The problem arises when I create an eps. file in quark and open it in photoshop.
This error message comes up:

This file uses one or more fonts which are unavailable
on this machine. Rasterize anyway?

When I press 'continue' the file opens with typewriter or another font instead of arial.

************
I have since added arial to the 'System folder'- which I copied from the 'System'.

I followed the MacOS X book to load fonts but it doesn't make a difference.

your fonts aren't good...

are your SURE they are postscript fonts? they might be true type...

you could have corrupted postscript fonts...or if they are something you got off the internet they could have been built poorly...

or...you've got something else out of whack in quark...

but i'm betting it's one of the two former and not the latter...

good luck...jv

Since moving to InDesign, things like that haven't happened to me... Let's see if I can remember Quark:

Hmm. The problem is, Arial is a true type font (at least the default supplied by most systems), and it does not have a PS font alongside the screen font. If I am correct, when saving a page out of Quark as EPS, it cannot encapsulate a font that is not PostScript (hence the name Encapsulated Post Script). You'd better be off switching to a font that has the printer fonts, or to an opentype font.

Oh wait, Quark can't handle OpenType...

Another option, if you have Dsitiller, is to output as PDF, and then open in Photoshop. I believe PDF can handle TrueType fonts.
