I love it! What are the room dimensions? It looks like you have no window, or it's covered by the screen setup? Excellent job, I'd be proud too. :)

Thanks guy's, Its the back 2/3rds of my double garage and measures approx. 5m X 3m and thats why it has no window, great for home theatre.

Mine is still a work-in-progress...

Sanyo PLV-Z2000 1080 projector
100" motorized 16:9 screen built into cabinetry
Sony STR-DE897 7.1 amp (no HDMI inputs, so it's asking to be replaced)
Motorola DCT-3416 DVR
Older DVD/VCR combo
Panasonic BD-35 Blu-Ray Player
Mac-Mini 2.0gHz 2GB/160GB (Will use Plex when I feel like setting it up)
Wii with sensor bar mounted permanently into cabinetry
Slingbox Classic
4-way AV Switcher since I don't have enough inputs (what is it with receivers these days?)
Bose 5.1 speaker system (front speakers built into cabinetry)

Wall panel by seating to plug in iPod, computer, video camera, etc.
Input in bookshelf for iPod.
Soon to have Logitech diNovo Edge wireless kepboard for MacMini
Soon to have Time Capsule for main internet access point/media storage

Lighting is all Insteon controlled by an 8-button wall panel scene selector, and Indigo software on the MacMini (with control from iPhone as well).

All the equipment is in the far right cabinet. Beer fridge is in the far left cabinet. :D

I don't have multiple RAID arrays with shared media around the house and 6.3 TB of music videos and 19 TB of movies and TV shows. I like to keep it simple. :)

Here in Australia, like every sofa/furniture shop have them. The ones I want are where the two middle seats also recline rather than having the footrest/ottoman.
They're generally about $2,500 AUD, which is rather average price for sofas here.

I might have seen the sort of one you're looking for somewhere in this thread, they look fantastic. I don't think you'd ever get them out on display in a store here in the UK though.

Since I last showed a picture or two I have moved into a house I purchased and upgraded some things. Now my house probably looks completely different then most on here. It is a 1934 Depression-era house that has had upgrades like a new electrical system and other items like carpet, new windows, etc., but still retains the original lath and plaster construction walls, wood trim, doors and even lighting fixtures on the living room walls. The wall mounted lighting fixtures look awesome, but are no longer hooked up since they were part of the old knob and tube wiring which was all bypassed or removed. Anyhow here is my fairly modest home theater. I have a 46" Sharp Aquos Quattron LED, Bose Lifestyle V20, LG Wi-Fi BD player, Philips HDD/DVD recorder and a Nintendo Wii. I also have an Airport Express for streaming music to the Lifestyle.

I also included a picture of my seating set-up which is arranged more with a focus around the fireplace then the home theater, but it still provides a good viewing location. The couch is reclining with a fold down cup holder table and massage. The fireplace is just an electric insert, but it is a nice and relaxing touch.

I will say one thing about room acoustics and sound. My Bose system sounded ok in my old place, however in this room with the hard plaster walls, carpeting and acoustical ceiling it sounds amazing.

Here are some quick pics of my setup.

I constructed the room in my basement myself and built the two black cabinets. The room is fairly small @ 16x15 - but I find it really about perfect for my needs. It's connected via two french doors to a large rec room so there's plenty of room nearby. The screen was also diy @ about 94" diagonal. Not huge by front projection standards- but it's considerably larger then the 55" LCD outside the room.

The pics are actually circa 2008. Not much has changes in terms of outward appearance since then. There is a closet just to the left of the screen where all my AV equipment is setup. I've switched out the AVR with a newer one model (a Denon 3808- which itself is no longer very current) and replaced the bluray player with a newer Sony model - I had the very first bluray player on the market (Samsung I believe) at the time of the pic. I still run the original HD-DVD player on the market - the Toshiba HD-A1 (love this beast). The projector has also been updated - but again is old by today's standards @ a Sanyo Z5.

I consider my stuff as very mid-range. Would love to upgrade the speakers (currently Paradigm Monitor v5's and a SVS sub) to B&W's and move to a 1080P projector- but this would all cost a ton and I'm yet willing to part with the cash to do so.

For now, I feel like I'm getting 90-95% of the rooms potential via the equipment I've got. But as anyone who's into this stuff knows, sitting on your hands is a VERY hard thing to do...

^ I quite like the ottoman. I'm repurposing a well-built coffee table into an ottoman and may opt to use the trays like you have there.

On another note, what's with the saran wrap over the fireplace? Was that to keep the cold out?

