I know this should be pretty easy, but I can't figure out how to do it. (I just started using more than one Mac at home, which is why the issue has come up.)

In the Classic Mac OS, I remember being able to mount volumes from other computers on my network. I can't figure out how to do this in my home (AirPort) network. I know it's possible to share the contents of one's public folder, but this is more effort than I want to undertake. Is there a way to mount one computer's hard drive on the desktop of another computer?

Just login as the owner of the other computer by inputing the user name and pasword and you will have access to the whole drive

you can just go to connect to server in the finder's menubar item called "go". you type in the user name of the other comp's and the password, and you got it! that's if you wanna do it wirelessly.
you have to be on the same network.
