Mac OS X login problems

Here's a problem which has stumped me...
My friends G5 doesn't load the Finder. He starts his machine up, his desktop appears (albeit blank) and only the Spotlight icon appears in the menu bar.

Does anyone know what the problem may be and how such a problem might be fixed?

Re-install OS X with Erase and Install (after backing up everything, of course). Happened to me after an Archive and Install went bad.