Wow that mounted shelf (the depth of it) is HUGE... how much weight can it support? Looks like it's on it's way to ripping a hole in the wall!

Yup. If you look straight out you can see the Bank of America football stadium (you can see it in one of the pics). If you look out to the left then you get that view :)

If you don't mind me asking... how much is your rent? I'd LOVE to move out there lol.

Its actually not that big, its a lack shelf from ikea and the front of the shelf reaches the front of the tv. I put my left/center/right speakers on there (bigger speakers than the ones that are in the pic). I recently got a 58" tv and moved the whole setup in the living room, just waiting to get new speakers/sub to complete the makeover.

Yeah, we just moved in a week ago and the landlord said it's there because of drafts. The main floor is noticeably cooler than upstairs even with it on.

Thanks. I LOVE my B&W's. They are a HUGE improvement over my Polk's that I used to have.

Yes, I am a member at AVS, but I do not go there too often. I only have around 400 posts since 2004. :) I spend most of my time at the blu-ray.com forums.

Thanks for the compliment. It's not quite 15Hz. It is rated to have a +/-3dB 18Hz-200hz anechoic extension.

It's terrible quality, and the product isn't finished, but I thought I'd post anyway. I like it a lot. I've got my Sound Bar w/ wireless sub over my 52 LED Sharp Aquos Quattron. Black Wii sitting beside my Apple TV, and the PS3 is next over. Still lots of work to do to make it look less plain.

Haha, such is Ikea furniture. :P Naw, it's actually just the way that you install the doors (any, but it's obviously more pronounced in the glass ones).. it's almost impossible to get 'em straight. And I have a husband that is very easily bored when it comes to household projects, so he gave up rather quickly. :P

How's some outdoor theater??

First backyard outdoor movie showing of 2010 held Friday 8/27/10.
Perfect weather, 25+ family/friends, kids, with popcorn watched the great Pixar movie "Up!" .

Picts tell a neat story:

Watching Pixar "shorts" as got darker prior to the main feature.
At 8:50pm the ISS went overhead, I paused the feature while we all watched it go from SW to NE part of sky, a special treat.
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_FqTNmgNQHz8/THnpMelq8CI/AAAAAAAAKws/JDvT_OyElRU/_MG_2829.jpg

The main feature , "Up!", a great Pixar movie to show.
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_FqTNmgNQHz8/THn0XwKte5I/AAAAAAAAKxQ/6bSTuo4Euo4/_MG_2836.jpg

16' wide x 9' tall screen, I was just happy my Sony VPL-VW60 1080p projector gave a decent and bright picture.
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_FqTNmgNQHz8/THnpM7sKQwI/AAAAAAAAKw0/4HUEk0qwd20/_MG_2834.jpg

Who says kids don't stay still for long, this is a 5 second time exposure (on tripod).
I love how the faces are transfixed onscreen.

This is a 4 second exposure, kids loved being in front laying on the blankets.

This is the shot I was geeked to capture, the Big Dipper watching over our little movie gathering.
Now, this is a 20 second time exposure!!
Captured with my Canon T1i and 15-85 lens 15mm, f4, ISO 800.
link to 1600 pix version, bigger is better for these picts! http://lh5.ggpht.com/_FqTNmgNQHz8/THpaY-mj90I/AAAAAAAAKyU/1qP1L2inIpk/_MG_2857%20ver2.jpg (http://lh5.ggpht.com/_FqTNmgNQHz8/THpaY-mj90I/AAAAAAAAKyU/1qP1L2inIpk/_MG_2857%20ver2.jpg)

After everyone went home, my 3 kids and I went outside and captured Jupiter and her 4 moons.
This is about 11pm, just above the East horizon, Jupiter is RH/South of the Earth's moon.
Captured with my Canon T1i and 55-250 kit lens @250mm, picture cropped.

They went to bed right after taking this.

I can't get over how over the last 10 years, Americans (only because I live in the US and don't really know how the outside of this country operates) have created their own movie theatres at home. It used to be we had one family TV that was no bigger than 21 inch and a few VHS off TV shows we missed while we were at work. Now we have a TV in every room (some even 50 inch or more), way more than a hundred DVDs, music everywhere. I remember when having 30 CDs was a lot. I look at myself and don't know how it happened. I'm one person with 3 HDTVs. I used to go to the movies every week, now I go maybe 6 times a year... if that. I always had a decent record collection when I was a kid so I can understand my CD collection is at 1k but I never was interested in VHS or laser disc. How did I go so insain with DVDs? Yes, in the beginning I got some great deals with online coupons, Publishers Clearing House and now they flooded the market and you can get some good older stuff for under $5. I see some of these set-ups and want to redo my entire house. How did having furniture that lasted over generations turn into changing every 5 years?

