, it'll be the right of the character, but left side of the screen.) around the big metal box. I assume by now you know how to properly aim a blind grenade toss. you want to get them right in front of the box as he turns the corner.
Blind toss all four grenades at the bastard's big feat, then quickly switch to your lancer, and blind fire into him while all the grenades go off. quick reload if you have to and keep firing.
With any luck, he will die right before he steps on you. I tried killing him for over an hour on Insane, and this is the only method I got to work.
Don't bother running to the turret, Kryll eat your face before you can even mount it. And don't worry about the big flying guys, they'll shoot at you but you just have to stay covered, don't move. They'll fly by and the helicopter will take care of them.

played it today (though only demo station):
impressions: lots of character detail
very good light effects but i guess it was a boring part since i found dark messiah on the pc of a friend much more impressive in that point
cover system fun
nice details over viewing distance
one button for context sensitive covering and dashing = annoying ... no, just no ... if they seperated dashing and covering it might have worked better .. i personally found my character not doing what i wanted half of the time
shooting _and_ reloading with the right index finger = minor annoyance, i guess that can be chanced... found that really confusing .. needs to be set to left index finger or right thumb
apart from that it's really ok ... i would give it 8.5 or perhaps 9.0 tops though...
another confusing thing is that i couldn't really say when i hit an enemy enough ... they seem to loose bathtubs of blood and still go on even after head shots
i guess rainbow six is more kinda my deal with more complicated controls and weapons doing more punch