Sorry, I just went a little crazy. I just love looking at other peoples homes and their toys. :o

I'm more of the VHS generation and i pretty much recorded any movies i liked. But i know what you mean, during that time things lasted long, things last 5 years. I loved dvd until I began to love Blu-ray.

Also in regard of going to the movies, personally it comes down to prices of the tickets. I usually would go every week, but now just when movie really interest me.

Nice to see another owner of these on MR. I have them in my office.

I can't get over how over the last 10 years, Americans (only because I live in the US and don't really know how the outside of this country operates) have created their own movie theatres at home. The quality of movies at home improved significantly with DVDs and DD5.1. It has all gotten better and better since then. We rarely go see a movie out of the house anymore. We usually have a backlog of movies on the DVR and a Netflix bluray waiting to be seen, as it is.

I have so many questions about projectors and not sure if this is the right place to come but ill give it a shot.

Is it worth it to buy a projector instead of a TV? I was going to buy a new LED one in about a year. But have always wanted a projector.

my main worry is about how long they last until replacing the blub... my TV is on A LOT

also i want to be able to hook up multiple hmdi's (my mbp, my xbox, my cable, and anything else that's needed maybe 1 more) will i get the same resolution through my MBP through another connection to play 1080p movies i downloaded? that's my main source.. my externals and TV.

my price for a TV was no more than $2000 and thats pushing it waaay over the limit. can someone help me?

My humble attempt to build a "home theater" got a lot more interesting since my new TV arrived this week. Just watched Tangled in 3D and I was blown away by the 3D effects (and the plasma picture quality - way better than my 2 year old Sony LCD). I saw a 3D demo in the shops and was a little disappointed - but at home under the right conditions - very nice.

This is my home theater if you can call it that, maybe more of a man cave. It's a work in progress and im still trying to clean it out and rearange some things. I was going to buy 2 end tables and 2 lamps for the back corners, once i find ones i like(appearance and budget wise). I got a cheapo surround system from black friday, and im trying to hook more up to it and trying to conceal the wires somehow.
I dont really use it much right now considering i have no cable or anything up there yet and my parents would make me pay for it ifi got it. I'll be getting a new mac in may for graduation from highschool so the tv will be the main screen for that.

If anyone knows what cables i would have to use to connect the mac to the tv could you send me links or something and also i wanted to do a movie theme so if anyone knows any links for movie posters or wall art dealing with movies.

Thanks!

If you don't mind me asking. How much did you pay for such a setup?

The gear?
From local HT store, we haggled price;
$10k for the main HT gear; Paradigm speakers, Sony PJ, Denon AVR.

Seating for both rows $3.7k
remotes/PS3/misc add $1k.

DIY IB sub + amp about $1.3k,
DIY Acoustic treatments add $500 + $250 for measurement equipment
DIY Screen about $350 for materials

So, $17k give or take....does not include the cost for me to do the whole basement, etc. All DIY.

Very nice theatre, I'm probably located very close to you as I am in SE Michigan as well. By the looks of it, you are probably down the road...

Thanks!

Thanks for the embedding help, I've got it all setup now :)

A couple of them were purchased locally at a store in Toronto, and the other ones were printed at Costco (they were customized a bit with our names in the bottom text).

Thanks! I'm glad you like it :) Lots of hard work, but it was so worth it!

Really like the dual love seat approach you've taken, in all 3 rows yet.

btw, what sort of acoustic treatments did you incorperate in your dedicated HT?

For treatment, currently the room is stuffed with safe & sound insulation everywhere (all walls, ceiling, risers, stage, speaker platform behind the screen). The ceiling is dropped down about an inch from the joists above (the theatre is in the basement), so that helps the sound from travelling up. The room behind the screen where all the speakers are is fully covered with sound treatment and black fabric. When we made the room, we wanted it to both look good and sound good. I'm sure we could add treatments on the side walls for reflections, but its not like we *really* need them. There's also no space on the wall with the door to put them. The ARC system on the Anthem does a really good job of smoothing out the FR across the sweet spot (second row), so that also helps out sound-wise. If we were just going for pure sound, then I would put treatments in more places, but its perfect for us the way it is (just maybe some new subs ;)) haha. AVS helped a ton when making it (I'm 'bleeker' on there).

Great home theater.....one question that's hard to tell from the photos....how much headroom is there for the back row? It almost looks like folks would have to duck when on the top stair to get into those seats - maybe it's just the perspective in the photo...

So you have a LEDE room?
I'm trying to understand what small room acoustic model you followed for your home theater.
Looking at this link, easy to see visually the various small room models, it's 7 pages from the book "Acoustics and Psychoacoustics Applied"
http://eetimes.com/design/audio-design/4015907/Acoustics-and-Psychoacoustics-Applied--Part-1-Listening-room-design?pageNumber=0

That safe & sound insulation in the walls/riser/etc really does not affect your in room acoustics so much, rather the transfer of sound energy in/out of your room thru the walls/ceiling, and keep the stage/riser from resonating.

Knowing that for “best” audio/sound in a listening room, these parameters are tackled in prioritized order:

1. Speaker location, 2. Listener position, 3. Acoustic treatments, 4. Electronic correction.

Frankly, for me the best bang for the buck was the corner superchunk broadband bass traps, those helped flatten out the bass and modal ringing.
Something Audyssey/ARC other EQ just can't do by themself.

The sidewall/ceiling first reflection panels I added totally transformed the perceived soundstage, simply the room is much "bigger" now than before. Clarity, specific localization of sounds all increased.

fwiw, my Denon 4308CI has Audyssey XT, and it does wonders with the room.
I used my room for almost 2 years w/o the in room acoustic treatments, just Audyssey XT.
I got used to that and was satisfied, yet I read up on acoustic treatments and decided to take my HT to the next level.
Then after adding all the acoustic treatments from March 2011-Dec-2011, well worth the time and investment.

Acoustic treatments + Electronic correction is the best.
If your room layout is such that can't do the in room acoustic treatments, and you are satisfied, in the end though that's what matters.

After you walk up the 2 steps, there's around 6ft5" of space. I'm 6ft2" and I find it ok to stand there. I wish our basement ceiling were higher, but there's nothing you can really do about that after you house has been made. It's still perfect for use and nobody's ever hit their head on the ceiling (and they've been people a couple inches taller than me). For the very 3rd row, you don't have to duck at all. The natural way you sit down makes it so that your head never hits the ceiling or back wall. It took *a lot* of measuring and testing to make sure that nobody would hit their head, and its definitely paid off :)

That's true. I'd never know what it sounds like with treatments unless I get some. For handling the subs, I've also got an Anti Mode 8033 that works *amazing*. I can't say enough good things about it. It helps out a ton when trying to smooth out the room. I've been thinking about putting bass traps in the back 2 corners, maybe now I'll actually try it out after reading your post :)

Like you also mentioned with the treatments in your room, I've probably gotten used to my room now. Although it wouldn't hurt to still try out treatments.

Thanks for the helpful link and advice!

I'd kill for that much basement headroom....my house was built in the 50's and cement floor to bottom of first floor joists is about 6 feet 8 inches...no steps in my home theater unless everyone I invite over is a munchkin!

I believe one guy at AVS had same, and he dug his basement deeper in the spot for his HT....extreme construction time.
Easy to make tiered seating, 6'8" is your top tier, dig 12" down for the front row area.....
Not for everyone for sure.

Had a HT meet with a subwoofer "shootout" at my home May-2011, a guy bought his Anti Mode 8033 but we were so busy did not use it.

I highly recommend you put corner floor-ceiling superchunk style broadband bass traps.
As you know, the Anti Mode 8033 does wonders for flat via EQ, but can't tackle modal ringing, only broadband bass traps can.
Ideally your decay time will be below 0.4 sec, 0.3 or lower is tough but possible.

Its about less than half the width of the remote control! So yeah its pretty thin.

I was by no means insulting King Fu Panda. I was insulting it's ability to put a 240Hz HD television through its paces. That'd by like buying a ferrari for going to the grocery store (which I'm sure some idiot has done.)

Been a while since I posted in here...changes changes changes :)

Same Samsung 46" LCD as last time, and same Polk sound bar.

Since my last post, I've upgraded to a TiVo Premier. The set of Audioengine speakers mounted on the wall are dedicated solely to music (the turntable and the Airport Express [not pictured]). In the top-right corner, above the Wii, there's a Roku 2 and a current-generation Apple TV. Also painted the wall a sagey green color ;)

I recently did some modifications to my wiring. Everything now goes through the subwoofer, including the turntable and Airport Express. In that little brown chest to the left, all of my excess cable and an additional surge strip are housed in there. It really helped me clean things up.

Coming soon (hopefully)...upgraded turntable.
